After an 8-month sabbatical, the irrepressible David Dhawan is back in the swing of things. Says the rejuvenated director, "The layoff has done me good. I needed the break from direction, yaar! It's not as if I was sitting idle at home. I was a judge on a dance show. That, I enjoyed thoroughly. I was finalizing the scripts for my next two films and spending time with my family." He intends to direct two films this year.
"The first would be for my friend Vashu Bhagnani with my dear friend Govinda in the lead. It'll be an out-and-out David-Govinda dhamaka, the kind audiences will expect from us. This would be my sixth film with Vashu, can you believe it? We still continue to believe in each other! We're looking for a dhamaal title for this film. But my next Hook Ya Crook written by Rensil D'Silva is a complete departure from everything I've done so far."
David's film for Vashu pairs Govinda with Lara Dutta once again after Ravi Chopra's Pappu Pass Ho Gaya. The film will also star Riteish Deshmukh. While the Vashu project takes him into familiar territory David has decided on a completely new team for Hook Ya Crook. "Rensil wrote the full script for me immediately after Rang De Basanti. He's an amazing writer. His film for me is unbelievable. I've decided on John Abraham for the lead. One more major leading man has to be selected. This is darkish film with violence in it. But nothing that would make audiences alarmed, 'Arrey yeh David Dhawan ko kya ho gaya?'
David's son Rohit is also ready to turn director this year. "In a couple of months, Rohit will ready with his project. I'll most probably be producing the film along with a corporate house." Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 3 Apr 2008 | 12:39 pm

By a quirk of fate, two of the films being released this week are about the isolation of an individual on the basis of his religious and cultural beliefs. The Shaurya leading man Rahul Bose calls it a "happy coincidence".
Says Rahul, "Shaurya is about discrimination. It's absolutely fantastic that Shaurya is coming alongside Khuda Ke Liye. I wish they had come one after another so that the message would've lingered. Maybe audiences will see one and go to the other. But I'm definitely catching Khuda Ke Liye."
On Thursday night, Rahul plays the consummate star at the premiere of Shaurya in Mumbai. "Ha ha. I'd play the consummate star if I was one. Since I'm a working-class actor, I'll just stick to acting. Premieres disturb me deeply. The audience has no respect for the film. It's all about the who's who. For my sanity, I'll step out and chat up with my director Samar Khan. After films are over, the director and actor lose touch. It's a very important film for Samar. As for me, my career is so insignificant in the larger scheme of things. Shaurya won't change me into a superstar."
Shaurya is one of the Rahul's rare films in Hindi. "But there are lots of dialogues in the English language. But I speak more Hindi than the other major characters. This is a fairly good week to release Shaurya. Next week, we'll again be sandwiched between two biggies." Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 3 Apr 2008 | 12:38 pm

The plot as they say thickens. Raj Thackeray, whose certain politically-laden remarks on Amitabh Bachchan sparked off parochial unrest in Mumbai, met up with Ram Gopal Varma on Tuesday and even watched a part of the film.
Says a source close to Ram Gopal Varma, "Raj and Ramu have been friends for some time now. In fact, when Sarkar based on Bal Tackeray's life was made it was Raj who co-ordinated between Ramu and the Shiv Sena supremo. Raj is very keenly interested movies. So when after chatting up, Ramu asked Raj if he wanted to watch some of Sarkar Raaj, Raj readily agreed. He watched about thirty minutes of the film and apparently loved it."
Raj Thackeray was amused to see one of the actors in Sarkar Raaj resembled him.

