His choice of movies makes you sit up and take notice of the diminutive actor. Be it the multiplex flick Bombay Boys or the critically acclaimed Mr. and Mrs. Iyer or the musical Jhankaar Beats and the hardcore commercial film, Pyaar Ke Side Effects have only proved his versatility as an actor. He is known to be a maverick who believes in doing things his own way. What else explains the fact that this actor decided to turn director with just his fifth film, Everybody Says I am Fine. Off-screen too, he is always in news for his involvement in various charitable activities. We are talking about one of the most intelligent actors we have in Bollywood - the one and only Rahul Bose.

Jayabrato Chatterjee has done it all from filmmaking to writing novels. Also, well-known columnist in The Statesman, The Telegraph and Times of India, he started his career as a filmmaker with Kehkashaa starring Victor Banerjee, Mallika Sarabhai and Girish Karnad in 1985. He is also the founder of the Inner Eye Communications Pvt. Ltd. in 2003.
His second film being after a span of 25 years since Kehkashaa, titled Lovesongs: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow starring Om Puri, Jaya Bachchan, Mallika Sarabhai, Rajit Kapoor, Prithviraj Chaudhary and Deol Basu released last Friday, March 26. Bollywood Hungama brings you an interview with the director himself where he talks about his comeback in Bollywood.
Lovesongs: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow sounds like an out and out romantic film. Throw some more light on the storyline?
Lovesongs: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow revolves around three generations and the intricate relationships they share. Jaya Bachchan plays the role of grandmother whose rigid nature compels her daughter to run away. It's the story about the inquisitiveness of a grandson to know about his mother through his grandmother who has mellowed down with time.
It's the story about the inquisitiveness of a grandson to know about his mother.
What does the title Love songs: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow suggest of the film?
The film deals with the three generations wherein 'Yesterday' symbolizes the love of Jayaji for Omji, 'Today' stands for the daughter who used to sing love songs in a famous night club on Park Street in Calcutta and lastly 'Tomorrow' for grandson's newly blossomed love with a young girl.
What are the respective characters of Om Puri and Jaya Bachchan in the film?
Omji plays Jayaji's love interest in the film. Unfortunately, due to religious constraints they are not allowed to marry. Omji is then forcefully dispatched to England where he marries Mallika Sarabhai who is an alcoholic. Years later, Omji comes down to meet Jayji; what then unfolds is what the Lovesongs: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow all about.
Perfection is a gradual step but I have a tendency to always find loopholes in my work.
Are you satisfied with the way the film has shaped up?
See, I personally feel there is always scope for improvement in everything we do. Perfection is a gradual step but I have a tendency to always find loopholes in my work. However, Claran Stober who writes for New York Times saw the film and was all praises for it.
Who is your target audience?
My target audience is English speaking upper middle class in urban areas where multiplexes are available for them to go and witness a league-apart English film. My film caters to a niche audience.
How was it to direct the two veteran actors Om Puri and Jaya Bachchan?
Oh! It was an absolute delight to work with the master artists themselves. The epitomes of humility and thorough perfectionist, made me so comfortable during the shoot that never once did I feel that I am working with legendry Bollywood stars. I feel very privileged to work with people of such caliber who have no ego hassles. The way they would listen to me while narrating the scene would take me by surprise at times. Overall, it was a wonderful learning experience for me.
Why did you zero down on Prithviraj Chaudhary and Deol Basu for the roles of grandchildren? Could you throw some light on their respective characters?
Grandson played by Prithviraj Chaudhary is a very talented young man who had been a stage artist and Deol Basu also has a background of theatre from Calcutta. I chose Prithviraj and Deol both of them are smart and very talented. Their characters are based on the new generation of the society, who are aware about their surroundings, mature and more forward in times. They thought beyond the conservative beliefs and mindsets of most families in a society. And I must say, they have done a marvelous job, they never had inhibitions and preconditioned notion about their roles. All I had to do was just explain the outline of the scene and they would enact it with utmost perfection. I hope they do very well because they have lot of talent and their skill is impeccable.
I chose Prithviraj and Deol both of them are smart and very talented.
This is your second feature since Kehkashaa, after which you had drifted completely towards documentary films. Why this sudden shift to feature films again?
The infrastructure of showing cinema has improved so vastly with the multiplexes coming in and the audience has also become more receptive to good cinema. Gone are those days when only 'Rikhshawalas' and 'Paanwalas' would watch movies in theatres while the urban population would prefer watching films at home on VCRs. So, I think it's the right time for making good cinema in India. Moreover, I chose to go back to films because it's completely a different medium to experiment, something I really enjoy doing.
Did you find it difficult to get back to the shooting techniques of a feature film after a long gap?
I think cinema has undergone a sea change since I had made Kehkashaa with Mallika Sarabhai, Kittu Gidwani, Victor Banerjee, 25 years ago, especially in terms of technology. However, I must say that my cinematographer Mr. Khaldhar has done a magnificent job, he is a young graduate from FTII. So, things went smoothly on that front. However, problems did arise in the initial days due to monsoons in Calcutta.
I think cinema has undergone a sea change since I had made Kehkashaa with Mallika Sarabhai, Kittu Gidwani, Victor Banerjee, 25 years ago, especially in terms of technology.
Apart from films, you have written novels as well. What is it that you enjoy more?
I like to climb different mountains so for me it's not the same peak (smiles). So, be it filmmaking, writing a novel or a making a documentary, for me all of them are different journeys. Every journey has its own moments of arrival.
Which is your favorite song and scene from the film?
Well, I have written all the songs except for the two ghazals and a song titled 'Ekla Chalo Re', which has been translated. However, my favorite is the theme song, which goes like 'Love is a sweet sad song⦠Love is a game with no rules'. Usha Uthup has done a marvelous job on some of the songs. As far as the scenes are concerned, my favorite scene is when Omji comes back to meet Jayaji and asks about her well-being and no sooner does she turns around that he says 'Hmm, thodi moti ho gayi ho'.
Omji comes back to meet Jayaji and asks about her well-being and no sooner does she turns around that he says 'Hmm, thodi moti ho gayi ho'.
What are your expectations with the film?
It's as good as having an expectation with every child you give birth to. All you can do is wish them good luck. It's same kind of feeling as parents have for their children. Well, I believe in destiny, give your best shot, and leave the rest to God.
It is heard that you have a great rapport with Rajit Kapoor who has done a cameo in the film. Tell us about the experience?
Rajit Kapoor is one of my dearest friends and I am glad that he is a part of my film. I was so reluctant to offer him such a small role. Rajit plays a loud barrister who is also the father of Deol Basu's girlfriend for he is such a wonderful actor.
The eternal music and the terrific performances of all who have worked in this film is the USP.
What is the USP of the film?
The eternal music and the terrific performances of all who have worked in this film is the USP.
Any memorable moments you would like to share with us.
Oh! I enjoyed every moment of the film. I was on the cloud 9 when Jayaji said she had put on three or four kilos because of eating unit food and would love to do another film in Bengal for it. However, the most beautiful moment was when she was to leave for Mumbai after the completion of the film she changed her mind and returned back requesting to stay longer with the crew and spend some more quality time with us. Does the name Mahajabeen Bano ring a bell? It's quite unlikely that many would remember who Mahajabeen Bano was, but if we tell you that she was one of Bollywood's finest actresses in the 50's and 60's, chances are you may start recollecting the various actresses who shone in the golden era and take a guess.
Well we won't test your patience; the actress we are talking about is none other than the incredibly talented late Meena Kumari. Meena (whose original name is Mahajabeen Bano) began her acting career at the tender age of 7. However, she came into the limelight through her role in the popular film Baiju Bawra for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. She later followed up her act of playing a woman in pain in films like Parineeta, Ek Hi Raasta and Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi.
Her career reached the pinnacle of success with the film Saheb, Bibi Aur Ghulam where she played the role of Choti Bahu (an alcoholic wife) alongside stalwarts like Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. Unfortunately for Meena, alcohol became an inseparable part of even her real life which took a toll on her health.
In between all this, she married filmmaker, Kamal Amrohi. It was for Kamal that she went out of the way to complete the cult classic Pakeezah despite her ill-health . Pakeezah finally saw the light of the day in Feb 1972, however a month after its release, the beautiful Meena Kumari left for eternal abode.
On this very day (March 31st), 36 years ago, Indian cinema lost one of its most talented actresses and her sudden departure left a void which was hard to fill. We at Bollywood Hungama pay our respects to the legendary Meena Kumari on her death anniversary. Source: Indiafm.com News | 31 Mar 2008 | 12:47 pm

