Upen and Deepika - Too Close for Comfort

We got these pics of hunky actor Upen Patel getting extra close with yet another PYT. However, a closer look revealed that the babe in the picture is none other than the hot-n-happening Deepika Padukone. So, what is Miss Padukone doing getting all touchy with the Patel chokra. We thought she was dating Ranbir Kapoor right? Well, for all those whose minds have already started wandering, these pics were apparently taken during a photo shoot for designer Wendell Rodriguez few years back. But the question that comes foremost on our minds is why are these pictures in circulation now? Could it be some mischief-monger at work who has released these pics? Your guess is as good as ours. Shemaroo raids Thane for pirated VCDs and DVDs

After having met with DCP Sanjay Sintre, the anti-piracy team of Soyeb and Vinayak Jadhav from Shemaroo Entertainment, along with 8 police officers, raided 8 stalls and arrested 7 people and seized 14,000 VCDs and DVDs worth Rs. 50.5 lakhs (as per market value) at Navpada, Thane,. The raided stuff included new releases like Race, One Two Three, Jodhaa Akbar, Taare Zameen Par and Bal Ganesh amongst many others that were being sold in large quantities. The names of the arrested are Tejbhadur Maniram Chauhan, Sunil Vishnu Surang, Brajesh Kumar Sahani, Akash Ramdas Jadhav, Dinesh Harijan, Anil Rajdev Sharma and Vijay Ramashankar Shani. We just hope that this should put an end to the recurring problem of piracy (at least in Thane) that literally kills 'originality'.

DVD Review: Al Risalah

MOVIE DETAILS Cast: Abdallah Gheith, Michael Ansara, Mouna Wasef, Ali Achmed Taram. Director: Moustapha Akkad Producers (of dubbed version): Yamshi Ahmed, Saad Ahmed Urdu Adaptation: Hasan Kamaal Voiceover: Tarique Shah Music: Maurice Jarre, A.R. Rahman (for the track 'Marhaba Mustapha' which plays in opening and end credit rolls) THE FILM Exponential escalation in DVD sales has brought world cinema to home. One such film coming all the way from the Middle East is Al Risalah, which hardly saw a theatrical release in India a few weeks back but is now available on home video. Originally made in Arabic, the film has been dubbed in Urdu and comes with English subtitles to make the proceedings more decipherable. Al Risalah is primarily a religious film, which talks about the message of Islam. It is mainly for a select segment of audience which aspires to learn and know more about how Islam originated and how the message was spread across globe. Though the proceedings may have turned out to be too theoretical in nature, it is to the credit of director Moustapha Akkad (of Syrian origin) that he adds on numerous dramatic elements to make the film cinematically viable. Al Risalah is set around 600 AD in Mecca with Prophet Mohammed and his followers were working together to make the world believe in one God - Allah! The film projects how vested interest was one of the many reasons which made people follow various Gods. Also slavery was prevalent while women were mistreated. Since Mohammed spoke about equality, love and respect for all, his views were shunned by those on power. As a result, there was wide spread resentment, split amongst followers and battles which lasted for years. Eventually even cynics and opposition fell in line with the message of Islam and there was peace with the religion being embraced in various parts of the world. What is notable about the film is the fact that the main character in the movie, Prophet Mohammed, hasn't been shown on the screen due to religious reasons. Even his voice isn't heard and in a few scenes where his presence is required, it is all indicative. The film is a multi starrer and is set on a grand scale. Shot mainly in Libya, the film has some great wide-angle shots of deserts. Battle sequences form a major part of the second half of the film and they lend a good visual appeal. Thousands of men fill up the frame, which give an authentic feel to the film. Also, since the film tells a tale which is centuries old, much thought has been given on sets, costumes and other artifacts which go with the era. However, at places, one does get a feeling of visuals coming close to what one saw years back in TV serial 'Bible Ki Kahaniyaan'! Now let's talk about the surprise element of the film. Believe it or not but the film was made more than three decades back! Released originally in 1976, the film had it's own share of controversies when it aimed at a global audience. It was made simultaneously in English and released as 'The Message' with a different set of actors. This only makes one more in awe of the film since never once does one realize while watching the dubbed version that Al Risalah was shot decades back. Hats off to the film's technical crew for the finesse they were able to manage even then! PACKAGING The film comes in an ordinary paper packing which is only marginally better than the way pirated DVDs are packaged. DURATION The film comes in a single DVD pack with the film's duration being 160 minutes. SPECIAL FEATURES The DVD doesn't come with any special features. TECHNICAL DETAILS - 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format - Subtitles In English (Subtitled are a must for Al-Risalah since chaste Urdu dialogues make it hard for viewers to grasp the nuances of what happens on screen) - Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo PRICE Rs. 99/- CONCLUSION The film requires immense patience to be watched in entirety. Close to three hours in duration, Al Risalah needs one to concentrate hard. Also, don't search for an out and out entertaining saga in Al Risalah. Though there are dramatic elements to tie the film together, there are long drawn messages and philosophical talk, which have an audience mainly in intelligentsia or those who are genuinely interested in knowing more about Islam. Sherlyn Chopra to star in a Yash Raj film

