DVD Review: Anuranan

MOVIE DETAILS Cast: Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Rituparna Sengupta, Rajat Kapoor Director: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury Producer: Indrani Mukherjee, Jeet Bannerjee, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury Music: Tanmay Bose, Aashish Rego THE FILM Watching a Bengali film dubbed in Hindi isn't something that one does ever week. Also, with a title like Anuranan (which stands for resonance), you realise there and then that this one would be for a niche audience. However, one look at the actors in the film - Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Rituparna Sengupta, Rajat Kapoor - and you are convinced that at the least you can try giving the film a dekko. After all, each of them has seldom appeared in a run of the mill film and hence Anuranan had to be special. A little bit of research reveals that the film was released originally in 2006 in West Bengal and has been traveling festival circuits over all these months. It is only a couple of months back that the film was dubbed in Hindi and saw a select multiplex release. Though it is a different matter that the experiment turned out to be a disaster with the film failing to run beyond a week. Completely aware about the fact that Anuranan is going to be an art house cinema, one plays it on. However, it turns out to be an immensely painful watch for an average viewer as leaving aside the first and last 15 minutes of the film, there is absolutely nothing which holds your attention during this approximate 2 hour tale. In fact at multiple times, one looks at the clock in desperation since the proceedings turn out to be extremely lethargic, time consuming and talk heavy. Opening scenes of Anuranan are good as the happy marriage of Rahul Bose and Rituparna Sengupta is projected on screen. Rajat Kapoor's character is introduced in quick time as well as a relationship of friendship starts building between the trio. Once the setting changed to Mumbai (Rahul is transferred from London where he was originally stationed), boredom sets in. Though there are indications of Rajat falling for Rituparna, there is no movement in that direction. On the other hand, introduction of Raima Sen (as Rajat's wife) looks like adding on the tale but sequences which follow start looking at the philosophy of life. Coming from a literary background, most of the four characters start conversing about human relationships, beauty of nature, poetics and stuff alike which starts giving the film an out and out art house outlook. Agreed that the director never wanted to show a core 'filmy' tale nor did he want predictability to be set in, but his vision around the film's execution limits it to a select set of audience. Entertainment - now this is one area where the film completely lacks. In fact, a twist in the pre-climax of the film does succeed in waking up the audience as it completely jolts you. There seems to be a redemption of sorts as one actually looks forward to what would happen next. Still, that doesn't quite justify what one had to go through to reach this point. And just when one thought that it could turn out to be a reasonably better situation, the end credits start rolling which only make Anuranan a film which perhaps never wanted a solution to the complex situation it had got itself into. PACKAGING The film comes in basic plastic case while being engulfed in a paper cover. DURATION The film comes in a single DVD pack with the film's duration being 114 minutes. SPECIAL FEATURES The DVD doesn't come with any special features. TECHNICAL DETAILS - 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format - Language options: Hindi and Bengali - Subtitles in English - Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo PRICE Rs. 349/- CONCLUSION Anuranan is mainly watchable for it's performances. It is difficult to choose one actor out of Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Rituparna Sengupta or Rajat Kapoor as the one who stands out most. With all of them accomplished in his/her art, they come up with a controlled act in this tale which could have threatened to go downhill if there were lesser actors around. In nutshell, the film is mainly for that segment of audiences which likes to debate around the complexities of human relationships and doesn't necessary watch a film to experience an entertaining tale. Rating: **