THE FILM
If there would ever be a book written on '10 best ways to kill a movie at the box office', Strangers would certainly be considered in the list of examples. With good actors at disposal, a decent budget, a unique storyline, an unconventional narrative, very good dialogues and a willing director who wanted to go against the stream; the film's presenters could have pitched the movie in the market a bit more intelligently. Instead, they chose to release it sans any fanfare and the treatment befitted that of an abandoned child.
Result? The film got a 'near-dead' release with its director Anand Kumar and actor Jimmy Sheirgill being the only people who seemed to be excited about its fate. The film sadly met with an abysmal box office response and its main hopes lied with the DVD release.
For any thriller to work, it needs to get a terrific kick start to its narrative. Strangers achieves this perfectly well as director Rai gets your attention bang on in the first two sequences itself. Jimmy being escorted by the police and the beginning of a flashback (with Jimmy and Kay Kay meeting in a train) get the stage set for Strangers to emerge as a gripping tale. In fact, what strikes most is director using the medium of cinematography (excellent - by Manoj Shaw), background score (true to the film's thrilling mood - by Vinay Tiwari) and editing (crisp, which restricts 'Strangers' to a 90 minutes watch - by Sanjay Sankla) in these opening sequences which ensures that Strangers turns out to be a quality product.
With an exception of Sonali Kulkarni whose role demands her to ham (she is a woman who has lost her son and is unable to come out of that depression), each of the other three actors give a good account of themselves. While Jimmy comes up with his best act ever, Kay Kay is controlled and impressive as ever. However, the person who surprises most is Nandana Sen who enacts her complex part pretty well. She deserves to be seen more in author backed roles.
With its dialogues switching between Hindi and English, Strangers is an urban tale about two strangers who talk about their experiences and troubles with their respective wives - Nandana Sen and Sonali Kulkarni. No, the film isn't a take on Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train, as has been widely speculated. Yes, the basic germ of the plot is extracted from the Hollywood classic but the sequences which narrate the tale or the numerous twists (mainly in the second half) truly zap a viewer.
Shot entirely in UK, Strangers not just relies on a European setting and ambience but is also shot as a film which could have well been made in Europe. In fact, for a viewer who mainly watches Bollywood flicks, Strangers turns out to be a unique experience. Whether it is tongue in cheek humor (watch out for the way Jimmy interacts with Kay Kay and how pre-climax and climax justify the reason behind that) or the brief interludes on life's philosophy (which makes for an interesting conversation between the two leads) - everything just manages to bring on a different perspective to Strangers.
Of course, the facts as stated above are also the reason why the film is not everyone's cup of tea. Strangers isn't what one may call as a mainstream Bollywood offering but for those who want their brains to be pretty much active, involved and in synch with the director's vision, it would turn out to be an engaging watch!
PACKAGING
The film comes in a standard local plastic case with a decent cover layout. Since the DVD comes on Moser Baer, don't expect any fancy packaging.

