It's general knowledge that the English in India and other foreign countries is 'Same-Same but different'. In the sense, in India, we say 'Cat', whereas they say it's 'Kat'. Here we say, 'cheque', they say 'chek', so on and so forth!
But there's one name to which not only India, but the whole of the Universe abides by and shall abide till eternity and that's 'Shah Rukh Khan'!
The latest 'victim' of the SRK mania was Paris, a city which experienced a never-before mayhem. The reason? Well, SRK was in France for the unveiling of his wax statue at the Grevin Museum. His wife Gauri Khan and Karan Johar accompanied him.
If you thought that SRK will be a stand-alone in the museum, better think again, coz' he has company from the likes of Marylyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and around 300 odd celebrities. SRK now becomes the third Indian at the museum, the first two being Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi.
Is there anything left for you to accomplish, Mr. Khan? True that 'Impossible Is Nothing'. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 29 Apr 2008 | 2:57 pm

Aamir Khan has thought of an innovative teaser theatrical trailer to promote and launch his nephew Imran Khan. It is 2.5-minute trailer that actually takes tongue in check dig at all star launches and all the hoopla over well toned muscular bodies; including him as everyone is aware that he has the best body in town for his look in Ghajini.
It shows Imran Khan as a huge well-toned muscular guy with all trimmings of a theatrical launch, only to reveal the real Imran Khan who is a boy next door as his character in the film. Aamir Khan Production's third production, after Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tuâ¦Ya Jaane Na is the launch vehicle of Imran Khan, Aamir Khan's nephew. Nasirsahib, who is Imran Khan's grandfather, launched Aamir Khan in QSQT.
Aamir Khan has been taking very keen interest in smallest details of the promotion of the film. In fact, he is personally looking into the smallest details of the promotion even though he is completely entrenched in shooting for a crucial portion of Ghajini in Hyderabad.
"Jaane Tu⦠as a film has a very young idiom, the language and the tone of the film is very tongue in cheek. We wanted the teaser to reflect the same irreverence in attitude," says Abbas Tyerwala, the director of the film. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 29 Apr 2008 | 2:43 pm
He belongs to the first family of the Hindi film industry- 'The Kapoor Khandaan' and is the son of one of Hindi cinema's finest actors Shammi Kapoor. With such an illustrious legacy, films had to happen to him one day or the other. He has already directed 3 English cross-over films but the thing that is getting him all excited these days is his acting debut. Yes Aditya Raj Kapoor is all set to make his presence felt in front of the camera with a very realistic and intelligent film called Mumbai 118. Bollywood Hungama spoke to the director turned actor who truly believes that age is all in the matter of one's mind.
Shakespeare once said, âWhat's in a nameâ? Quite a lot I say especially if you have a name like Kapoor in the Hindi film industryâ¦You are the son of one of the finest actors in Hindi cinema - Shammi Kapoor and come from what is often referred to as the 'First Family' of Hindi cinema⦠How does it feel?
(Smiles) Its feels terrific and it feels like destiny taking its own path finally.
Unlike your father you call yourself as Aditya Raj Kapoorâ¦any particular reason?
When I was very young, I was in boarding school and the principal asked me my middle name (family name) I somehow thought Raj is my middle name (since my grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor was alive at that time) Moreover, my father's real name is also Shamsher Raj Kapoor. So I thought let me hang on to that and since then the middle name has been there and I never changed it. So here I am Aditya Raj Kapoor, three different names but one person
You are now all set to make your acting debut with Mumbai 118 at a comparatively older age. What took you so long to decide that this is the right time? Didn't you ever consider about acting as a child?
See this is something probably I would have liked to do a long time ago but I decided to mature and get to know and understand business and see the other side of the world before coming here. I did pretty well with my business, and even set up a video studio. I worked on many projects abroad and in India. But one day I decided to do only films. I finished making 3 English films and then came to Mumbai to make Bollywood films and in the middle, I had a gap of three months and my writer offered me this film He even conned me into acting (laughs). I thought who is to define what is the right age for a man to do something? I felt progressively this should be the next evolutionary step in my life.
Let's talk about your film Mumbai 118, what is this film all about?
The film is basically about an elderly builder (played by me) who falls in love with a very young bar dancer and how he comes in terms with life. It's a very realistic story and a very intelligent film. In fact it's a very unusual story for me to take up as my first film and my entire family was wondering what the hell I'm going to do in it?
They were very shocked but it's a very cute film and its very realistic in the sense I'm not singing and dancing under a tree. I'm playing a real man who leaves his family and goes to a bar girl and how does he conducts his life after that.
Mumbai 118 is about an elderly builder who falls in love with a very young bar dancing girl and how he comes terms with life.
The title Mumbai 118 is quite unusual; does it signify something in particular?
118 is where the bar girl lives, it's the room number or in 'Mumbaiyya' lingo her kholi number.
So who is starring opposite you in the film?
There is a new girl called Kohinoor. She is a very pretty girl, devastatingly good-looking and has also acted very well. She is going to win a National award for this film, I have already blessed her. This is her first film but she is simply superb.