"I really like Ash's pairing with Hrithik" - Abhishek Bachchan

Guru which most consider your finest performance to date came at the start of 2007. Do you think it's forgotten at the awards at the end of the year? Why do you say that? Rang De Basanti had also been released in January. Awards are no doubt very encouraging. But there have been many notable films in the past that haven't won awards. At the end of the day, the greatest award is a successful film. One chooses a film because it seems interesting, not to see how many awards it will finally get. Guru was an acclaimed and successful film. It's one of the biggest hits of 2007. Are you more possessive about Sarkar Raj than Jodhaa Akbar since the former stars you with your wife? No. At the end of the day I am an actor. And we're both thoroughly professional. It would be incorrect for me to be possessive about our film together. I am both an actor and her husband. I'm possessive about her, not her films. It doesn't matter whom she works with. In fact, I really like her pairing with Duggu. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. I wish that pair all the best. I really like her pairing with Duggu. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar Interestingly the first and second turning points in your career were both courtesy Mani Ratnam? Yes, Yuva and Guru. Mani is very special. He had faith in me at a time when most people had lost faith, including myself. He's a friend and mentor. I hope I never let him down. I'd love to work again and again with him. He knows I'm only a phone call away. According to me, he's one of the most talented directors we've ever had. Mani is very reserved. If he has another film for me he would tell me when he's ready. Mani Ratnam had faith in me at a time when most people had lost faith, including myself You went through a prolonged lean phase at the beginning of your career? During the times when my films were flopping I had friends like Karan Johar who kept my morale high. I can't deny access to the industry was easier because you are a Bachchan. And I guess I did have it much easier than many people. But once you get a chance you've to prove yourself just like anybody else. I had to struggle. I almost gave up after seventeen failures. My father kept saying, just keep working and believe in yourself. Thankfully, better days were around the corner. You've to work very hard to get anywhere in this business. And I'm working hard. However, there's no formula for success. When I decided to do Guru, a lot of my friends thought it wouldn't work at all. By the grace of God it did well. Are you pleased with your assignments? Of course! How wonderful to be working at a time when an actor gets to do a Sarkar Raj, Drona and Dilli 6 during the same year. It's a dream come true for any actor. Why did you initially opt out of Dilli 6? Rakeysh Mehra mentioned the subject to me many years ago. He finally decided to shoot it in winter 2006 when I was committed to shooting Drona. I suggested he do it with someone else. He asked Duggu who asked me if it was okay. I was perfectly okay with that. But then Duggu's dates didn't work out. Then Rakeysh decided to re-write the script. By then it was December 2007 and I was thankfully able to do the film. The rest, I hope will be history. Rakeysh is a very sensitive director and I love working with him. I was meant to start my career with him. Rakeysh is a very sensitive director and I love working with him How has the experience in Jaipur been so far? It's like attending acting school every morning. When would I again get an opportunity to observe and work with actors like Waheeda Rehmanji, Chintu Uncle(Rishi Kapoor), Om Puriji, Deepak Dobriyal, Pawan Malhotra,, Vijay Raaz, Atul Kulkarni, K.K Raina….It's school! It's cool!! Both you and dad are huge fans of Waheedaji? Who isn't? This is my second film with her after Om Jai Jagdish. I just keep staring at her. Actors would do anything to be in one frame with her. And what about your co-star Sonam Kapoor? I saw Saawariya and thought she was wonderful. When I started my career I wasn't half as good as Sonam or Ranbir. It's wonderful to see this whole eager enthusiastic new generation coming in.

"Olympic Games do not belong to China" - Aamir Khan

Looks like controversies never seem to end for Aamir Khan. By now its common news that the actor-director par excellence was among the privileged few chosen to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay and carry the Olympic torch in the capital on April 17th. However, no sooner had he expressed his happiness at being part of the prestigious event, he had to face the wrath of the Tibetan community. For those who came in late, members of the Tibetan community asked Aamir not to participate in the relay as a protest for the injustice meted to the Tibetan community in their fight for freedom against China. Aamir found himself in the middle of yet another controversy with even some of his friends and family members requesting him to back off from participating in the event. However, Aamir has always believed in doing what he feels is right and this time too he has done the same thing. The versatile actor has gone ahead and posted a blog on his site www.aamirkhan.com in which he has given his reasons for supporting the Olympic torch relay. "The Olympic Games represent for me the coming together of different people across the world despite their differences and difficulties. It is an opportunity for sportsmen and women across the world to showcase their talent, to challenge themselves and others, and for others to watch and marvel at the achievements of the human body, mind and soul. However, I feel that the Olympic Games do not belong to China", says the actor. Aamir further even made it clear that he does care for the people of Tibet, "I categorically state that I am absolutely against any form of violence, and certainly I am deeply upset whenever the basic rights of human beings are violated anywhere in the world. I would like to state that I have the highest regard and respect for the struggle that the people of Tibet are going through. I completely empathize with them. My heart goes out to them." Aamir also clarified that his participating in the Olympic torch relay did not mean that he supports China, "I request those of you who have asked me to stay away from the Olympic Torch Relay to understand that when I do run with the torch on the 17th of April, it is not in support of China. In fact it will be with a prayer in my heart for the people of Tibet, and indeed for all people across the world who are victims of human rights violations." signs off Aamir in his blog.

Ajay Devgan B-Day

It's said that 'A Rose by ay other name remains a Rose'. Likewise, today's B-Day boy Ajay Devgan, by any other name (Superstar/ Screen Scorcher/ Mind-blowing performer etc…) still remains 'The' Ajay Devgan, who kept his first step in Bollywood with the smash-hit Phool Aur Kaante. What followed after that were series of films which only confirmed the fact that Bollywood had got its new superstar in Ajay Devgan, a man who could carry any film solely on his shoulders! In the years to come, Ajay, who was earlier 'slotted' as an action hero proved his versatility as an actor by doing intense roles which got him connected instantly to the millions of cinegoers all over the globe. He thus, proved that a man who can do 'splits' between two mobikes in motion can also emote volumes with his eyes without the lips doing the talking. On the eve of his B-Day, Bollywood Hungama would want your fingers to do the talking by posting your messages below.

