Boman and Shabana are the 'Perfect Parents'

As they say, 'It is only few things in life that commands a repeat value, the remaining others demand it'. Likewise, one such 'commanding' pair is that of the versatile Boman Irani and the mega talented Shabana Azmi, who, after having created sheer magic with their screen presence in the blockbuster Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., will be now be seen as husband-wife combination in Onir's Sorry Bhai. The film's shooting will be done is Mauritius. For the uninitiated, the on-screen kiss between Boman and Shabana in their last film did raise many an eyebrows. Onir, who was on a lookout for actors who can do full justice to the ole of 'perfect parents' zeroed down on this pair as he felt that its this pair that fits the role to a 'T'. The other cast of the film include Chitrangdha, Sharman Joshi, and Sanjay Suri.

DVD Review: Superstar

MOVIE DETAILS Cast: Kunal Khemu, Tulip Joshi, Aushima Sawhney, Reema Lagoo, Sharat Saxena, Vrajesh Hirjee, Darshan Jariwala Director: Rohit Jugraj Producer: Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd Music: Shamir Tandon Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed THE FILM To state a fact right at the beginning, the film completely belongs to Kunal Khemu. In a double role of a struggler and a soon-to-be-launched producer-son, Kunal enacts the varied parts with aplomb. What director Rohit Jugraj does right is by not showing two contrasting sides of the two roles which Kunal plays. He doesn't try making it a 'black' and 'white' exercise or conveniently choose a path where the dissimilarities between rich and poor is shown. Instead, what turns out to be common between the two is their innocence, almost carefree approach towards their career (the struggler laughs at his lack of success but still continues to move on, the boy with a silver spoon laughs at the hardcore Bollywood lines he is required to mouth) and the relationship each of them shares with their fathers. While struggler's dad (enacted quite well by Sharad Saxena), wants him to get a 9 to 6 job, the producer dad (Darshan Jariwala, hamming away to glory) wants his son to become a 'super star' at all costs. Result is that both are dissatisfied with the career path their fathers have chosen for them! However, the film isn't without its share of lows. MMS and sting operation looks gimmicky while at a couple of places (in both the haves), the narrative stagnates a little. The production values are just about decent while both the girls (Tulip and Aushima) have hardly any part to play. Superstar just doesn't rely on fun elements. Though romance is more or less missing in this tale which is completely centered on Kunal, there are a couple of emotional and dramatic moments which get your concentration spot on the screen. The scene where duplicate is brought on to stand up for the original (Kunal's dance is excellent here) or when Kunal visits his parents in the second half, stand out for their execution. Sequences in the hospital and the premiere, in the climax, are well executed. Also notable is the track 'Man Tu Telebet' which plays twice in the background. There is something about Superstar which doesn't make one give up completely on it. Though the film didn't work at the box office when released just a week before Jodhaa Akbar, one always felt that this film would have it's moments of high . Also, the Kunal Khemu’s presence makes one almost sure that Superstar' would boast of good performances. After all, the young boy has been having a good record, performance wise, be it Kalyug, Traffic Signal or Dhol. And it won't be wrong to say that in Superstar, Kunal comes trump with his most mature performance in a complex role till date! PACKAGING The film comes in a standard local plastic case with a decent cover layout. Since the DVD comes on Moser Baer, don't expect any fancy packaging. DURATION The film comes in a single DVD pack with the film's duration being 140 minutes. SPECIAL FEATURES The DVD doesn't come with any special features. TECHNICAL DETAILS - 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format - Subtitles In English - Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo PRICE Rs. 49/= CONCLUSION No, unlike popular misconception, Superstar is not Tere Mere Sapne [Arshad Warsi, Chandrachur Singh] revisited. Though many felt before the release of the film that Superstar is a story about the two Kunals swapping their places, this hardly is the case as the twist in the tale is far stronger. In fact, it is this twist which brings a complete turnaround in the proceedings. Of course there are cinematic liberties taken here but it doesn't pinch badly either. A one time watch for a lazy Sunday afternoon! Rating: **1/2