Who is directing the film?
The film is directed by Surendra Verma. He is J.P Dutta's chief assistant. It's a very well directed film. The director has tried not to make it very filmy and it's more like a European or a French film which is aimed at the festivals. It gives you 'Mumbai ka haal', very similar to the films Mahesh Bhatt used to make 20 years back like Arth.
Who else form a part of the cast apart from Kohinoor and yourself?
There is Kiran Jhanjiani who is a popular T.V. actor. He is a thorough professional and has done an excellent job in the film. He plays the antagonist in the film.
What's the status of the film now? How much is left to be shot?
It's finished. I am going to dub now and in two months time it should release. We only shot for 15 days in Mumbai and wrapped the film. It's a bunch of professional people that I worked with. The executive producer is Mr. Rajiv Ruia who earlier made My Friend Ganesha and the producer is Mr. Umesh Gandhi a very prominent builder.
Don't you think a love story between an older man and a young girl has been witnessed quite a lot in the recent past especially in films like Cheeni Kum and Nishabd?
It's not just a plain love story; it's a proper earthy subject which every rich man can identify with. What happens to a person if such a thing happens in real life? How does he deal with it? Cheeni Kum is a different kind of a film. It was a cynical romantic comedy. This is not a comedy; it has high drama and is very high on emotional quotient.
What was your dad (Shammi Kapoorji's) first reaction when you told him about your decision to act?
He said âYou must be crazyâ and asked me if I have lost my mind. But then, he knows that I'm a very practical guy. So I when told him that I'm losing weight and getting into shape for the role he said go ahead and do it.
So is this like your first brush with acting?
Absolutely, I have never acted before or faced the camera. Of course I have done some plays when I was in school (laughs) but that was a long time back. This is my full-fledged acting debut and now I am going to get really serious about my acting career. It's like a tiger has been unleashed in me now.
This is my full-fledged acting debut and now I am going to get really serious about my acting career. It's like a tiger has been unleashed in me now.
Let's talk a little about your early days, not many people know that you started out as an assistant director with the legendary Raj Kapoor Saab. How was your experience?
Yes you are right; in fact let me put it as I did my film schooling with Mr. Raj Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor. I joined Raj Kapoor as an assistant at the end of Bobby and did Dharam Karam with him. In fact J.P Dutta and Kuku Kohli were assisting along with me. We are all colleagues. J.P. is elder than me and he then left for Delhi and went on to do his first film Gulami. Kuku continued for one more film and then I became Raj saab's chief assistant in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. That film helped me to understand what direction is all about. During that film Kumar Gaurav was also assisting us for a brief period. He (Bunty) of course went on to become a film star and I was going to be launched by Raj Saab as a director. On the premiere of Satyam Shivam Sundaram, I just turned around and said I want to do business. I wanted to do something different in my life. So I turned my face to the entire film industry and did business for nearly 25 years non-stop.
I joined Raj Kapoor saab as an assistant at the end of Bobby and did Dharam Karam and Satyam Shivam Sundaram with him.
So what sort of business were you into?
Basically I've been a management guy. I set up a video studio and even built 8-9 amusement parks in the country. I also started one of the first ever video magazines called Shammi Kapoor Presents Manoranjan. That was produced by me and we used dad's brand name. In fact we were the first people with fixed camera set-ups which T.V. channels use today etc. We ran it for 2 years and even had a tie up with Reliance and with Pritish Nandy long time ago. I then produced one of the first tele-films called Gawahi, which was a small budget film and did reasonably well. I have been dabbling every now and then with films and T.V.
You even directed few films; how and when did direction happen?
I migrated to Dubai in 2001. I was setting up my Television studio in Dubai when one of my investors ran away. The Arab guy told me why don't you direct considering you have assisted Raj Kapoor. I never thought about it actually till that moment and you won't believe but I thought I should give it a shot. I started writing and directing and before you knew it, I had finished directing 140 episodes. I then decided that I am not going to do management any more. Then I wrote my first film called Shamaal (which means Sandstorm). It is not yet released but is Dubai's first English film.
Which other films did you direct post Shamaal?
After Shamaal, I directed Sambar Salsa and Don't Stop Dreaming during my days in Birmingham. Both my films starred Rishi Kapoor and are cross-over English films. I then decided to come to Mumbai last year (2007) to do mainstream Bollywood films and here I am.
Did these films Sambar Salsa and Don't Stop Dreaming release in India?
Both the films are in English and they did release in the western world. If the producer wants to dub it in Hindi and release it here, they will do it. Basically it's not in my hands and since I had just started my career then, I didn't insist on anything
So what else do you have lined up apart from Mumbai 118? Any other films which you are directing?
I am making a film called Baltidevi Queen of Southall for which I have signed Rakhi Sawant. I am yet to finalize the male lead though.
I am making a film called Baltidevi Queen of Southall for which I have signed Rakhi Sawant. I am yet to finalize the male lead though.