CONCLUSION
As one watches the film on DVD, there are two clear takeaways - a) Emergence of a new talented director in the form of Anand L Rai and b) Jimmy Sheirgill, who continues to make his presence felt loud and clear in each and every project of his. Truly, Strangers is his most complex role till date and he handles it with utmost maturity. An actor who deserves to go further higher up in the ladder, he is waiting to be lapped up by film makers who matter! Watch Strangers - you would be pleasantly surprised!

There's this guy who comes quite early into this wacked-out comedy to serve Sameera Reddy, a car showroom owner, a notice. He smiles and delivers his murderous missive, turns on his heels wears a frown and vanishes.
The thing about Ashwani Dheer's flaky but frequently funny farce is that it's got accomplished comic actors in the smallest of parts. Watch out for the seasoned Marathi actress who plays Tusshar's mother. All she wishes for her son is that he excels in his work, namely killing people. She sends him off on his first murderous spree in Pondicherry (where most of the acned, knock-kneed but never hackneyed action unfolds).
Tusshar ends up at the doorstep of the wrong person, a loud Tamilian scrambled-brained lingerie designer (Esha Deol, cute and loud). Lingerie, or kachcha-banyan, as Paresh Rawal insists on calling them plays a big part in covering up the broadly exposed bases in this situational comedies where the best moments are those that the actors take over from the screenwriter and make their own.
Mukesh Tiwari displaying an unusual penchant for parody (forget the unfunny Buddha Mar Gaya) adding an extra 's' to every English word, is like Rakhi Sawant gone wrong. And Tiwari's two sidekicks have their own subplots. One of them makes bombs that never go off in time.
Luckily 123 gets its timing right most of the time. It's a war of nerves between the writer and the audience, as the one tries to outpace the other. Eventually, the audience does get tired of watching three guys with the same name Laxmi Narayan getting mixed up in situations where the spoken words give nothing, and everything, away. But our fatigue is slackened by the unslackened physical energy that the characters bring to the minutest of moments.
Ashwani Dheer comes from the sitcom culture on television. Nowhere does his framing or shot-taking give away his cramped antecedents. He enjoys the large open spaces that his crowded cast populates with parodic panache pouncing on the preposterousness in the plot with famished energy.
The cast is uniformly in-sync with the director's vision, not allowing the shards of farce to be frittered away unused. The smallest of cast member knows the job on hand. But Suniel Shetty gets as far away from his macho image as humanly possible as the timorous timid proper and punctual Laxmi Narayan on the run with a reined-in enthusiasm. We've seen Suniel do comedy before. But never so straight faced and sharp. He's a surprise.
Tusshar Kapoor as Mama's pet out to make his first kill is extremely accomplished. He labours over the loud comedy and gets the volume right. Paresh Rawal selling lingerie with uninhibited pride is not the outright winner as he usually is in these comedies. Has Paresh got complacent? Or have Suniel, Tusshar and co. got better at the funny stuff?
If only director Dheer had avoided the excessive crudity especially in Suniel's prolonged sequence in the public loo with the cheesy hitman.
"Main nahin pukdunga," he protests in a panic as the other actor (another small-time scene stealer in this festival of interesting actors) reaches into his pants. Panic -attacks dominate the lives of these flustered characters. These lovable losers try to sell lingerie and cars while the director repackages the Shakespearean comedy of errors in a new auto-pilot manoeuvre that doesn't quite have you holding your sides.
But the chuckles don't stop. Shortest role in the history of the comic farce goes to Upen Patel and Tanissha. They come in with a song and go out with a bang. In-between they lose their grip over the giggle trip. Director Ashwani Dheer quits while he's ahead. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 31 Mar 2008 | 9:45 am

