Though he doesn't like to talk about it, during the making of Shaurya, Rahul Bose lost his father Rupen Bose. "Nobody knows this. But my dad, a full-blown Bhadra Lok played a role in my first starrer English, August. He would visit me on location for every film⦠The only one he couldn't make it for, was Shaurya. During English, August he was there. And he just fitted into the role of Paltoo Kaku like a glove because they needed a Bhadra Lok. For Shaurya he was supposed to join me as usual. I was shooting in Manali and he was in his home in Kasauli. I heard he had collapsed and was rushed to the army hospital where they saved his life for the time being. So you see I owe a lot to the army," says Rahul gratefully.
The army backdrop in Shaurya seems more than just a coincidence. One remembers what a trauma it was for Akshay Kumar to know he was losing his father while shooting Suneel Darshan's Jaanwar. The tears he shed in Jaanwar, Akshay had confessed, were real. Says Rahul, "I remember I had two sequences to shoot with Kay Kay Menon on the day my father collapsed. One was in the morning when we share coffee and the other in the night when we share a drink. My director Samar Khan offered to cancel the shooting. But we all know what budget constraints the smaller filmmakers work under. I continued. And it wasn't such an ordeal. In fact, it was a blessing to slip into another world that didn't remind me of Baba." Rahul finally opens up on the sensitive issue. "I modeled my character in Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Kaal Purush on Baba. The tactile rapport that my character shares with his daughter and son was directly echoed from what Didi and I shared with Baba."
Rahul admits his more subtle performance in Shaurya is taking time to register. Everybody after seeing Shaurya is full of praise for Kay Kayâ¦and rightly so. But it's only now that I've started getting phone calls for the credible sane element that I represent. That's a direct reflection of the way Kay Kay and I have played out our characters. The aggressive character always wins the applause first. If we had both screamed in the courtroom the moral equilibrium of the sequence would've gone for a toss." Rahul feels the performances in this country are judged by their immediate effect. "Unfortunately in this country the more aggressive performance is considered 'better'. The notion of silences on screen escapes our audience. We aren't a subtle people. I faced the same situation with Mr. & Mrs. Iyer It took a whole for people to understand my quiet performance. I've done a rabble-rousing performances in Sanjay Jha's Mumbai Chaka Chak. Just like the guy in Split Wide Open and Pyar Ke Side Effects there's nothing subtle about that guy. But I enjoy subtle performances like English, August, Chameli and the forthcoming The Japanese Wife. The last is by far my quietest and most satisfying performance. Reading the reviews of my unruffled performance in Shaurya, I wonder how critics would react to that one. For now I'm happy because Shaurya would be my most successful film after Jhankar Beats."

Om Shanti Om, a film based on the theme of 'reincarnation' might have earned many laurels at the box-office. However, as the saying goes 'Old is gold', a much celebrated film of 1950's Madhumatistarring the two veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala based on the similar theme will be celebrating its 50th year today. The masterpiece directed by late Bimal Roy will be screened today at Globus Theatre.
Vyjayantimala feeling proud about the happening said that Bimalda brought out the childlike mirth of her character and also, the dancer in her in the limelight. She further added that she has always found black and white dramatic and the theme 'reincarnation' very universal.
Not very convinced with the thought of releasing Madhumati in colour like Mughal-E-Azam and Naya Daur, she said that she would never want Madhumati to go in colour because a classic looks best in black and white.