Baltidevi Queen of Southall is quite an unusual title. What's the film all about?
Balti Devi, is about a 'low on luck' woman living in London, who is a cook in a dhaba and an alcoholic stock broker and how they are held together to understand the true meaning of life. They are two different people with personality disorders and how they cross paths and help each other in spite of an age difference.
Rakhi hasn't really played the main lead yet in any of her films and is known more for her item numbersâ¦.What made you cast her in the lead role?
I cast her because she is damn good. I am sold on her. I believe Rakhi Sawant is the next Mumtaz of the Hindi film industry. In fact when Rakhi asked me how I liked her film Buddha Mar Gaya, I told her, âRakhi don't try to be Hema Malini , don't try to be Madhuri Dixit, don't try to be Madhubala. Only remember one woman in your life- Mumtaz â I say this because Mumtaz was a powerful and vivacious actress who gave the others a run for their money. The same will happen to Rakhi, you mark my words. In fact, I believe even Yash Raj has signed her in their forthcoming film starring Shahid and Rani Mukherjee
I truly believe Rakhi Sawant is the next Mumtaz of the Hindi film industry
So who is playing the male lead?
I haven't yet finalized because its very difficult to get a main lead against Rakhi.
When does Baltidevi Queen of Southall start rolling?
We start rolling sometime in the next couple of months. My pre-production is almost complete. I wrote the script and the whole film is clearly visualized in my mind. I also have an incredibly talented music director called Siddharth Kashyap who is composing the music for the film. So once I find the male lead, we should start shooting.
The Kapoor legacy continues with Ranbir and Kareena Kapoor (the 4th generation of Kapoors) making a mark in the industry. How do you feel about that?
I feel very good. I feel proud to be part of the same legacy started by Prithviraj Kapoor. I would love to work with them someday in the future.
Finally you are making your acting debut at the age of 51. Do you think the audience is ready to accept their hero as someone who is in his fifties?
The content level in India has now matured and you now have character lead artists. Something like what Mr. Sanjeev Kumar did during his time and which Amitji is doing so well now. In fact we owe Amitabhji a lot because he took the lead and has indeed helped people over the age of 50 plus do something different. Moreover today's audience relates to a real, natural character. So you won't see me running around trees and dancing. I am playing a character which is close to my real age. I have white hair in real life and even in my film Mumbai 118 I have kept my hair white. I have not dyed my hair. If Richard Gere, Michael Douglas don't feel the need to dye their hair, why should I?
I have kept my hair white even in the film. I have not dyed my hair. If Richard Gere, Michael Douglas don't feel the need to dye their hair, why should I?
On a parting note, of all your father's films which one do you rate the best and why?
Teesri Manzil because by that time dad had matured into a terrific actor and Vijay Anand's direction was simply superb. And with Helen and Asha Parekh it was a terrific team. Teesri Manzil is what I would call a cult film and is one film which even dad is proud of. In fact, lot of today's dark thrillers still copy bits and pieces from Teesri Manzil.
Lastly what are your future plans, more focus on acting or direction?
Right now I am listening to a couple of scripts for my acting career which is somehow overtaking my directorial career (laughs). I have no set mindset as of now that I will only act or only direct. I have also written my play and will show it in Prithvi theatre by the end of this year. I am taking things as they come and hoping for the best for my debut film Mumbai 118. After raising quite some laughs with their comic timing in One Two Three, Paresh Rawal and Neetu Chandra are coming together again for a laugh riot. The film has an interesting title Khusarprasad Ka Bhoot and it comes from the house of Red Ice Films Production.
Confirms Robby Grewal, one of the producers of Red Ice Films Production, "Yes, Paresh Rawal and Neetu Chandra have been signed for the film and the shooting is currently on in full swing at Bhopal. We like the title Khusarprasad Ka Bhoot but at the moment it is a working title. It may go through a change eventually though we are yet to take a call."
Well, the film's title does sound interesting. So is it yet another comic outing in the offering, as has been the trend for last two years? Says Robby after a pause, "Hmmm, I won't call it as a comedy-comedy per se. It is more in the genre of a black comedy. Actually let me call it as a social satire." A social satire? What exactly does he mean here and which social satire is the running theme of Khusarprasad Ka Bhoot?
Refusing to let known much about the plot, Robby replies with a smile, "I should not be talking much about the film's plot here but I can assure that it is a subject which is pretty much identifiable. We are trying to tell a tale in a light hearted manner and are happy to have actors like Paresh Rawal, Randeep Hooda, Neetu Chandra, Govind Namdeo amongst others on board."
Why have the film makers opted for the city of Bhopal? Says Robby promptly, "We wanted to get the small town milieu since it goes perfectly well for the film's setting. Even though it's sweltering heat here, the crew is enjoying themselves getting the shoot in place since not much has been explored of the city in Hindi cinema. It is a beautiful place to work in."
Neetu Chandra complains in mock frustration though. She says, "Here I am getting all heated up in temperature which never refuses to go below 40 degrees. Ask me how it feels to be running up and down the hills in a summer which is yet to peak. I am surely gonna get all burnt up, courtesy this film." Source: Indiafm.com News | 29 Apr 2008 | 10:48 am