Download image as wallpaper Singer cum actress Sherlyn Chopra who has earlier been seen in small time flicks like Raqeeb, Naughty Boy and Red Swastik has taken the big leap. The ‘Outrageous’ babe has been signed for a prominent role by hold your breath Yash Raj Films for their forthcoming project starring Shahid Kapur and Rani Mukherjee. Incidentally this is the same film which also marks item queen Rakhi Sawant’s entry into the Yash Raj camp. The film would be directed by debutant director Anurag Singh. Apparently Yash Chopra has been impressed with Sherlyn’s abilities ever since he saw her film Red Swastik. In fact the veteran filmmaker even launched her recent album Outrageous. Sherlyn is naturally excited about making it to the big league but isn’t really in a mood to disclose much about her role in the film. Knowing Yash Raj Films’ penchant for secrecy when it comes to their films we aren’t blaming the poor girl either. All we can say is Way to go babe!!!

Subhash Ghai to team up with Pyarelal

After Om Shanti Om, the mythic musical maestro Pyarelal is all set to re-unite with Showman Subhash Ghai. Subhash Ghai intends to team up with the musical maestro, one-half of the mythic Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo who gave Ghai such stupendous scores in Hero, Karz, Karma and Saudagar. Informs Ghai, "I consider Pyarelal among the ten top music composers of the world. Whatever I know about music is thanks to Pyarelalji. I'm indebted to him. After his partner passed away he seemed to have thrown in the towel. He had lost his energy level. It happens when you lose your close creative or emotional collaborator. "My next film is on child abuse" - Rohit Jugraj

His Superstar may not have done super-business at the box office but he was appreciated by many for his effort. Moreover, he did win the 'race' eventually as he was signed by none other than Abbas-Mustan for one of their upcoming productions. No wonder, Rohit Jugraj, who was written off my many wise men (and women) after Mohit Ahlawat starrer James, is keeping ultra busy. While he is getting his cast in place for this Abbas Mustan production which is about 'female bonding' and has nothing to do with Charlie's Angels (in his own words). He is also gearing up for shooting a quickie. However, this won't be a full length feature film but a docu-drama which would be highlighting a burning issue - Child Abuse! Confirms Rohit, "Sometimes one wants to make a film which is beyond commercial gains. My next film belongs to that category. It is a film which would make people aware about the ugliness in some segments of our society. It deals with the sensitive issue of child abuse." From where did the film's idea come from? Is it a part of some initiative that he is directing this film, just like the way a few directors shot short films on AIDS awareness a few months back? "Yes, this is a global initiative and I am the only filmmaker from India who is working on the project", says the soft spoken filmmaker, "It is not a film which would be restricted to Indian audience; it is designed as a project which would have a global appeal." The film would be going on floors soon and would mainly feature newcomers/never seen before faces. "This film would feature entirely new cast. It is a conscious decision since the film's genre demands no preset image of any star or actor. The film's duration would be close to 30 minutes and I am having a great feeling getting the project in place since I don't have to worry about the commercial aspects here. Not just is the subject quite challenging, it is also very contemporary and I feel strongly about it." Meanwhile what happens to his, errrr, Charlie's Angels inspired action thriller? Laughs Rohit, "I am still trying to figure out from where did these rumors originate. Let me say this yet again that my film with Abbas Mustan has nothing to do with Charlie's Angels. "Gosh, some people even went ahead and finalized the star cast for me. Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Sushmita Sen - Nice list of names but nothing which I can confirm. I guess we would have to wait before I can disclose the final cast. However, be rest assured that it would be an interesting set of names," signs off Rohit.