The 'Madrid International Film Festival' which concluded last week, threw forward a big surprise when our own monstrously talented but neglected Lilette Dubey walked away with the Best Actress Award for her performance in Pritish Nandy's Bow Barracks Forever, last year's neglected gem on the much-neglected anglo-Indian community in Kolkata.
Lilette, who was last seen playing a Mira Nair-modelled filmmaker in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, is delighted by the turn of events. "I was about to go on stage with my friend Mahesh Dattani's play when I got call from the film's director Anjan Dutta. He tried to explain to me over the din that I had been honoured at Madrid. I couldn't follow a word. I was wondering why he Anjan was talking to me about madrasasâ¦." Lilette's performance as the hyper-strung anglo-Indian woman in Bow Barracks Forever has been compared with Jennifer Kapoor's performance in Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane.
"I'm honoured, especially because I was nominated alongside one of my favourite actresses Joan Allen. Also, the award comes from Spain and I'm a fan of Spanish cinema. I've reached an age and stage is in my career where I've lost all vanity about my looks and just need to find the right characters to play."
Back home Lilette is doing an assortment of films. "I play Tabu's mother in Ravi Chopra's Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which was so much fun because I got to share screen space with Govinda. Likewise, I went to the US and did a diaspora film Bollywood Beats with a very good-looking 27 year old director Mehul Shah. I got to co-star with another favourite Sarita Joshi. The veteran Gujarati actress was a barrelful of fun. In fact, I'm getting to work with such lovely actors. The demand for Darsheel Safary to do films grows by the Friday. Fortunately or unfortunately, Darsheel is being very picky. So now, directors who wanted Darsheel have now started looking at other potential actors, some of them from Taare Zameen Par.
Tanay Cheda who played Darsheel's best friend in Taare Zameen Par (the boy Rajan on the crutches) is from Raell Padamsee's theatre group. He plays the younger lead with Ruslaan Mumtaz in the new comedy Mastang Mama directed by ad-maker Vikram Singh.
The team was keen on Darsheel. "But he seems out of bounds. So we thought why not the guy who played Darsheel's class mate and buddy? We feel Tanay is as good as Darsheel," says Ruslaan who intends to bond big-time with his young co-star before shooting begins on April 30. "And I've all the time in the world to bond with Tanay, since a ripped ligament in my leg has me stationary for a month", says Ruslaan. "Ironically, Tanay was on crutches in Taare Zameen Par while I'm on crutches right now. Even more ironically, we're supposed to do a lot of running together in Mastang Mama," laughs Ruslaan.
Darsheel in the meanwhile makes his first television appearance this week on 9 X's Chak De Bachche, his first appearance post -TZP. Producer Abdol Samee Siddiqui signed Samir Karnik to direct his next project. Shooting of his third film under the banner of Sunrise Pictures will commence from May, once the technical details and star cast is in place.

Earlier this week eminent psychologists expressed misgivings on television about the psychological accuracy of the mentally unsound characters in Krazzy 4. But Rakesh Roshan is unperturbed. "We had a psychological expert on the sets constantly. We went to rehabilitation centres. We saw how mental patients lived. None of them lived up to the stereotypes of Hindi cinema where mentally unsound people are shown screaming tearing their hair and sitting awkwardly. In reality, such people are hard to tell apart from normal people. We've shown mentally unsound people in Krazzy 4 as behaving normally."
The producer feels the protests are premature. "Let them first watch the film. We're in fact going to set a new trend in the way psychological disorder is shown in our films. People should see the film before deciding whether we're in the wrong." He adds an afterthought, "Whenever my films are around the corner some stupid controversy or the other comes up. It seems people take advantage of our name. Otherwise how do we explain these controversies coming up just days before release? Why go to court if you've a problem, why not come to me and explain your problemâ¦.unless your intention is to create trouble."
There's a virtual war of words out there, albeit a friendly one between Rakesh Roshan and his namesake Rakeysh Mehra to come up with a viable script for the next film in Hrithik Roshan's Krissh series.
Says Rakesh Roshan, "Rakeysh Mehra wants to make an installment of Krissh for me. I told him he's most welcome to do a Krissh movie for my company and to work on the script. Krissh doesn't belong to me any more. It's become a brand name like Superman. Anyone is welcome to make a film in the series for me."
Rakeysh who has been busy with Dilli 6 has now started working on the script of Krissh.
Explains Roshan, "While Rakeysh is doing his Krissh script, I'm also working on my own script. If his script turns out better, Rakeysh will direct the next Krissh film. If mine turns out better then I will. We may even make both the films one after the other. Or I may direct his scriptâ¦. He may direct mine."
About composer Ram Sampat claiming Rajesh Roshan's music in Krazzy 4 as his own, Rakesh Roshan says, "I can't comment on this since it's a subjudice matter. All I can say for now is, the release of Krazzy 4 cannot be stalled now under any circumstance. All my prints have already gone to various centres . We're treating Krazzy 4 like any of my directorial ventures. Krazzy 4 isn't as big as Krrish. But it's just as important for us. It isn't a slapstick comedy. There're no double-meaning dialogues. In fact, the characters don't think they're being funny."