Nandita Das in a Pakistani film

Nandita Das, the queen of unconventional cinema, has gone one step ahead by signing a film titled Ramchand Pakistani which is directed by a young Pakistani filmmaker Mehreen Jabar. The film also stars some famous television actors from Pakistan. Throwing some light on the story of the film Nandita says, "The story is inspired by a real life incident and revolves around a small seven year old boy (Ramchand) who along with his father (Hindu Dalit settled in Pakistan) accidentally crosses the border. The story moves parallel between the father-son in Kutch jail and the mother left in a small village in Pakistan, unaware about the whereabouts of her family." Talking about director Mehreen, she says, "I met Mehreen at Kara Film Festival where Bawandar was to be screened. Later on, we became friends and she narrated me this story which I found very powerful. She is a very intelligent and a sensitive director." On asking about her character in the film, Nandita informs, "I play the mother of Ramachand, a Hindu dalit who is a Pakistani by Nationality named Champa. There are lot of Hindu Dalit families who were left behind during the partition in the Sindh area. In fact, their language and their ways of dressing is very similar to that of people living in Rajasthan and Gujarat border area." She further says, "The film also brings in the limelight the complexities of being a Hindu dalit and Pakistani at the same time, in an Indian jail." Ramachand Pakistani will be showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Will an American girl star in London Dreams?

“I recently met a girl from America whom I think was exceptionally talented.” Is she the one who'll star along with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in your next directorial venture London Dreams? “Maybe…” disclosed hot shot film maker Vipul Shah to Bollywood Hungama putting to rest all the rumours surrounding Kareena Kapoor or Katrina Kaif being the chosen ones. “It could be any girl. I'm not looking at region. I'm looking at talent,” he added. London Dreams, a film which was earlier supposed to be directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi had made national news when Salman's bare-chested stills while taking a dip in holy waters of Golden Temple were splashed on front pages of all newspapers. Vipul puts speculation to rest on both, London Dreams and his Rs 50 crore production, Singh Is Kinng. And yes, Salman-Ajay may be his latest heroes but he shall revert back to his dependable superstar Akshay Kumar in January 2009 with another directorial venture. London Dreams 1) I am the producer-director of London Dreams. PJ Singh (the earlier producer) will be the Presenter of the film, a role played by Adlabs in my earlier films. 2) Me and Salman had been discussing a project for a very long time. There came a moment when he asked me if I want to consider this. I said I would but I would first like to meet Mr Raj Kumar Santoshi. I met him and he was very happy that probably I will take over. He gave me his consent. 3) I spoke to Sridhar Raghavan, the writer of the film and told him that since I want to rewrite the film the way I feel it should be made and would he like to be a part of it. He said yes. 4) The scenes that were shot with Salman Khan at Golden Temple are not part of my draft. I haven't seen the earlier footage and even if I have to shoot at Golden Temple, I'll shoot afresh. 5) Shankar-Ehsan-Loy will compose the music for the film. We start working on it in the first week of April. The lyricist is yet to be decided. It's too early to talk about what kind of music it will be. 6) The storyline in the earlier film that Mr Santoshi was making was about two musicians. My draft is completely new and it is concentrating more on the relationship of Salman, Ajay and the girl. 7) London Dreams will be releasing sometime next year. Singh Is Kinng 1) We start shooting for a song with Akshay and Katrina in Mumbai from tomorrow (which means today). It's a song that's worth watching out for. 2) Katrina is very dedicated. For buying an outfit for the film she went to Dubai rather than getting something from Mumbai itself. But I think she should dub her own voice now. 3) There was no controversy while shooting in Australia. The local Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee had got mails from certain 'well wishers' within our industry stating that the Sikh community is being presented in a bad light in the film. They were concerned and had a chat with us. We showed them all the footage, pictures, what the story was all about. After that they gave a press release in Ajit, a newspaper in Punjab that they are more than satisfied with the way the film is progressing. 4) We shall be shooting a song in Egypt which is an integral part of the film. We will be starting the schedule very soon. 5) The film is being shot in Punjab, Egypt, some parts in Canada and Australia. 6) Singh Is Kinng is releasing in August, 2008.

How Pawan Malhotra lost Brick Lane to Satish Kaushik!