The buzz about the multi-crore deal that Hrithik had struck with Adlabs last year is that it's off! Hrithik wants to return the full amount to Adlabs. But the company is not willing to take a no for an answer.
According to a source, "Hrithik has given the cheque back. But they aren't accepting it. In fact they've asked him to keep the money and they'll make just one film instead of three films for that whole amount with him at a date convenient to him." Hrithik won't comment on the status of his deal with Adlabs.
All he says about star prices is, "The corporate companies are looking at the movie market expanding in the next 3-4 years. I agree many recent films haven't done well. But Om Shanti Om and Jodhaa-Akbar reaffirmed the industry's faith in big films. Jodhaa-Akbar was a period film and above three hours long with no commercial trappings. Theatres across India could've just four shows daily. And it's done 150 crore-rupee business worldwide. For me that's what matters, not the controversies that happened initially. It's my biggest hit ever overseas." Source: Indiafm.com News | 29 Apr 2008 | 10:42 am

After Sony Pictures made their foray into the Hindi film industry with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya last year, we have Warner Bros. Pictures who is all set to enter Bollywood in a big way this year. The conglomerate is already presenting Ramesh Sippy's Akshay Kumar- Deepika Padukone starrer Chandni Chowk to China and now has also announced yet another project.
The film in question is Saas Bahu Aur Sensex- an urban comedy-drama which would be directed by Shona Urvashi and produced by PLA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Saas Bahu Aur Sensex presented by Warner Bros. Pictures stars an eclectic mix of young newcomers like Ankur Khanna, Tanushree Datta & Masumeh Makhija along with seasoned actors like Kirron Kher, Farooq Shaikh and Lillette Dubey amongst others.
The film is about the new growing Indian life, set against the back drop of a positive view of the stock market. Director Shona Urvashi who earlier directed Chupke Se in 2003 is pretty excited about the project. "Saas Bahu Aur Sensex is a fun film on the changing face of India. The story has the Sensex as a backdrop to lives of the most unlikely investors" says Shona Urvashi.
Raman Lamba who is the Executive Producer of the film also has his valid reasons on deciding to make this film, "I chose to make this film to make more people aware of the fact that our economy is growing and it's the right time to make wise investments and make money. Indians are terrific progressive people and this film shows that in a light hearted way" he said.
Principal photography on the film has been completed and work has started on the postproduction. The film's producers PLA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. have been associated with film entertainment for over 50 years and have produced some really successful films such as Khatta Meetha, Chashme Buddoor, Jalwa, Hero Hiralal, and most recently Chupke Se. Saas Bahu Aur Sensex is slated to release on September 12th 2008. Source: Indiafm.com News | 28 Apr 2008 | 4:57 pm
Its Monday time folks, a day when you do some real brain racking exercise with the most popular game 'Guess Who'.
The celebrity this time is a chic who is quite a chic, given her Barbie-doll looks and her recently acquired fringed locks. She is a cousin to none other than Bollywood's very own hunk Arjun Rampal. Now guess who this wonder girl is. The only hint that we can offer you is that when you try to question 'who' in Sanskrit language, this girl will not 'shy' away!