It's none other than the people involved in the illegal abuse of animals and who slaughter animals for making various leather products. In case you are wondering what Gulshan is doing in this campaign by PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals India) we will get you all the details straight from the bad-man's mouth. âI am a villain only on screen; however, there are real life villains who treat animals badly, whether in Mumbai or New York.â says the acclaimed actor. Further pointing to a photo of cattle cruelly cramped inside a truck and a handler stepping on a collapsed animal in the ad, Gulshan adds, â I urge India's citizens to help stop animals' needless suffering by insisting that their local governments and police enforce laws against cruel transport and poor treatment of animals by truly bad menâ
The ad campaign has been shot by ace photographer Ashok Salian. This is not the first time that Gulshan has teamed up with PETA to speak out against the leather industry. In 2004, he shot a similar ad showing cows jam packed in a lorry on their way to slaughter.

Musical history was made in Miami last week when Abhishek got together with rapper Wyclef Jean for a track called 'Hollywood Meets Bollywood' to pay a tribute to Hindi cinema and his legendary father Amitabh Bachchan.
Abhishek sang naughty patriotic words like "Main yahan ka desi don" and "Khai ke banarsi paan", drawing a direct and delectable reference to the senior Bachchan's in the 1978 hit Don.
On March 29, not only did Wyclef Jean specially ask for Abhishek to do a track, he also flew down from his home in New York to Miami to record with Abhishek and composer Aadesh Shrivastava for a new album that will release in India in May.
Recounting the historical collaboration the still-dazed Aadesh says, "It was unbelievable. Wyclef and I were discussing a track where we needed hiphop-rap in Hindi by an Indian star , when Wyclef suggested, 'How about Abheee-shake?' Naturally I jumped at the suggestion. I've recorded many songs with Amitji. And I've been waiting for the right opportunity to record with Junior who I know has a terrific singing voice."
Plans were immediately concretized. Since Abhishek was working within a very tight schedule for Karan Johar's Dostana in Miami, there was no choice but for Aadesh and Wyclef to take the melody mountain to Mohamed, so to speakâ¦er, sing.
"They became musical soul-mates within minutes. Since I was the one who knew both of them, I thought I'd have to play intermediary. There was instant chemistry between Wyclef and Abhishek in Miami."
Abhishek's lyrics for this sure-fire chartbuster? "Wyclef, Aadesh come on rock this party shake shake /Main yahan ka desi don sang mere ga re//India hamari shaan/Khai ke banarsi paan/Sang mere tu ga re."
The song was recorded the entire day at the Setai recording studio located in one of the poshest hotels of Miami. "Abhishek, Wyclef and I had a ball recording the song till 2.30 in the morning. And then would you believe it, Abhishek headed straight for the shooting of Dostana which started at 4 am," exclaims Aadesh.

With the High Court today declaring that the music of Krazzy 4 is a copy, the whole of Bollywood which, today, was, awaiting the verdict with bated breath, is now in a state of silence, not knowing what to do and how to react.
For those who came in late, 29 year old musician Ram Sampath had filed a case against the Roshan brothers (Rakesh and Rajesh) for having lifted his tune of Sony Ericsson mobile and having it used in the tracks of Krazzy 4 without his consent and also without giving any due credits to him. Ram is seeking Rs 2 crores from the Roshans as compensation.