Murder, Kalyug, Zeher, Awarapan, Gangster, Jannat, Raaz 2 - Each of these films has two common factors to them - Bhatt brothers and Emraan Hashmi. Over the period of time, not just have these films (with an exception of Jannat and Raaz 2 which are yet to be released) turned out to be box office or critical successes, they have also helped both Vishesh Films and Emraan Hashmi show a constant progression.
All this makes one wonder if young Emraan Hashmi has pretty much settled down to the fact that it's this association which would form a major part of his career? Or has he ever thought of exploring new avenues?
"It's all speculation that I am interested in doing films only for Bhatt saab. It isn't only Vishesh Films for me. Yes, I share a great comfort level with them; there are no two thoughts about this. But just like the way they too are making movies with other actors (Dhokha, Showbiz), even I am working with other filmmakers", says Emraan Hashmi.
Well, one does miss the fizz when either of the two do not work with each other. Both Dhokha and Showbiz bombed at the box office while Hashmi too hasn't quite been lucky with his non-Bhatt films like The Train or Good Boy Bad Boy which released last year.
"I don't intend to blame the director of Good Boy Bad Boy, there were so many factors which went against the film. However, it was a case of the final product turning out to be different from what was written on paper. However, I still have no regrets about doing the film as I was mighty excited about the plot. Anyways, I am learning from the mistakes. It always helps when a project of your fails since you start looking at reality. It makes you realize where you have gone wrong and brings you back to reality", introspects Hashmi.
Adds Hashmi, "When you are on a high, you enjoy all the accolades coming your way. You seem to be doing everything right and get into a little relaxed mode. However, with highs like these, it is only good to have lows. Professionally, it was a low in 2007 since I was most hurt about Awarapan not working in the way I was expecting it to. "
"Anyways, thankfully there was some good critical appreciation coming my way, so no damage done. I now have my Jannat to look forward to. Hopefully it will get me critical as well as mass acclaim", winks Emraan. Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 3 Apr 2008 | 9:53 am

For the Biggest B of them all, it seems that the reel life seems to be following the real life (or is it the other way round?)
We are talking about Amitabh Bachchan's relationship with the name 'Aishwarya'. At home, he is a loving Father-in-law to the dutiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. He is also planning to start 'Aishwarya Girls School', amongst many others to follow.
At work, Amitabh is all set to be the judge to the beautifully talented Aishwarya! We are not talking about his bahu, but a contestant Aishwarya Mazmudar, the finalist of the mega reality show 'Amul Star Voice of India - Chhote Ustad', who is pitted against Anwesha Dattagupta, yet another volcano of talent.
The finals of this show will happen on Saturday April 5, 2008. What remains to be seen is that, after months of hard work and eliminations, who will finally be crowned the winner: Aishwarya or Anwesha?
Knowing Amitabh's goldsmith-like impeccable judging skills, one thing is for sure, that the winner will definitely be a 'gem'. Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 2 Apr 2008 | 3:39 pm

It looks like Himesh has decided to forge his individual identity completely separate from all the other singers, actors and singing actors who have come and gaan, A decision has been taken to do away with the entire music score of Subhash Ghai's Karz and substitute it with a swanky new score in Himesh's Karzzzz.
Apparently, the decision to do away with the L-P factor in Himesh's aspirations as an actor comes from the veteran composer Pyarelal's unhappiness over the way his contribution to the music of Om Shanti Om was treated.
Says a hurt and angry Pyarelal, "Though I was initially reluctant, Vishal-Shekhar and Farah Khan were insistent. So I relented. Finally, after all my hard work there was no mention of my contribution in any of the film's promotion and publicity. Not even in any of the credits for the songs in the album's CDs when in fact I had been asked to compose three songs including the theme music for Om Shanti Om."
This experience has definitely soured Pyarelal towards the film industry. "It's an industry I don't understand any more," says Pyarelal sadly.
The decision to keep the chartbusting songs from Subhash Ghai's Karz completely out of Himesh's version of the story decidedly has its echoes in the way one-half of the legendary Laxmikant-Pyarelal has been treated during his comeback. Though Himesh maintains his tightlipped diplomatic stance, the neo-Karzzzz director, Satish Kaushik, is more forthcoming. "We did plan to include some songs from Subhash Ghai's Karz by Laxmikant-Pyarelalji. But then things started changing once we started shooting. The original Karz doesn't have a title song. But Himesh has sung and composed a fabulous title song 'Ishq Mere Tere Karz'. Himesh loves Rafi Saab's 'Dard-e-Dil' and had the situation for our film. But then Himesh created an entirely new track in place of 'Dard-e-Dil'."
Could the fact that the Karz song 'Dard-e-Dil' has already been parodied as 'Dard-e-Disco' in Om Shanti Om have something to do with the decision to do away with the original song situation in the new millennium Karz? Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 2 Apr 2008 | 2:44 pm