Himesh has had enough of his status as a one-man music industry. At least for now.
He wants to introduce at least one new singer in each one of his forthcoming starrers.
Himesh feels he owes it to the industry. "I think I must give new talent to the music industry because even I was a newcomer once. And fresh untried talent always works since my music usually caters to a younger audience which is always on the look-out for fresh unconventional voices."
For Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekh Mudh Mudh Ke which is a love triangle, Himesh intends to introduce new singing talent for the two leading ladies Niharika Singh and Jennifer Kotwal. "I came across some mind-blowing female voices while I was judging Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. I'll be using these for M2KNDM2K". On Friday, Himesh Reshammiya recorded his 75th song.
"I've already released fifty songs and I intend to use the twenty-five songs that I've in my music bank for the four films Karzzzz, Kajraare, A Love Issshtory and M2KNDM2K that I'm starring in.â Himesh intends to introduce four new singers in these four films. Having played the loud Tamilian rather loudly in 123, Esha Deol is quite embarrassed at the noise decibel she has raised in the film. "It's what the role required. It's what I was required to do. I followed what the director Ashwani Dheer wanted. But when I saw myself on screen at the premiere I cringed a bit."
Esha's one regret. Her mom, the irradiant Hema Malini, couldn't be there to watch her daughter play a Tamilian. "My mother has become quite a jet-setter traveling all over the place for her dance recitals. She's in Kolkata right now. I'll make her see 123 as soon as she returns."
The boisterous bit on screen notwithstanding, Esha was quite the lady at the premiere in her chic makeup and elegant gown. "I guess I wanted to create a contrast to my loud brassy character in the film (laughs). People see me as a tomboy. But I can be quite a lady if I want to be."
Esha is now gearing up for the release of her first kick-ass action film Hijack. "But let me warn you, I don't do any of the kickboxing and all that stuff I'm dying to do on screen one day. Though this is a hijack-adventure story, all the action converges on Shiny Ahuja. I'm the air hostess therefore very timid and gentle. The director, Kunal Shivdasani, made sure I don't jump out of character suddenly. It's a very realistic action drama."
She dismisses all the stories of her differences with Shiney. "I don't know where that came from. Shiney and I had a great time shooting Hijack." Hijack would be Esha's last film for a while. "I haven't signed anything. And I won't until something worthwhile comes along." Source: Indiafm.com Features | 31 Mar 2008 | 8:42 am

Race
It is truly a one horse 'race' currently as no album from the past has been able to challenge this Pritam soundtrack. 'Race' is one of those rare albums where practically each and every song has turned out to be a chartbuster, especially after being witnessed on the big screen. This one is going to stay on at the top for quite a while.

Jodhaa Akbar
Though there is a distance between 'Race' and 'Jodhaa Akbar', the latter continues to be in a dominating position with no other album truly challenging it's place in the charts. While the film would be completing 50 day run at the box office this weekend, the music is expected to sell well for at least 50 more days!
'Tashan' has released and is expected to give the albums at the top a run for their money. 'Jodhaa Akbar' is certainly expected to be hit hard for the place up in the charts.

Jannat
Just week there was a mention around how a little more push could help 'Jannat' break into Top-3. Well, that has pretty much happened with 'Lambi Judai' catching up fast. Entry of 'Jannat' in the charts means Pritam now has two albums in Top-3.
Somehow one gets the sense that Bhatts are not yet going all out in the music promotion and mainly relying upon word of mouth. It could be fine for some more days to come but by mid-April, it would only help the album if the aggression is on-your-face!