Hrithik's track in Krazzy 4 to be featured in the end credits

Click above for more stills Rakesh Roshan launched the music of KRAZZY 4 with the promotional song of Shah Rukh Khan. The song, filmed most lavishly, caught the attention of one and all. The next track, filmed on Rakhi Sawant, also became hugely popular with those who love desi numbers. The question was, would Hrithik Roshan's song be as impressive as SRK's? Now that the song is on air [it'll feature in the end credits of the film], everyone's unanimous that Hrithik has outdone himself. Ask Roshan Sr. whether the song would now be a part of the story thanks to its popularity, he denies it outright. “If we force the song in the narrative, it would only act as a speed-breaker, spoiling the flow of the story. The song was never meant to be a part of the story; it was always supposed to be used during the end credits,” he states. That's honesty!

Himesh's mom objects to his Bermuda romance

Click above for more stills It appears that Himesh may finally have to bow done to his mother's wishes and refrain from romancing with his new lady love. Apparently, his mother Mrs. Madhur Reshammiya got a hint about her actor/composer/singer son planning to sneak out to none less than Bermuda and hence isn't too pleased about his escapades. Well, hold on before the shock gets on the top of you as all this is happening not for the real life but reel life journey of Himesh Reshammiya. It so happened that a song was being planned to be shot in Bermuda Triangle for Himesh's upcoming film Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke. However, there is uncertainty around whether this would indeed turn out to be the case. Here is the reason why? "Aditya Narain Singh, who is producing Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke featuring Himesh Reshammiya and newcomers Niharika Singh and Jenifer Kotwal, is having ambitious plans for his film", informs a source from the film's crew. And what exactly is this ambitious plan? "Though he had finalized some breath taking locales in places as diverse as Paris, Punjab and Delhi, he wanted to do something more for the film. He wasn't content with just these cities and wanted his film to go where no other film would probably have gone before. This is when he thought of shooting a song in the Bermuda Triangle." So where did the issue lie? After all, it does sound exciting to have Bermuda Triangle becoming a part of a commercial Bollywood flick! She reveals, "Not many are aware but Bermuda Triangle is known to be an area where not everyone is willing go. There are horror stories about people vanishing in a mysterious manner. Obviously, the moment Himesh's mother got to hear about this, she prohibited Himesh from giving his consent for his visit to the place. More than being superstitious, it is about being extra cautious." What does Himesh have to say on this? Though Himesh was unavailable for comments, the source did spill the beans. She said, "Himesh is yet to give his nod to shoot there since his mother has strictly warned him not to shoot there; she has made her displeasure quite clear." How about Aditya Narain Singh? He certainly must not be thrilled considering he has big plans for Seema-Sudhir directed Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke. "Aditya has been convincing everyone that it's just a myth and to shoot there will not be risky at all. However, it seems that he may have to bow down and shooting would eventually have to happen in Paris. Knowing that Himesh never goes against the wishes of his mother, Aditya doesn't quite have a choice but to abort his plans." All eyes are now set on Himesh to come out of this tricky situation and take a final call. On one end is an enterprising producer who is willing to go all out to make M2KNDM2K a special film and not leave any stone unturned. In fact, he has even signed Himesh for a whopping price. On the other hand, there is the eternal mother factor which has traditionally been responsible for many a decision! Now this is one 'triangle' which Himesh wouldn't really have seen coming! The myth of Bermuda Triangle For starters, Bermuda Triangle runs between the Bermuda Islands, Puerto Rico and Miami in Florida. The region attracted international attention after numerous planes and ships were said to have mysteriously disappeared there. Reports of unnatural occurrences were popularized. The myth claims that it's not just planes that vanish there. Many ships apparently came to foul ends in the Bermuda Triangle, including the 19th century sailing ship, the Marie Celeste, which was supposedly found drifting and abandoned, in perfect sailing condition. And the Bermuda Triangle has moved with the times, and since then, many more ships, including the nuclear submarine USS Scorpion, have vanished there without a trace. Exotic explanations for these disasters include power crystals from Atlantis, hostile aliens hiding under the waters, violent vortices from other dimensions, and evil humans using anti-gravity machines. But it turns out that there is something mysterious, and potentially dangerous, and potentially very useful, under the ocean floor of the Bermuda Triangle.
