Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan still ruing the fact that she missed out on working with Madhur Bhandarkar for Corporate? Is that the reason why there is a stark similarity in the wardrobe of Ash in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj and that of Bipasha Basu from Corporate?
Bollywood followers may remember that when Corporate was being planned, Madhur Bhandarkar had first approached Aishwarya Rai to play the role of film's central protagonist Nishigandha. Since the film required someone with grace coupled with glamour to be enacting the key role, Aishwarya seemed to be just the right choice. However, due to date problems, Aishwarya couldn't be a part of the film and Bipasha Basu was roped in pronto as a replacement.
Says an industry insider on condition of anonymity, "It appears that Ash always carried a secret desire of doing a role where she could play a corporate woman. This is why when Ram Gopal Varma approached her for Sarkar Raj, she was all for it. However, though this could very much be a coincidence, it is pretty apparent that Aishwarya's wardrobe and look pretty much seems to be based on the one that Bipasha carried in Corporate.
On being told about the similarities, Ram Gopal Varma is hardly amused and instead replies nonchalantly, "In a corporate world, you do dress up in a certain way. You can't walk in like a dolled up heroine or straight from a marriage procession. Anyone familiar with the corporate world knows that it is mandated for senior professionals to be wearing smart business casuals. This is what Aishwarya Rai also wears since she plays a personnel who represents the top management. What else could she have been shown wearing?"
With trademark Ramu humor, the maverick director goes on to conclude, "Whether it is Bipasha Basu, Ash or anyone before or after them, each of them would be seen in a similar attire in a role like this. I don't see any reason why something as trivial as this should be a matter of gossip for anyone? In any case none of us filmmakers have invented the corporate look per se, isn't it?"
Coming back to Sarkar Raj, the film is carrying an all around positive buzz and is all set to release on June 6. With the entire Bachchan family coming together, a hit prequel behind it, vintage Ramu touch to the frames and some well cut promos and stills, Sarkar Raj appears to be a shot in the arm for the filmmaker who has long forgotten his ill fated Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag! It's a universal fact that the name 'Anupam Kher' is synonymous with versatility to the core. Not just that, it's also a common fact that he is not just an actor par excellence but also an excellent human being, who is now all set to take 'humanity' to a different level altogether with the orphanage that he is planning to start under the flagship of 'Anupam Kher Foundation'.
There's a famous English that âVictory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.â But the Master Blaster Anupam Kher is all set to redefine the term 'orphan' and make a winner out of it.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Anupam Kher said, âMany years back, I used to do a show on Doordarshan channel called as 'Ariel Mr. Gold'. As a part of this show, I travelled the lengths and the breadths of the country. And wherever I went, I used to donate Rs. 5000 to the orphanages out there. That's where I saw the pathetic state of the orphanages in this country, which was very much contradictory to the orphanages aboard (in London and America). That's the time when I started to cherish the dream of building an orphanage which will serve as a 'Model Orphanage' to others. The said orphanage will also have a Counselling Centre for the children in slums who have given up studies to earn a living and also for the children who are victims of abuse. With 'Honesty' as the USP of this orphanage, we are looking at helping the destitute and the slum children. We will be starting with 50-60 children, which will eventually increase. We have already requested the government to allot a land in the Bandra-Kurla Complex area and are quite optimistic of the fact that the government will surely extend their support in this noble cause.â
Anupam Kher has also appointed the bright spark Ujjwal Banerjee, (a front runner contestant in the 'Lead India' TV show) as the CEO of the Foundation. Talking about Ujjwal, Anupam said, âI was very disappointed that Ujjwal did not make it as a grand winner. As they say that God shuts one window to open a big other. I spotted the potential of this man on the 'Lead India' show, which I was hosting.â
Here's wishing you oodles of luck and best wishes for your dream venture, Anupamji. Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 May 2008 | 1:58 pm
First things first. It would be wrong to call 'Fragmented Frames - Reflections Of A Critic' as a 'book' per se. Reason? It is mainly an array of 100 odd essays spanning three pages, each that makes this Bhawana Somayaa's effort a 300-page exercise! The book (let it be referred this way from the review perspective) is pretty much unique to read due to this very reason since it doesn't follow a linear format of storytelling but instead packs different genres as one jumps from one essay/chapter to another.
