Book on superstar Rajnikant's life released

It was an 'event' waiting (with bated breath) to happen! And it has happened and how and by whom! Well, we are talking about the first biography of none other than destiny's darling child: Rajnikant. The book is titled 'The Name Is Rajnikant'. It's been published by Om Books International and is priced at Rs 490. The interesting aspect of this book is that its author Dr Gayathri Srikanth is an ophthalmologist and has written the book without meeting the Superstar even once. The book traces Rajnikant's journey from being a child belonging to a lower income group family to his success as an actor. The author candidly confessed that the reason why she chose Rajnikant as the subject was because she felt that his counterparts like SRK, Big B have their official biographies and it was only him without one. She also added that when she searched for Rajnikant on the internet, she found out that he grew up motherless as a child, and had a very bad childhood. Later on, he had to work as a coolie, then a bus conductor and lastly became the Superstar. That's when she decided to meet up with Rajnikant's wife, then convinced her about the book and went ahead to write down all the possible information that she could gather from all over about Rajnikant, the eternal Superstar that India has ever produced! With almost 20,000 copies of the book hitting the stands, the book's publisher said that the book will also be published in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi and Japanese. Do we hear you saying 'There's nothing that Rajni-Can't?'

Bhandarkar joins Ratnam, Ray, Adoor, Benegal

Madhur Bhandarkar's trilogy of Mumbai based movies is joining the annals of films that have not just been appreciated in India but have also made an impression internationally. To ensure that his films make their presence felt across the globe, National Film Archive of India, Pune, has invited the trio of Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal for their archives. His other National award winning film Chandni Bar is already preserved in the archives. What is notable is the fact that before Bhandarkar, it is films made by some great names such as Mani Ratnam, Satyajit Ray, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen amongst others which have a found a place in the archives. With majority of his films becoming a part of the history in the making, this certainly is a step ahead in the right direction for Bhandarkar. Says Bhandarkar from Pune, "It is a great honor to have one's films find recognition at such a level. In fact I want to extend thanks to Sahara and Percept, producers of these films, for sharing the prints with the National Film Archive of India. This is good recognition for not just me but the entire crew which has worked with such passion in bringing Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal to such a platform." What does it mean for the films to be stored in archives? "The idea is to showcase these films to students and various institutes. Also, if there are any international film festivals being held, prints would be sent from National Film Archive of India. It works as a central repository of all films that are required to be screened at different events for years to come", informs Bhandarkar. Bhandarkar's films being archived in National Film Archive of India is not a solitary instance of recognition of his accomplished work over the years. In the past, most of his films (which have been acclaimed at national and international level) have even formed a part of case studies or even course curriculums. "I do work on my films with honesty and awards, rewards and recognitions which follow do come as added incentives. Of course, it feels good to see your films being taken seriously over the years. My name will always be associated with quality films and I hope that they continue to succeed in entertaining and enlightening the audience", concludes Bhandarkar.

Top 5 Women oriented films in Bollywood

She is soft and yet very strong inside. Her endurance is beyond imagination. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burden with equal ease. She displays many emotions from joy to jealousy, from fear to fondness and from sadness to surprise. What's more she is truly someone who wears many hats each day as a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter and a professional and yet excels in all her roles. She is none other than the Woman. Even in reel-life, no Bollywood potboiler is complete without a woman's presence. Her presence simply lights up the screens thereby creating an unmatchable aura within the dark confines of the cinema hall. Hence, on this special occasion of Women's Day Bollywood Hungama takes a trip down memory lane and brings you some of the top women oriented films to have hit the silver screen. Lajja In a land where women are worshipped in the name of Laxmi and Durga, they are also tortured, abused, humiliated and sometimes killed. Lajja showcases the journey of one such woman (Manisha Koirala) who is on the run, hiding from her husband. Whilst on this expedition to seek safety, she comes across three strong-minded women (Mahima Chaudhary, Madhuri Dixit and Rekha) who are bearing the punishment of being independent women. Drawing relevance to real life situations, the film makes one aware that though our society has progressed, somewhere these malpractices still continue against women. Lajja is the poignant story of those women who become prey to man's malevolence but still continue to fight. Dor Life has varied stages for women, but worst is if in the due course she loses her life partner forever. Dor is one such movie wherein Ayesha Takia married at a young age is forced to renounce happiness and live a life of repentance when her husband dies. When a family member dies, it sure is a moaning period but for how long will a woman moan. Doesn't she have the right to be happy ever again? Somehow, a woman is expected to moan all her life. Ayesha Takia's character in Dor suffers everyday. Gul Panag, who becomes Ayesha's friend, then makes her release that her life is not over and that she deserves to live happily like any other human being. Ayesha takes her first step towards her new life and moves on. Chak De India Very often sports are considered as a male dominant activity. Chak De India discards this pre-conceived notion. The film throws light on the forgotten game (which is also our national game), Hockey, and displays how the 'chakla belan chalane wali ladkiyan' can also make their nation proud. Chak De India emphasizes that women may not be physically stronger than men, but can put up a strong fight with undying energy and can match them even in the toughest of sport. Not just emphasizing on the physical fitness, but the film through the characters of Vidya Sharma and Preeti Sabarwal, also shows that women are very much capable of creating space for themselves in a so called 'male dominated' society. Astitva Is the identity of a woman always marked with that of her husband's? Does a woman have a separate identity within a marriage? Astitva is the story of a woman (Tabu), who forgets herself and her desires to fulfill her duty as a devoted loyal wife. Where a man, (Sachin Khedekar) can break the laws of marriage and gets forgiven, a woman is condemned for the same. Living in the 21st century, when the so called 'broad-minded' son refuses to accept her, she decides that it is never too late to rediscover her lost identity. The film very clearly indicates that women can stand with or without men. Just because she has immense patience and endurance, one must not take her for granted. Her silence does not signify her ignorance. Mother India When we talk of women oriented films, it is impossible to not include Mother India. The film was a complete package of social relevance. It narrates the story of a village woman (Nargis) who supports her husband in his work and also manages home. After an accident when Rajkumar loses his hands, Nargis takes over as the earning member of the family. Even when her husband runs away looking at his helplessness to get the family out of debt, she stands determined to fight the survival match. A disaster strikes when the entire village is swept away by floods. She also loses her youngest child in it. But the woman remains strong fending for her two sons for whom she is both the mother and the father. She fought for what she believed in and stood up against injustice, even if that meant to sacrifice her own son, because she believed what he was doing was wrong. Such is the trait of a woman. She can be humble and forgiving, but at the same time, if needed, she can also be merciless.