A big excitement awaits Madhavan. "I'm finally going to work with Mr. Bachchan. It has been a long-cherished dream. When he did a guest appearance with me in Ramji Londonwale I couldn't stand straight, I was so nervous and excited. Now we're finally coming together in Leena Yadav's Teen Patti. And all thanks to Arshad Warsi," jokes Maddy about Arshad's unceremonious exit from the project.
Maddy will have to learn to play cards for his gambler's role. "I've never played cards before. So I'll have to start from scratch. At the moment, I've plenty of time to learn stationary skills. I've just had a painful molar extraction done. I can't go out and can't talk much either. In fact I'm surprised the producers of Teen Patti signed me with this swollen face."
Maddy goes into Teen Patti at year-end. Right now, he starts work on the Tamil version of Aziz Mirza's Yes Boss where he steps into Shah Rukh Khan's shoes. "Nishikant Kamat who directed me in the Tamil version of Dombivali Fast and in Mumbai Meri Jaan put me in touch with the working-class side of my personality. Now I need to get back to playing super-heroic parts. Otherwise my audience in Tamil Nadu will think I've mellowed down incurably." Source: Indiafm.com News | 28 Apr 2008 | 4:05 pm

A Big screen clash between Ram Gopal Varma and Priyadarshan has been awaited. Sarkar Raj and Mere Baap Pehle Baap, which were earlier supposed to come together on June 6, have now been spaced by a week. As per the current release plans, while Sarkar Raj is confirmed for the June 6 release, Mere Baap Pehle Aap has been pushed ahead by a week and would now be coming on June 13.
Confirms a source on condition of anonymity, "Yes, it is indeed true that Mere Baap Pehle Aap has opted to come a week later. There was no point to have two big and prestigious films coming together, especially so when the week later was pretty much wide open as well. There are no major films arriving on June 13 which gives Mere Baap Pehle Aap an open week to enjoy."
This would mean that Sarkar Raj would now have a clean run once it hits the big screen on June 6. Ekta Kapoor has already moved C Kkompany to June 20 (which could be pushed further by a fortnight) while it seems highly unlikely that Heroes, Mehbooba and Right Ya Wrong - three other films which currently find a place in the release calendar - would eventually stick to the plan.
"Yes, for Sarkar Raj it is indeed 'mauja hi mauja' as it gets an entire week for itself", laughs our source, "It couldn't have been better for Ram Gopal Varma for whom Sarkar Raj is perhaps the most important project of his career." She goes on to add, "Not just is Sarkar Raj enjoying a solo release for itself, it also is the first major release after the IPL finals. No doubt, hardcore movie buffs would be delighted to have a film like this coming on the screen after a month and a half long cricket mania."
How about Mere Baap Pehle Aap?
Says the source in a convincing tone, "Well, there is no cause of worry for either Sarkar Raj or Mere Baap Pehle Aap, since both of them come with their own loyal set of audience. Of course the spacing of the two films would help because it seemed rather unnecessary to bring them both together."
âHowever, the fact remains that while Ram Gopal Varma has the entire Bachchan family coming together as it's USP with a super successful Sarkar brand behind him, Mere Baap Pehle Aap marks the coming together of Priyadarshan and Akshaye who did wonders in Hungama and Hulchul. With Paresh Rawal as the central protagonist in Mere Baap Pehle Aap, you can expect the fun quotient to only go up exponentially." Source: Indiafm.com News | 28 Apr 2008 | 2:53 pm
Veteran actress Padmini Kolhapure who starred in films like Prem Rog, Woh Saat Din, Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai and Pyar Jhukta Nahin during her prime days is all set to make a comeback of sorts. The actress, who was last seen in a couple of forgettable flicks like Souten and Eight Shani in the year 2006, would now be seen in a film titled Daughter.