Let's first talk about what Bhawana is looking at telling here through this book. As a senior journalist who has been associated with the world of Bollywood for close to three decades, she primarily 'reflects' on the years gone by and highlights some of the major issues / happenings / gossips etc. over the period.
However, while doing this, she refrains from following the tried and tested (and most of the times pretty boring) format of going year by year/decade by decade and coming up with tales around 'this is what was special between the two actors' or 'this is how a particular film revolutionized Bollywood cinema'. Instead, her take on decades gone by is exciting since she picks up incidents, rather than timelines, as verticals, and talks about them in isolation.
This works in favor of the reader because:
a) This makes for an unpredictable read, page after page since Bhawana juggles from casting couch to heartbreaks to decline of cinema to celebrity personalities to her own reading of incidents as they have happened over the years.
b) Since none of the essays last more than three pages, a reader can choose to have a quick read at his/her own convenience and opt to resume it later without worrying about loosing out on continuity. In fact for someone like me, it only aided a faster read since the mentality of 'let me quickly finish reading another essay' made me navigate the book with far greater interest.
However, even Bhawana would admit that 'Fragmented Frames - Reflections Of A Critic' isn't really something new that she is offering to her readers. While going through the essays you realize that most of these write-ups must already have been published in the past and have mainly collated now to 'create' a book. Though for an average reader it may not really matter since majority wouldn't have actually read those 100 odd chapters before, a seasoned follower of Bollywood would be instantly able to catch 'this is new' v/s 'this is something I have read/am already aware about' factor!
Picture this: In one of the chapters, Bhawana throws the news around Vijay Raaz being caught with drugs at Abu Dhabi airport (during the shoot of Awara Paagal Deewana). Nothing wrong with the story being highlighted but what disappoints is her further claim around 'he has ruined his career'. Come on, the incident has long been dead and buried and Raaz is pretty much happening. And yes, no one has stopped giving him work since he was 'once' caught with drugs!
Same holds good with a short take on Cheeni Kum which comes towards the book's end. Now one fails to understand how would the review of this Amitabh Bachchan-Tabu movie with it's supposed flaws really interest a reader today even after a year?
However, a few 'reflections' as above only aid in keeping the readers 'indifferent', a 'reflection' around a respected journalist/critic from the past makes for an interesting read. It is amazing to know how a man called Dr. Baburao Patel could make or break careers through his columns and reviews way back in the 60's. Also Bhawana makes a valid point through one of her write ups where she makes a comeback call to Shashi Kapoor! Now if only this happens, it would be great to see veterans like Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan coming together in a film!
The writer also makes a positive statement at more than just one occasion where she hails media for the standing it has gathered over the years and only at a few places does she really insist on it to slow down in it's quest for 'breaking news' or paparazzi! She sounds a little disturbed about how stars have started allowing their personal lives to come out in open but in the process also agrees that media plays an important role in a film reaching out to it's audience.
While standard (and expected) essays on casting couch (Madhur Bhandarkar v/s Preeti Jain), other women in the film world (dozen odd leading ladies falling for the married men) and underworld (Abu Salem and Monica Bedi) do make an appearance. A reader is also taken through an emotional journey of how Karan Johar realized while filming Kal Ho Na Ho that his father Yash Johar was suffering from cancer!
What makes for an amusing read though is Bhawana's observation around Himesh Reshammiya reaching a super stardom status in one of her visits to Kashmir. Moreover, she doesn't mince any words while coming down heavily on the 'regressive' sagas being churned out by Ekta Kapoor at an alarming frequency!
However trivial matters like Gurinder Chadha coming late for the press conference of Bride and Prejudice, something which may have affected Bhawana personally, don't quite deserve the print space! One wonders what purpose it solves if an incident like this gets highlighted in a book. Also, there is an entire chapter devoted around how traditionally Bollywood heroes have been carrying various traits of Lord Krishna over the years! Well, it seems more like - 'I have an idea so let that be milked to the maximum'. Read the essay to believe it, as it seems to be a forced write-up in order to prove a theory right!
And yes, Rajinikanth's fans may be alarmed by a piece of advice coming from Bhawana regarding the superstar. As per her, Sivaji-The Boss has been a case of immense media hype and it is time for Rajini to take up different kind of roles rather than playing a 'hero' all the time, just like Amitabh Bachchan has rebuilt his career ever since getting into a different league since Moahabbatein. Reason being that Rajini was fortunate to have scored with Sivaji - The Boss and there is no guarantee that he would be able to deliver a success every time!
