Mallika's unprofessional behavior upsets Studio 18

Download image as wallpaper Gone are the days when Mallika Sherawat was known only for her hot kissing scenes. Today, the actress has become quite infamous for her alleged nakhras while shooting her films. The latest story doing the rounds is of Mallika's starry tantrums which had Studio 18 in a fix. According to sources, Studio 18 had signed Madame Sherawat to play the female lead in a film tentatively titled Masquerade for a remuneration of Rs.95 lakh. The actress was even paid 25% of her fee as the signing amount for this film which was to be directed by Kundan Shah. Sources say that Mallika's nakhras started even before shooting could begin and that she was not happy with the choice of the director and the cinematographer. The cinematographer of Mallika's choice asked for a fee which was way over the budgeted amount. When director Kundan Shah decided that he had enough, Mallika coolly went to the press and declared the she had walked out of the film. Studio 18 had no option but to shelve the project. However, it has gone ahead and lodged a complaint with IMPPA and has even asked Mallika to return the signing amount paid to her. We tried to get in touch with Mallika for her stance on this issue but the actress did not wish to comment.

"Fashion is 70% complete" - Madhur Bhandarkar

Madhur Bhandarkar has wrapped up a major portion of Fashion in Mumbai and is now traveling to Paris for a recce. Few hours before boarding his flight for Paris, Bhandarkar informs, "I am now off to Paris for a recce to check whether everything is in order and in a sane state, so that it is conducive to the film's shoot. It's a short 3-4 days trip since I basically need to ensure the facilities and logistics and get some basic arrangements in place." Why Paris? "Fashion and Paris go together, anyone and everyone with the faintest clue about the fashion world understands this. For a film like Fashion which is the first ever of its kind in Bollywood, it is imperative that Paris forms a part of the film's narrative. The place is an epitome of fashion; it is obvious they come together in the same breath," says Bhandarkar whose films have otherwise being rooted in India, case in point being Traffic Signal, Corporate, Page 3, Chandni Bar and Satta. Since Priyanka Chopra is currently in Miami shooting for Dostana, how is work on Fashion proceeding? "We have quite a few scenes with Mugdha (Godse) which required to be shot so we have utilized last few days for that", says Bhandarkar whose Fashion is expected to arrive in the last quarter of 2008, "Once Priyanka is back from Miami in the month of May, we would resume shooting for the concluding portions." "In any case, major part of the film has been wrapped up and it is already 70% complete. Fashion has been moving at a good pace and for a film of this scale, I am happy with the way shooting has been progressing so far", signs off Madhur.

Top Ten albums of the week

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 1 Race 'Race' at #1 for yet another week does come as a surprise now. After all it has been for quite a few months that the album has ruling from the top whereas 'Jannat' and 'Tashan' have been giving good competition too. In spite of music promotion coming to a standstill, 'Race' continues to rule! None 2 2 Jannat Closely following 'Race', 'Jannat' is now just a little behind in the 'race'. There are three more songs waiting to be unleashed which means 'Jannat' has quite some ammunition to explore in weeks to come. Promotion of music as well as film is below par. Period. 3 3 Tashan After making a smashing entry into the charts, 'Tashan' sustains itself last week to keep it's #3 position intact. It is quite an achievement for 'Tashan' to be so high up the order in spite of only one song being currently on air - 'Chhaliya'. If not for YRF's promotional strategy of hardly showcasing their songs on music channels, 'Tashan' would have been a serious contender for the #1 spot 4 4 Jodhaa Akbar Music of 'Jodhaa Akbar' has clicked in a big way. Despite initial apprehensions about the fate of this A.R. Rahman score, the songs have done well to enjoy continued sales all over. This pretty much seals the partnership of Ashutosh Gowariker and A.R. Rahman for many more films to come. Audience has given the album a Thumbs Up and this is what matters in the end. The music may not have boasted of a bona fide chartbuster but in entirety, it has made for a quality package album. 5 5 U Me Aur Hum 'U Me Aur Hum' is perhaps the only album in last so many months which has been so consistent in the middle of the charts ever since it's arrival. However, it seems unlikely that it would be able to break into Top-3 with the way 'Race', 'Jannat' and 'Tashan' are performing. Title song 'U Me Aur Hum' could have been used more in the film's narrative as a background piece 6 6 Taare Zameen Par This is the sixth month in the running ever since the soundtrack of 'Taare Zameen Par' hit the stands. Though the music took a very slow start and was hovering in the bottom of the charts till around the film's release, it has been doing stupendously ever since 21st December - the day 'Taare Zameen Par' arrived at theaters. None 7 New Khuda Kay Liye First Pakistani film soundtrack to grace the Indian charts, 'Khuda Kay Liye' has made a decent debut at #7. This is quite some achievement considering the fact that the music has arrived sans any fanfare or promotion. The Sufi sound works pretty well in the album while the title song is a gem. There is no dearth of buyers for the kind of music that 'Khuda Ke Liye' offers. However, the music company needs to pump up the promotion in a big way even after the film is out of the theaters. 8 9 Krazzy 4 Just like the week before, 'Krazzy 4' sees a one spot gain yet again in the week gone by. Next fortnight would tell how much the Rakesh Roshan-Ram Sampat controversy has helped the music to register a higher impact. Except for the title song and to an extent 'Dekhta Hai Tu Kya', absolutely nothing else works for the album 9 7 Jab We Met 'Jab We Met' shows a drop by a couple of spots though there doesn't appear to be much threat for a few more weeks to come at least. Reason? There is no new notable music arriving for weeks at stretch. None 10 8 Om Shanti Om In a fortnight's time, 'Om Shanti Om' has slid from #6 to #8. It would be interesting to see if 'Bhoothnath', an album by Vishal-Shekhar, knocks off 'Om Shanti Om' from the charts. None Source: Music Festival, MGF Mall