Pawan Malhotra lost the coveted role of the boorish Bangladeshi immigrant in Sarah Gavron's much-acclaimed Brick Lane at the eleventh hour. "I was finalized .They even took me to London for a week. They auditioned 400 actors. Finally, they zeroed in on me. They needed a fat guy. The director and the casting director selected me and decided to make me fat through makeup. It was okay by them to spend three hours every morning doing my fat -man's makeup." So what happened? "My dates for Brick Lane clashed with my dates for Farhan Akhtar's Don. I even tried to make adjustments. By then it was too late. And to think Satish Kaushik who got the role wasn't even auditioned initially. That's destiny, I guess. But physically he suits the role perfectly whereas I'd have had to do three hours of makeup every morning. But the director felt I was perfect for the part. She even agreed to postpone her film. But I'm happy Satish and the film are being critically acclaimed. As an actor I feel bad, though." This would've been Pawan's second British film after the well-received Brothers In Trouble in 1995 where Pawan had played an illegal Pakistani immigrant in England. Right now Pawan is doing Bhoomi directed by cinematographer Aveek Mukhopadhyay, all over Bihar, Kashmir and Assam. Pawan is not too happy with the way the popular awards are treating actors like him. "Pankaj Kapoor was nominated for a negative role in The Blue Umbrella. Aamir told me they want stars nominated even for supporting roles. You want to bring Pankaj to the stage and yet make sure he doesn't clash with the commercial stars. But if you sideline a performance like Pankaj Kapoor's in Blue Umbrella or mine in Black Friday, there's something seriously wrong with the awards. The awards juries need to first understand the categories. When I did Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Bagh Bahadur and Saeed Mirza's Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro during the same year, there was actually a dispute in the National Awards jury as to which performance should be awarded. Today, I feel Salim Langde would be nominated for best villain. I played the goonda with a lot of vulnerability. Likewise, I don't think my role as Tiger Memon is an out and out negative role in Black Friday." Pawan who divorced his first wife, theatre TV person and author Aparjita Krishan is now married to script writer Aparna who has written the dialogues for Samar Khan's Shaurya. "My earlier marriage ended long back. Even after our marriage had ended we stayed in the same house trying to be civil with one another while she looked for a place of her own. I had become almost a recluse. I still am. But I'm now very happily married to Aparna. She's a very talented writer. She was part of the research team and also an assistant for Black Friday. That's where I met her. She's also done beautiful dialogues in Shaurya," says the ever-smiling Pawan who has also done a walk-on cameo on Shaurya for his wife's sake. "I wouldn't say it's for her sake. I just believe in that kind of cinema. Destiny plays a great hand in shaping your life and career."

Satish Kaushik hospitalized

Satish Kaushik who's currently confined to bed after a surgery plans to ask his new blue-eyed boy, Himesh Reshammiya, to compose a promotional song for Kaushik's teen romance Tere Sang. "Tere Sang needs a promotional prop. And who better able to provide it than Himesh? Coincidentally, both me and my Tere Sang hero, Ruslaan Mumtaz, are currently confined to bed. He's so accident prone. While we were shooting Tere Sang he fell off the bicycle and had a serious injury. Now he has torn a ligament in his knee while I am recovering from a minor surgery. This is a good time for me to work on the music of our film." Satish Kaushik who has just returned from 35 days of shooting with Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar for Karzzzz in South Africa can't stop praising his two stars. "They're such professionals and so clued in to the technicalities of cinema. I was amazed by Himesh's ability to deliver long dialogues with the right pauses for breath and punctuation. This rhythm in the speech patterns is generally lacking in our film actors. The last time I saw an actor convey the same rhythm in speech was that other singer-actor Kishore Kumar." As for Urmila, "The last time I worked with her was when I was assisting Shekhar Kapoor for Masoom. She was just a child then. In-between we were supposed to do a full-on masala film called Bus Conductor. But she opted out. Now for Karzzzz, she's so passionately involved."