Overall, 'Fragmented Frames - Reflections Of A Critic' is a decent affair, though not very good or excellent that one had expected from this book which aimed at 'reflecting' over the decades gone by from a critic's point of view. As a reading material, it is one of the most comfortable books to lay hands on due to reasons as stated above. However, while the idea behind the book is good, it's the inconsistency around some chapters being engaging while others being plain ordinary that results in this Bhawana Somaaya effort turning out to be a mixed bag.

Female power is in. Deepika Padukone is busy matching Akshay Kumar's kicks and somersaults in Bangkok for Nikhil Advani's Chandni Chowk To China. Nearer home in Hyderabad, Jiah Khan matched stunt strides with Aamir Khan.
Though thankfully, she hasn't had any mishaps yet. Jiah's lithe stunts in Murugadoss' Ghajini are every bit as heart-in-the-mouth as Aamir Khan's. The only reason Jiah's action scenes aren't being talked-about are because she isn't talking about it. "I can't! I'm not allowed to," she quakes with contractual terror. "But yes, I've done a lot of action scenes in Ghajini. They've been extremely unnerving."
The action sequences require Jiah to match Aamir kick for kick. "And they are one reason I had to lose so weight," she admits, having returned from Hyderabad where the Ghajini shooting was wrapped up earlier this week. "The schedules don't suffer because of Aamir's accident at all. We resume in the middle of May as per schedule."
On Tuesday Jiah started shooting in Mumbai for Ken Ghosh's film with Shahid Kapoor.
"That's the film I'm not supposed to do," she jokes. "It's so cheap to send compromising messages in someone else's name," Jiah suggests that the sms messages that embarrassed Shahid Kapoor and almost had her out of the project were sent off by someone else in her name.
"I've never sent sms to people in the industry beyond work. I'm so new to all this manipulation scheming and negativity. I'm just so happy to be doing two films like Ghajini and Ken Ghosh's film where I've completely different roles." Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 9 May 2008 | 10:16 am

Aamir, Rajeev Khandelwal's debut film, has already run into problems. According to recent news, Aamir is said to be a copy of the Hollywood film titled Cavite. Bollywood Hungama decided to have a clarified version and spoke to Vikas Bahl, Head of UTV Spotboy.
âBasically, Aamir is written and directed by Rajkumar Gupta and he wrote the story even before the English film, Cavite was released. We had registered it at the Writers' Association. But then after some time we realized that the story of Cavite was very similar to Aamir hence we approached the writers and makers of Cavite and bought the adaptation rights as that's the right thing to do,â says Vikas.
So how much of the story is actually different? âAlthough it's a universal story, we have treated it differently; the screenplay runs pretty much similar to Cavite but our take on the story is different, so is our climax. Anurag Kashyap who is the creative director of Aamir was the first to realize the similarities in the story and notified us. We immediately decided to do the right thing by buying the adaptation rights.â
âThe makers of Cavite were perfectly fine with it, since it is a universal idea. But unfortunately, the media did not cross-check with any of us and published the wrong thing. No one bothers to confirm news,â signs off Vikas Bahl. Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 8 May 2008 | 4:53 pm

There was just one hitch. "Those three days were really taxing on my energy. So at the end of each day the last thing I wanted to hear was my trainer telling me to do my cardio exercises. Mimoh, a proud son of legendary Mithun Chakraborty, is all geared up to prove his acting prowess in his forthcoming debut film, Jimmy. Not many know that his real name is Mahakshay, but Mithun being a die-hard fan of Michael Jackson and Mohammad Ali, also named his son Mimoh, which is a combination of these two names. Apart from Jimmy, Hamilton Palace and Loot are some of his films lined up for the release this year.
Bollywood Hungama brings you an exclusive interview with Mimoh where he shares his experience about working in his debut venture, Jimmy, releasing this Friday (May 9).
Are you nervous or excited for the release of your film?
Honestly, I can't explain how I am feelingâ¦it's beyond any expression. Well, if I have to put into one word, I am scared as to how people would react to my performance in the film. Expectations being a star's son tend to touch the sky and I hope to live up to them.
Tell us what Jimmy is all about?