Roshans get a legal notice for the music Krazzy 4

Download Krazzy 4 wallpapers These days in Bollywood, it has become a trend of sorts of 'suing' of the filmmaker/s just before the movie releases. This time, it's the Roshans who are literally 'facing the music'. The reason being, Ram Sampath, a 32 year old music composer, has dragged director Rakesh Roshan, his musician brother Rajesh Roshan, their film company Filmkraft Productions Pvt Ltd, Super Cassettes Industries, Sony Ericsson and the ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi to the court, alleging that they have directly lifted 'his' music for their album Krazzy 4. Ram, who has composed music for over 3200 commercials, the music soundtracks of films like Khakee and Let's Talk, a remix for pop singer Justin Timberlake, had just received the prestigious advertising award 'Abby'. He claims that the four tracks (the title track, 'Break Free', and their remix versions) have been lifted directly from his 'The Thump Is Here' jingle that he had created for Sony Ericsson mobile in 2007. Ram has now sent a legal notice to the Roshans stating that there were no credits given to him for the music, and that its Rajesh Roshan's name that figures in the credits list. While he has now sought a damage of Rs. 2 crores from the Roshans, the judge said that he will hear both the music (the Sony Mobile commercial and Krazzzy 4) before taking up the hearing again on Wednesday.

And for his role in Ghajini, 'Mr Perfectionist' Aamir has been rigorously training for 4 hours a day from last one and half years, and has also got himself the new designer buzz look. Films with Aamir, SRK?

Another news doing the rounds is that Kajol has given an affirmative nod to Rajkumar Hirani's new film IDIOT. "I loved his [Hirani's] earlier films [MUNNABHAI MBBS, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI] and I would love to work with him, but when I heard the role in IDIOT, I felt I wouldn't suit the character. I look forward to working with him some day if he comes up with the right role that suits me," the supremely talented actress informs me. What about KHAN opposite SRK, directed by her buddy Karan Johar? "He did narrate the idea, but I haven't signed on the dotted line. Till I've heard the entire script, I wouldn't like to comment on it," she says, "Karan is insisting that I do the film, so let's see." While on SRK, there's talk that Ajay is not keen on her working with SRK. "It's false. Ajay has never ever objected to any of my decisions. But getting two finicky people [SRK, Kajol] on board is tough. SRK is so finicky about the script, so until and unless we get the right script, we wouldn't be seen together," she smiles. Kajol's statement should finally put an end to the rumors!

Who'll direct 'Krrish 2'?

So what's the truth on KRRISH 2? Is Rakesh Roshan directing the sequel to the blockbuster hit or has Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra been entrusted the directorial reins of the film? Everyone's busy speculating since neither Roshan Sr. nor Mehra have issued an official statement so far. KRRISH being a Filmkraft [Roshan's banner] property/brand, a clarification from Roshan Sr. would be utmost important at this juncture. "Let me clarify that both Mehra and I are working on our respective scripts. He [Mehra] had expressed eagerness to direct the film and we had mutually decided that whoever comes up with a better script would direct KRRISH 2. So, let's see," Roshan Sr. tells me. Meanwhile, Hrithik is all set to begin filming KITES [produced by Roshans and directed by Anurag Basu]. Not much is known about the film. "It's a love story. The girl is Spanish, the boy is Indian and neither can understand the other's language," he reveals the gist. Ask him if Hrithik is concentrating on home productions currently, the proud father shoots back, "He has always believed in working in one film at a time. Post KITES, if there's an offer that excites him, I am sure he won't refuse it."

The Twilight Players to perform for Dev D

The slick, sharp, and dynamic dance artists known as 'The Twilight Players' are being launched in UTV Spotboy's film Dev D that is being directed by Anurag Kashyap. The trio from UK who consist of Sinbad, Ammo, and Jimi perform in their own formidable style with a heavy dose of showmanship to a hip soundtrack of Latin, Jazz, Indian and Electro Funk. They've been making huge waves on the Burlesque scene introducing a new form of dance known as 'Open Hand'. Having worked on an international spectrum with everyone from Kylie, Talvin Singh to Madonna, the guys are now ready to spread their vibe in Dev D. With their unique look inspired by everything from classic Havana of the 50's, Hollywood glitz of the 60's, right through to the American Funk movement of the 70's, the boys are appearing in various song sequences in Dev D as themselves. Their style is so organic and fluid that they can never do the same take twice - they are constantly improvising take to take and their movements cannot be pinned down to any rules.