Diwali gets bigger & bigger

Remember you read this on Bollywood Hungama first, as always! Although we're several months away from Diwali, several dream merchants have already set their eyes on the festive week. In fact, a number of films have already been confirmed for release in the festive week this year. Sometime back, we had told you that Subhash Ghai's YUVRAAJ, Ashtavinayak - Rohit Shetty's GOLMAAL RETURNS and Yash Raj's ROADSIDE ROMEO [an animation film produced in association with Walt Disney] have already locked the date [October 24]. There's talk that Karan Johar is also bringing DOSTANA [Abhishek, Priyanka, John] on this date. Now here's a piping hot development pertaining to the Diwali week. Nikhil Advani's CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, which marks the foray of Hollywood giant Warner Bros. in Hindi films, is also confirmed for Diwali. Not on October 24, but on October 29. Not on a Friday, but on a Wednesday. Reason being, people would be busy with the festivities and visiting each other all through the festive week. The occupancy at movieplexes, therefore, might take a hit during certain days. The business would only escalate once the festivities and festival-related ceremonies get over. Hence, it's October 29 for CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.

"Background score is the backbone of every film" - Sanjay Choudhary

When a film releases, we often talk about the stars, the plot, the drama, the suspense, the romance and it's ever growing popular music. We've also seen biggies giving credit to the spot boys and lights men, from the 'chai wala' bringing 'chai' on the sets to the smallest of the technicians. But in this very exclusive interview Sanjay Choudhary, son of yesteryears music maestro Salil Choudhary, breaks his silence as to why the Hindi Film Industry doesn't recognize the background score as the backbone of any film in all major award functions. He also talks about his achievements, his past and much more. How and when did you first decide to enter Bollywood as a background music composer? Composition started for me at the age of 7. But the first film for which I worked as a background music composer / director was the 1996 Aamir Khan starrer Sarfarosh. I've worked with my father, Salil Choudhary who gave background music for films like Anand starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. I played the percussion during the background score of Anand. I was just 7 back then. I then got the on-hand learning process from my father like how to make the background score. He also taught me the aspects of story reading and how to match the background score with the screenplay of the film. To learn to make the background score is a completely different art and it runs parallel to the screenplay. My father, Salil Choudhary, gave background music for Anand and I played the percussion for it back then What changes have you seen taking place in the background score or music in general over the years? Composing background score requires melody and doing the arrangements. But that is according to the situation of a particular scene I'm looking at. But in the early days, song compositions were done on situations, where the situation was created as a screenplay. Today, there is no particular situation created for a song. The song is just composed, the director selects the song and then decides on the situation like where the song can be placed or used in the film. There are many compositions of my father's background score, which were then turned into famous songs during his time. Do you at all edit the background score? I try and get into the scene and chat to my director as to what thought he has in his mind. I put my thought together and then we see how close we come in our level of thinking. I then create that into the score and arrange it according to whatever instrumentation is required for that particular sequence. What is your style? The whole thought process of scoring the background music is very different. I'm very screenplay oriented, story oriented and character oriented which now-a-days is not taken into consideration. My background compositions are not to be heard in the film but it has to be felt. I create a subtle background score, which takes the film forward, and then suddenly you realize that there was a score behind. Right from Sarfarosh till now, I have a different style in creating background score. My background compositions are not to be heard in the film but it has to be felt. I create a subtle background score, which takes the film forward. Is it challenging enough just like what the music directors' job is? Background score is the backbone of any film but very few from our Hindi Film Industry agree to it. The best thing about creating background music for any film is that you have complete freedom to choose and experiment with the score which you create. That makes my job challenging because we come up with something new all the time. Which directors have you enjoyed working with? There are certain directors who are very particular about their films' background score. They shoot their film with the thought process of the background score in their mind. Like Jab We Met, the film that I worked on and in my forthcoming Samir Karnik film Heroes. These directors give a lot of importance to background score until the whole film is over. They know what they want and what they can get from me. So it makes our job more exciting and easy. Are you given any specific timeline or deadline to deliver your final product? That depends on director to director. Some of them want it in a fortnight because they don't have time and that in turn becomes tedious for us. I like giving it a thought, make notifications of the scenes and then take about 20 to 25 days to complete the score. Any particular thought you'd like to share with us what I may have missed out on? I would like to send across this message through Bollywood Hungama that I am sad that the Hindi Film Industry have recognized the background music as one of the technical awards in all major award functions. That's not done. I wonder why the music director category is not considered as a technical one? Music, be it any kind, should be treated on an equal level. I like giving the background score a thought, make notifications of the scenes and then take about 20 to 25 days to complete the score. What has been your favourite background score you've composed and what's next in the pipeline? My favourite background composition has to be my first film Sarfarosh. Then the recent Jab We Met. I also liked Zinda, Chocolate, and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal because all three were experimental films. We've used hip-hop, rap, Indian, Western, classical, etc. You name it and we have used every bit of it in our background music. That was different. Right now, I'm working on Samir Karnik's film Heroes and will be soon starting Sunil Shetty's production film called EMI staring Sanjay Dutt. Another film I'm really looking forward to is Wednesday, a UTV production directed by Neeraj Pandey staring Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher. I've done my best work for that film so far and it's due for release in April or May.