THE FILM
Watching a Bengali film dubbed in Hindi isn't something that one does ever week. Also, with a title like Anuranan (which stands for resonance), you realise there and then that this one would be for a niche audience. However, one look at the actors in the film - Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Rituparna Sengupta, Rajat Kapoor - and you are convinced that at the least you can try giving the film a dekko. After all, each of them has seldom appeared in a run of the mill film and hence Anuranan had to be special.
A little bit of research reveals that the film was released originally in 2006 in West Bengal and has been traveling festival circuits over all these months. It is only a couple of months back that the film was dubbed in Hindi and saw a select multiplex release. Though it is a different matter that the experiment turned out to be a disaster with the film failing to run beyond a week.
Completely aware about the fact that Anuranan is going to be an art house cinema, one plays it on. However, it turns out to be an immensely painful watch for an average viewer as leaving aside the first and last 15 minutes of the film, there is absolutely nothing which holds your attention during this approximate 2 hour tale. In fact at multiple times, one looks at the clock in desperation since the proceedings turn out to be extremely lethargic, time consuming and talk heavy.
Opening scenes of Anuranan are good as the happy marriage of Rahul Bose and Rituparna Sengupta is projected on screen. Rajat Kapoor's character is introduced in quick time as well as a relationship of friendship starts building between the trio. Once the setting changed to Mumbai (Rahul is transferred from London where he was originally stationed), boredom sets in. Though there are indications of Rajat falling for Rituparna, there is no movement in that direction. On the other hand, introduction of Raima Sen (as Rajat's wife) looks like adding on the tale but sequences which follow start looking at the philosophy of life.
Coming from a literary background, most of the four characters start conversing about human relationships, beauty of nature, poetics and stuff alike which starts giving the film an out and out art house outlook. Agreed that the director never wanted to show a core 'filmy' tale nor did he want predictability to be set in, but his vision around the film's execution limits it to a select set of audience.
Entertainment - now this is one area where the film completely lacks. In fact, a twist in the pre-climax of the film does succeed in waking up the audience as it completely jolts you. There seems to be a redemption of sorts as one actually looks forward to what would happen next. Still, that doesn't quite justify what one had to go through to reach this point. And just when one thought that it could turn out to be a reasonably better situation, the end credits start rolling which only make Anuranan a film which perhaps never wanted a solution to the complex situation it had got itself into.

CONCLUSION
Anuranan is mainly watchable for it's performances. It is difficult to choose one actor out of Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Rituparna Sengupta or Rajat Kapoor as the one who stands out most. With all of them accomplished in his/her art, they come up with a controlled act in this tale which could have threatened to go downhill if there were lesser actors around. In nutshell, the film is mainly for that segment of audiences which likes to debate around the complexities of human relationships and doesn't necessary watch a film to experience an entertaining tale.

Anuj Saxena's production house, Maverick, which is going to launch Chirag Paswan, son of Ram Vilas Paswan, Union minister of chemicals, fertilizers and steel in a romantic film has signed director Tanveer Khan for an film.