Jimmy is a thriller, which revolves around the protagonist named Jimmy, played by me. Jimmy is a perfectionist and a workaholic who has no complaints from both his personal and professional life. I work as a driver during the day and DJ in the night. However, with the twists and turns in the story, nothing seems as it is supposed to. What happens next is what Jimmy is all about.
The feeling of independence is very satisfying and to know that your hard work is paid off well gives you the kick to work more hard.
Hmmmâ¦workaholic! You seem to be the same way in real life too; two more films of yours are lined up for the release this year. What's the secret behind this energy?
It's give me immense satisfaction and pleasure to be a part of the film fraternity and I love to work round the clock, I feel I have become addicted to it now. As a beginner, I would like to experiment and give my hundred percent if I have to prove myself. Acting has become a passion now and trust me, I can't think beyond that. I am not doing films out of compulsion, I love my work and enjoy every bit of it so factors like energy, stamina eventually fall in place with the regular workouts I do. Moreover, my work makes me self-sufficientâ¦no more asking pocket money from Dad. The feeling of independence is very satisfying and to know that your hard work is paid off well gives you the kick to work harder.
And all your films have been thrillersâ¦why this inclination towards this particular genre?
There is no special inclination towards any particular genre. I believe newcomers should not be choosy about their work. All my films be it Hamilton Palace, Loot or Jimmy, despite being thrillers will display me in three different characters. Call it a pure coincidence (smiles); I signed them because of their strong script, which coincidently happened to be thrillers.
How has the experience of facing the camera been so far?
Honestly, I have never been so scared in my lifeâ¦you won't believe I was trembling on the very first day of my shoot. Just the thought of facing the camera would make me shiverâ¦it was a dance sequence and I was completely petrified. But to my surprise, I did it in one take and was so thrilled. And things eventually fell in place thereafter.
Do you a get apprehensive about the comparisons between you and your father Mithun Chakraborty, which are bound to happen? What's your take on him?
I like to see the other side of the coin. Comparisons between my father and me, I believe is the USP of the film because audience will be keen to know how different Mithun Chakraborty's son is from him. However, can't neglect the one side as well (laughs) which gives me nightmares as to what would be the audience reaction to my film and my performance as well. And as far as my Dad is concerned, he is a legend himselfâ¦I normally fall short of words when I have to explain him. He has gone through a lot and still is going through. He keeps on pepping me up saying, âSon, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.â My father means everything to me and I hope I live up to his expectations. I have learnt a lot from himâ¦I think he is one of the very few actors who climbed the ladders of success with the originality factor and I try my level best to follow his steps. And today, my father as an actor has reached new heights and I feel proud to say that he has surpassed himself and this is biggest compliment I have ever given him.
Just the thought of facing the camera would make me shiverâ¦
How was the experience working with veteran actor Shakti Kapoor?
To tell you the truth; Shaktiji was more than nice to me. He was so encouraging on the sets. I am an introvert person and don't jell with people easily. Apart from the fear of my performance, the thought of mixing up with my co-stars was something, which was giving me nightmares. However, I was more than happy to have people like Shakti Kapoor in Jimmy and Sunil Shetty in Loot because they treated me not only like co-star but also went out of their way to take care of me and make sure that I am comfortable. Sunil is a gem of a person. Not just on the sets but he would give me fitness tips in the gym.
Apart from the fear of my performance, the thought of mixing up with my co-stars was something, which was giving me nightmares.
How is the music of the film? Which is your favourite track?
Jimmy has a very situational music something, which is not put forcefully to add the style and melody elements to the film. At the same time, I feel it's really good. 'Marhabba' is my favourite track in the film, which took 40 days to be completed and took about 6 hours daily.
What is the USP of the film? Are you satisfied with the way the film has shaped up?
USP is, as I told you earlier the audiences' curiosity to know what Mithun Chakraborty's son can do and how good or bad he is. Secondly, the story, which is the soul of the film. And, I am more than satisfied with Jimmy and hope it works well at the box-office.
Share some memorable moments with us during the shoot of the film?
I can't pin point any oneâ¦the entire shoot was a memorable experience. I remember I had hurt myself during the shoot of the film while doing one stuntâ¦and everyone was so supportive that despite all the pain I managed to give my best. However, the most memorable was the day when I received my first paycheck and I bought things for my family members. That was most touching moment of my life.