Padmini would be seen playing the role of a married working woman who initially doesn't want to have children but later develops motherly feelings when her family decided to adopt a baby girl. Apart from Padmini Kolhapure, the film stars Marathi actor Vikram Gokhale, Reema, Ayub Khan ,Vinod Singh, Arun Nalawade and introduces Rucha who plays the title role.

Tashan
For second consecutive week, 'Tashan' rules from the top. Irony is that though 'Dil Haara', 'Dil Dance Maare' and 'Falak' Tak' are the best of the lot, it is 'Chaliya' which has found most appreciation. Yes, the Kareena Kapoor factor matters!
The film is facing brick bats from all over which is definitely going to work adversely for this innovative album by Vishal-Shekhar

Jannat
'Jannat' has managed to lead the 'race' and upstaged 'Race' for the first time ever since it's arrival. 'Judaai' is catching up fast and by the time film would arrive at theaters in the month of May, one can expect this Pritam soundtrack to hit the #1 spot.
The music company would have to keep the momentum on for the album's promotion, lest it looses it's track before the film's release. As of now, things have started moving in the right direction.

Race
After falling down by a spot last week, courtesy 'Tashan', 'Race' sees another minor step down with 'Jannat' coming in. However, for composer Pritam these are golden times with majority of his albums continuing to rule the charts for months in succession.

Jodhaa Akbar
Rock steady, 'Jodhaa Akbar' is still selling in a consistent manner. The way it is performing, it would well be a catalogue album for the music company with continued sales over next few months at least.

Khuda Kay Liye
Just like the film, the music of 'Khuda Kay Liye' too has found it's bearing and is maintaining itself quite well into the charts. Now one waits to see how well the film continues to perform because along with that the music is only expected to grow further.
While the music is doing quite well by itself, the album deserves to be promoted at least decently, if not strongly. Sadly, there is none of it happening currently.

U Me Aur Hum
'U Me Aur Hum' follows the 'Khuda Kay Liye' route. Just like it's Pakistani counterpart which has remained steady at theaters as well as charts, even 'U Me Aur Hum' has seen a similar fate.
This is the maximum high this Vishal Bhardwaj score has reached and isn't expected to break into Top-5 again

Jab We Met
Surprise of the week! 'Jab We Met' actually moves up by a spot, courtesy newer albums like 'Bhoothnath', 'Anamika', 'Mr. White Mr. Black', 'Jimmy', 'Sirf' and others still trying to find way up in the charts. A lean season for some more weeks to come would mean that Pritam would enjoy the presence of three of his albums in the charts.

Krazzy 4
'Krazzy 4' falls down by a spot and is now sighting an exit soon. Whatever good sales were registered, the music company has to thank Hrithik Roshan for that.
Except for the title song and to an extent 'Dekhta Hai Tu Kya', absolutely nothing else works for the album

Om Shanti Om
Staying on by default, 'Om Shanti Om' doesn't budge from the charts. It has to be seen if entry of 'Woodstock Villa' would result in it's graceful exit.