Guru which most consider your finest performance to date came at the start of 2007. Do you think it's forgotten at the awards at the end of the year?
Why do you say that? Rang De Basanti had also been released in January. Awards are no doubt very encouraging. But there have been many notable films in the past that haven't won awards. At the end of the day, the greatest award is a successful film.
One chooses a film because it seems interesting, not to see how many awards it will finally get. Guru was an acclaimed and successful film. It's one of the biggest hits of 2007.
Are you more possessive about Sarkar Raj than Jodhaa Akbar since the former stars you with your wife?
No. At the end of the day I am an actor. And we're both thoroughly professional. It would be incorrect for me to be possessive about our film together. I am both an actor and her husband. I'm possessive about her, not her films. It doesn't matter whom she works with. In fact, I really like her pairing with Duggu. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. I wish that pair all the best.
I really like her pairing with Duggu. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar
Interestingly the first and second turning points in your career were both courtesy Mani Ratnam?
Yes, Yuva and Guru. Mani is very special. He had faith in me at a time when most people had lost faith, including myself. He's a friend and mentor. I hope I never let him down. I'd love to work again and again with him. He knows I'm only a phone call away. According to me, he's one of the most talented directors we've ever had. Mani is very reserved. If he has another film for me he would tell me when he's ready.
Mani Ratnam had faith in me at a time when most people had lost faith, including myself
You went through a prolonged lean phase at the beginning of your career?
During the times when my films were flopping I had friends like Karan Johar who kept my morale high. I can't deny access to the industry was easier because you are a Bachchan. And I guess I did have it much easier than many people. But once you get a chance you've to prove yourself just like anybody else. I had to struggle. I almost gave up after seventeen failures. My father kept saying, just keep working and believe in yourself. Thankfully, better days were around the corner. You've to work very hard to get anywhere in this business. And I'm working hard. However, there's no formula for success. When I decided to do Guru, a lot of my friends thought it wouldn't work at all. By the grace of God it did well.
Are you pleased with your assignments?
Of course! How wonderful to be working at a time when an actor gets to do a Sarkar Raj, Drona and Dilli 6 during the same year. It's a dream come true for any actor.
Why did you initially opt out of Dilli 6?
Rakeysh Mehra mentioned the subject to me many years ago. He finally decided to shoot it in winter 2006 when I was committed to shooting Drona. I suggested he do it with someone else. He asked Duggu who asked me if it was okay. I was perfectly okay with that. But then Duggu's dates didn't work out. Then Rakeysh decided to re-write the script. By then it was December 2007 and I was thankfully able to do the film. The rest, I hope will be history. Rakeysh is a very sensitive director and I love working with him. I was meant to start my career with him.
Rakeysh is a very sensitive director and I love working with him
How has the experience in Jaipur been so far?
It's like attending acting school every morning. When would I again get an opportunity to observe and work with actors like Waheeda Rehmanji, Chintu Uncle(Rishi Kapoor), Om Puriji, Deepak Dobriyal, Pawan Malhotra,, Vijay Raaz, Atul Kulkarni, K.K Rainaâ¦.It's school! It's cool!!
Both you and dad are huge fans of Waheedaji?
Who isn't? This is my second film with her after Om Jai Jagdish. I just keep staring at her. Actors would do anything to be in one frame with her.
And what about your co-star Sonam Kapoor?
I saw Saawariya and thought she was wonderful. When I started my career I wasn't half as good as Sonam or Ranbir. It's wonderful to see this whole eager enthusiastic new generation coming in. Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 2 Apr 2008 | 11:22 am
Looks like controversies never seem to end for Aamir Khan. By now its common news that the actor-director par excellence was among the privileged few chosen to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay and carry the Olympic torch in the capital on April 17th. However, no sooner had he expressed his happiness at being part of the prestigious event, he had to face the wrath of the Tibetan community.
For those who came in late, members of the Tibetan community asked Aamir not to participate in the relay as a protest for the injustice meted to the Tibetan community in their fight for freedom against China. Aamir found himself in the middle of yet another controversy with even some of his friends and family members requesting him to back off from participating in the event.
However, Aamir has always believed in doing what he feels is right and this time too he has done the same thing. The versatile actor has gone ahead and posted a blog on his site www.aamirkhan.com in which he has given his reasons for supporting the Olympic torch relay. "The Olympic Games represent for me the coming together of different people across the world despite their differences and difficulties. It is an opportunity for sportsmen and women across the world to showcase their talent, to challenge themselves and others, and for others to watch and marvel at the achievements of the human body, mind and soul. However, I feel that the Olympic Games do not belong to China", says the actor.
Aamir further even made it clear that he does care for the people of Tibet, "I categorically state that I am absolutely against any form of violence, and certainly I am deeply upset whenever the basic rights of human beings are violated anywhere in the world. I would like to state that I have the highest regard and respect for the struggle that the people of Tibet are going through. I completely empathize with them. My heart goes out to them."
Aamir also clarified that his participating in the Olympic torch relay did not mean that he supports China, "I request those of you who have asked me to stay away from the Olympic Torch Relay to understand that when I do run with the torch on the 17th of April, it is not in support of China. In fact it will be with a prayer in my heart for the people of Tibet, and indeed for all people across the world who are victims of human rights violations." signs off Aamir in his blog.