Subhash K Jha speaks about U Me Aur Hum

Nothing that Ajay Devgan has done in the past prepares us for the poise, poignancy and sensitivity of his directorial debut. U Me Aur Hum is one of those tender-and-tactile mellow-dramas that leaves you with minty thoughts and dewy eyes. The heart is completely at the right place, as Devgan turning director with an élan that thumbs its nose gently at all those who scoff at his actioner's antecedents, tells the story of a husband whose gentle ministrations take his Alzheimer-stricken wife from her absentminded youth to blanked-out old age. The journey gives us insights into the man-woman relationship and the intricate commitments of a marriage as seen through the eyes that go beyond the romance and excitement of courtship to an area where dark clouds gather over a relationship and threaten its annihilation. The trick, says Devgan's soft but persuasive film, is to hold on. To value the things which make life worth living. There's an interesting reversal of the age-hold cinematic formula where the husband is looked after by the wife through rain and shine. Devgan plays the caring nurturing husband who woes and wins the fey and feisty (if it's Kajol, it cannot be any other way) waitress on a cruise that seems to go on and on and on…. Luckily, the narrative doesn't get 'see' sick. To be sure, the film could have avoided a prolonged courtship that tells us nothing more about life than what we don't already know in the first fifteen minutes. Devgan gets to the point halfway through. The narrative quickly comes to grips with the theme as the solemn doctor (Sachin Khadekar looking suitably solemn) announces the absent-mindedness which has been stalking Pia for a while is actually Alzheimer. The realization of the gravity of the illness, coming to terms with and finally recognizing the reality of an unshakeable love and faith beyond the obvious hardships of a troubled compatibility….these are themes that are given a surprisingly low key treatment by the first-time director. Devgan's directorial specialty is the interweavement of the characters through some wittily and cleverly written dialogues (Ashwani Dheer) which always tell us more than what we hear. The film's substantial emotional impact depends entire on the performances, not just Devgan and Kajol but their two sets of friends, played by Sumeet Raghavan-Divya Dutta as the constantly-quarrelling divorce-bound couple and Karan Khanna-Isha Sharwani as the ever-horny about-to-wed couple. Raghvan is a special revelation. He's quiet and attentive in scenes that require him to be that. The broad strokes in which these characters are portrayed helps to give the narrative a spindly sensuous and moving spin. But of course the chemistry between the lead players guides the destiny of this remarkable film. Kajol's powerhouse performance punctuated and italicized by moments where she hungrily sinks her teeth into emotional depths seldom afforded to commercial actors, comes as no surprise. However, her makeup sometimes gives her caked look. Never mind. This is a film where we can easily look beyond the mask. Ajay Devgan bowls you over. To find him measuring up to his wife's dizzying histrionics is an amazing experience. Watch his expressions as his character goes from concern to bitterness to acceptance and atonement. Jim Broadbent looking after his Alzheimer-stricken wife Judi Dench in Iris couldn't have done better. One sequence in the restaurant where Devgan is required to give a long bitter and ironical monologue on man's innate selfishness after he leaves his wife at a care centre, will stand out among the sincerest expressions of the human ego seen in the cinema. Devgan's command over his craft and the language of heart take you by surprise. Watch that longish but never-dull sequence at the little party where the friends make up their own poetry expressing their personal philosophy to the tune of Sarey raah chalte chalte in Pakeezah. Kaifi Azmi meets his match. Such moments imbue the narrative with an instant cinematic literacy. Some of the sequences showing Kajol's mental blanking-out are so vivid they make your hairs stand on-end. That nerve-wracking moment when the mother nearly ends up drowning her baby in the bath tub or that poignant interlude when the husband leaves his wife at the hospital are so wonderfully devised and executed you wonder which came first: the thought to make a film on Alzheimer's , or the characters who inhabit this dark yet uplifting theme. The film has its flaws. It sometimes tries too hard to be trendily philosophical in its dialogues and ends up sounding phoney. The pseudo-philosophical lyrics for the songs sound like cheap rip-offs of Gulzar. Also, the narrative doesn't seem to follow the linear path. The back-and-forth editing pyrotechnics where key incidents are recreated in flashy flashbacks are distracting. However, Aseem Bajaj's cinematography does much to create a smooth homogenous look and mood for the narrative. The film makes you forget all the flaws. It takes us through a world of love pain and acceptance with such transparent honesty of purpose that at the end of it, you only wonder one thing…why can't more movies be like U Me Aur Hum?