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Black & White

A standing ovation for Subhash Ghai for venturing into a territory that would characteristically be considered uninviting for an escapist entertainer. Black & White doesn't impress you merely because it's a daring deviation for the Showman. It's well-crafted finely-written and packaged piece of cinema done with more heartfelt Gandhian articulations than most films in recent times that have merchandized poor Gandhiji in Munna-tones of bubble-gum philosophy. You don't often come away from a film disturbed yet hopeful about the distending dimensions of modern-day violence and terrorism. We did it in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se, Gulzar's Maachis and Santosh Sivan's Terrorist. Now we feel a genuine concern for the collapse of Gandhi's secular dream in India, as Chandni Chowk (which is rapidly becoming a favourite haunting-ground for Hindi movie-makers) becomes a bustling hotbed of terrorist activities. Into this arena of imposed constitutional caprices comes Numair Qazi (Anurag Sinha) a victim of atrocities in Afghanistan posing as a casualty of the Gujarat riots. After a stage-managed gun battle in the toasted-brown hinterland of Delhi , the seething simmering silent Numair wins over the super-secular Prof Mathur (Anil Kapoor) and his feisty wife Roma (Shefali Shah) and gets himself a pass into the VIP enclave for the Republic Day parade at the Red Fort. In all honesty, much of Ghai's newspaper-generated politics is amateurish and simplistic. The terrorists and the intelligence wing look as terrifying and intelligent as an episode of the long-running TV serial CID. And what was the need to make Anil-Shefali's little daughter mute? Maybe Ghai wanted us to take the Black part of his film's title seriously. Everyone bustles around looking brilliantly self-absorbed while pretending to be wedded to a greater 'cause' of which they seem to know as little as the director. What makes Black & White special are the bondings, brittle or beefy, that form out of the sketchy political backdrop. Ghai fills the center of the plot with people who have the ability to reach out to each other within a social framework that's rapidly romancing dementia. Most memorable of all is the old but fiery Muslim poet-professor, played with hungering humility by veteran actor Habib Tanvir. The film's best and most moving lines are rightfully written for Tanvir. In one sequence, a young musician gifts the old man with a sherwani after having sold his poetry for a song. Habib recalls how in all his years no one, not even his own sons, had gifted him anything…Or that other sequence under a tree where a callow news anchor approaches Tanvir for a bite and he wonders, 'Ab mujhe kisse bite karna hoga?" This interesting character's sense of betrayal for having unknowingly harboured a hardcore terrorist in his house never comes through. The screenplay (Ghai, Aakash Khurana and Sachin Bhaumik) is littered with limp and half-finished loops of storytelling where the director seems to have lost his way, only to quickly get his plot back on its foot through some sharp lines (Ghai's dialogues are spicy and hard-hitting) and Somak Mukherjee's cinematography which captures the quaint kashish, tragic decadence and teeming colours of Old Delhi to create both romance and intrigue. The interplay of relationships is restrained most of the time. Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah look more like a couple than Shefali and Darshan Jariwala did in Gandhi My Father. Her- excessively enthusiastic activism and Anil's chronic embarrassment at his wife's over-zealous flag-waving provide the lighter moments in this distinctly-dark drama of secular devaluation in a society where minorityism has become a symptom of persecution complexes and complexities. Ghai doesn't delve deeply into those complexities….Out of choice or because he cannot…we do not know. But the lightness of treatment and the overt filminess of certain interludes (girl nextdoor falls in love with the scowling terrorist) lends a tangy vigour to what would otherwise have been a drab prosaic and polemical tale of strife during times of mordant cynicism. Among the performers, Habib Tanvir with his emotional patriotic poetry and jovial optimism scores the highest marks, followed by Shefali Shah who furnishes a feisty positivity to her role. Anil Kapoor, last seen donning the buffoon's mask in Welcome, does a complete somersault. His character of a supremely secular Hindu devoting himself to teaching Urdu is wildly idealistic. Anil plays Mathur at a high pitch. As for debutant Anurag Sinha, in the central role of the closet-terrorist he wears the sullen scowl as a 'passion' statement from first frame to last. To see what else he's capable of, we shall have to wait another Friday.