It was supposed to be an evening of mishaps, chaos, and terrible organization. This was what was expected if previous Bollywood award shows are anything to go by.
Fortunately, for film fans, this award function was different. Yes the venue was hot, the organization chaotic and the show began late and finished later. But the galaxy of stars that descended on London during the Lux Zee Cine Awards 2008 and the deserved award choices themselves more than made up for any shortcomings.
Opening with a great tribute to yesteryears stars courtesy of Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma team, film fans were delighted to see a young boy render a few lines from Junglee while being spurred on by the great Shammi Kapoor. Zeenat Aman, Padmini Kohlapure, Poonam Dhillon, Govinda and Fardeen Khan were also targeted in what was a sweet nod to the songs of Hindi cinema through the ages and those who made them their own. Once Karan Johar and Sajid Khan appeared on stage they made it known they would pull no punches in poking fun at the mad world that is a kaleidoscope of colors. Delivering quips in good faith, they gave the Oscars a run for their money where entertaining and self-deprecating hosts are concerned. Chunky Pandey followed this tradition by pushing the envelope further and drew ecstatic laughs.
Performance wise the only highlights were an acapella piece by British sens-asian Jay Sean and his crew who captivated an audience with no orchestra, just simple beats, and harmonies. The sight of these three young men in comparison to the elaborate dances that had preceded them, were a testimony to the fact that talent can manifest in small numbers as well as droves. Completely in his element, Jay Sean ruled the stage as he has often done on an international stage and delivered notes that had some of the audience's women weak at the knees. The other note-worthy performance was a fun-filled song from Om Shanti Om where Shah Rukh Khan left his audience breathless; reminding them how much fun they keep missing when he's not on tour. Hands clapped, people cheered and dancing in the aisles was no longer relegated to Indian cinemas as a host of Bollywood stars got London out of their seats to groove to the infectious beat in a sequence that celebrated the film fraternity's bond of brotherhood. With appearances on stage from Arjun Rampal, Saif Ali Khan, Neha Dhupia, Dia Mirza, Dino Morea, and others, shuffling in and out of the wings akin to the magical moments created in the film version.
The not-so-noteworthy performances came from Vidya Balan who failed to translate her grace and mastery of the screen onto the stage. Upen Patel, the much-hyped bad boy of Britain proved to only be terrible at oozing charisma, failing to ignite, excite, or entertain. Seeing his performance and the over-the-top attitude he portrays in his sluggish dancing only re-ascertains the fact that the new crowd have a lot to learn from the real pros. Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor delivered decent acts but did a by-the-books routine which only mirrored what they had done elsewhere. Katrina Kaif performed well but her confidence slipped to nervousness at regular points bringing down what could have been strong debut performance on an international stage.
Among the biggest highlights of the evening were the awards, which saw artistes who had been previously overlooked get their just rewards. Aamir Khan, known for not attending award functions has often been neglected from the scene for this very reason, but his film was given two gongs in the Best Director and Most Promising Child Debut categories. Govinda got a Best Supporting Actor award for Partner, an important award to an artiste who was not considered an actor for years, peaked in the 90's then disappeared off the screen only resurfacing in recent times to as much love as he generated 15 years ago. Shilpa Shetty won the Best Supporting Actress award and dedicated her award to London, a city that has given her so much in recent times, and to Metro - the film that gave her a good role, a brilliant script and an opportunity to break the mould and conventions of popular commercial cinema to widespread attention.
The Best Actor in a Negative Role went to Arjun Rampal for Om Shanti Om. It was a moment when a hardworking actor who has given his all to his profession and not coasted through it like some of his contemporaries, was finally given acceptance. Arjun Rampal has always set the screen on fire but his looks have often overshadowed the intensity and depth he can bring to a role. He deserved this long-overdue accolade and I'll go on record to say he deserves a Best Actor award next year for his work in the forthcoming The Last Lear, which has been delayed by almost a year but still looks fresh in a timeless tale of obsession, passion and movies. What is interesting is that this young man has still not peaked in an arena where he continues to grow on screen, watching newcomers around him arrive and leave without finding their footing, proving that the industry would do wise to invest more in those who have a reservoir of untapped talent rather than try to find fresh faces. The Best Actor award went to Shah Rukh Khan for Chak De! India (also the recipient of the Best Film award), Best Actress to Kareena Kapoor for Jab We Met and Best Music to AR Rahman for Guru.
If Indian cinema has truly begun to recognize and reward its finest talents rather than succumb to continuing a trend, which simply saturates the whole notion of awards, this is only the beginning of a new renaissance of Bollywood fever. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 28 Apr 2008 | 1:46 pm