Kunal and Jimmy for Mahyoddha Ram

Kunal Kapoor and Jimmy Sheirgill have lent their voices to the characters of Ram and Laxman respectively in Rohit Vaid's Mahayoddha Ram under Contiloe Pictures. Mahayoddha Ram which apparently is Vaid's directorial debut, is a VFX driven 3-D animation film. In addition to Jimmy and Kunal, Gulshan Grover and Sameera Reddy have also given their voices for Ravana and Sita's characters. Throwing some light on the story of the film, Vaid informs, "Mahayoddha Ram cuts out the extraneous of Ramayan by highlighting the very fight between Ram and Ravana over Sita. Ram versus Ravana in contemporary times is what Mahayoddha Ram is in totality." Interestingly, there will be ten different voices for all the ten heads of Ravana in the film. Vaid further adds, "The film is full of special effects with trees destroying themselves and Brahma disappearing. However, my two favorite scenes which need to be mentioned here are first, the aggressively shot construction of the bridge while crossing Lanka and the war scene where Inderjeet (Ravana's son) takes on Ram and Laxman." Jimmy Sheirgill in all praises for the director Rohit Vaid says, "Rohit is a very intelligent director. I was so amazed to witness the kind of preparations he had done before signing me for Laxman's voice." Aadesh Shrivastav has composed the background score for the film. Ashok Banker has written the screenplay and Javed Akhtar has penned down the lyrics. The film is expected to release by the end of the year in December.

"Race 2 is not ruled out" - Abbas Mustan

Race has opened to a record breaking response and as things stand today, at worse this TIPS film is a box office HIT. No wonder, director duo of Abbas and Mustan is on cloud nine with Race coming as a shot in the arm, especially after Naqaab and 36 China Town not doing particularly well at the box office. The obvious question which the filmmakers are being faced with - Would Race have a sequel? After all it is pretty much a possibility. - The film's ending was open ended and two of the main protagonists who supposedly get killed aren't actually shown dead on screen. Also, the relationship between the other two protagonists too has been left open for speculation. What does the director duo feel about this? Says Abbas, "Yes, it is true that the ending of Race has been left open. In fact Ramesh Taurani has been having discussions with us to see if we can develop the plot further and get a sequel in the running." - With the film getting a huge response, it would indeed be quite challenging to get something as interesting, engaging and 'twisting' as the original, if not more! After all, audience won't be settling down for anything lesser when it comes to shock value and surprises in store at every corner, isn't it? "I agree", laughs Abbas, "This is exactly the reason why we have to be extra careful even in announcing the sequel to the film. First of all we have to get the film right on paper and then plan ahead on execution. However, on his part, Ramesh Taurani has already registered Race 2 as a title. So yes, we are not ruling out the possibility of a sequel being made. If we get a script in place which is even better than the original, we will certainly go for it." - Meanwhile Race continues to do crazy business at the box office. Not just has it's opening being phenomenal (22 crores net in 3 days) and is in comparison with Bollywood's biggest money spinner Om Shanti Om, it is looking forward to an extended business with One Two Three (March 28) being it's only notable opposition till 11th April (when U Me Aur Hum and Krazzy 4 arrive).