"Shaurya is commercial but not frivolous" - Minissha Lamba

Click above for more stills "Just because Shaurya isn't frivolous doesn't make it any less commercial", debates Minissha Lamba as she gears up for the release of a big film of hers after a gap of more than one year. Last film of hers to arrive at the theaters was Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd (Feb 2007). In between she was seen in small appearances in Heyy Babyy (special appearance in the title song) and Dus Kahaniyaan (for the story 'Pooranmashi') too. "Sometimes we tend to create a misconception without any reason around the subject and treatment of a film. Just because Shaurya is based on an Army court case doesn't signify by any means that it would be a dry story to be told", explains Minissha, "The film has great elements of intrigue and drama with finding out the real truth as the underlining stream which runs throughout the narrative." What was it about Shaurya which made her agree to do the film? After all it seems to be a male dominated drama with actors like Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Javed Jaffrey and Deepak Dobriyal holding the center stage. Didn't she feel she would loose out screen space amongst so many other actors? "On the contrary, I was thrilled with this kind of opportunity", says the pretty girl who made a smashing debut with Yahaan around 3 years back, "In fact, I agree that even my part could have been a male character in the film. But director Samar Khan's point of view was that a female actor here would add certain softness to the character. There is this vulnerability angle which comes in that only adds an altogether different dimension." So what exactly does she do in the film? From playing a super girl in Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, she wouldn't be setting down for anything lesser, isn't it? Laughs Minissha, "No, it definitely isn't close to any fantasy character. Instead, it is as real as it gets as I play an investigative journalist who stumbles across a case which is almost dead and buried." Getting serious, she adds, "While everyone around her feels that this case should die, it is my character which wants to find answers to all the questions which no one wants to remember or talk about. Yes, for her too it starts off as a story which she wants to do for professional reasons; of course she is ambitious and wants to prove a point. However, as the film moves ahead, it becomes a matter of personal issue for her as she wants the justice to be done at all cost." "Shaurya is a story which had to be told. Sometimes we have to make movies which are commercial and yet aspire to drive home a message. A message that instead of taking it lying down, one should be courageous enough to fight for the right cause and get the truth out in open. And yes, all this can be done cinematically through an entertaining manner as well", signs off Minissha.

Celebrating women who deserved better

In Balu Mahendra's Sadma and Shashilal Nair's Grahan, Sridevi and Manisha Koirala played women who surrendered to the male presence almost regressing to being a child. In this era of women being in-charge, it's difficult to come across women who lose themselves into the feeling of gender-free surrender without feeling like the weaker sex. Oh, how we love to watch women weep on the floor and dance on the rooftop. But what about women of substance….do we ever embrace them without fear? And do filmmakers ever take to them without a backward glance at how the male members of the audiences react to their assertive women? In Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate, for instance, Bipasha Basu got into an executive suit and played the male game in the corporate world .Finally, though she ended up taking the rap for her man and goes to jail to save his (cowardly) skin. An instant and immediate hark- back to Nutan in Bandini, 45 years earlier when the actress goes to jail for love. Of course Nutan wore a crumpled saree, not a chic suit. Bandini was no chic flick. But under the apparent apparel has the leading lady really changed? The woman of substance seems to have drowned in acres of skin show. What would Nutan think of her niece Tanisha romping around with nothing much on except the I-pod in Neal & Nikki? Who was the last truly dignified woman we saw on screen? Nostalgia isn't the only reason why we find women from the past so appealing. Nargis in Mother India and Meena Kumari in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam were removed from one another by almost a generation. And yet they were equally enchanting portrayals of the Indian woman in all her splendor. In the 1980s Shabana Azmi did a series of films about contemporary women. Among them Mahesh Bhatt's Arth, the modern but maudlin saga of a deserted wife, made the maximum impact. Not men but women repeatedly saw Arth and made it a hit. Shabana's another bravura effort at portraying a deserted wife in Pravin Bhatt (Vikram's father)'s Bhavna went unnoticed. She becomes a call girl to bring up her son…the archetypal Fallen Woman rising to become Mother India….Cut to Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag where Rani Mukherjee becomes a whore to support her family. Both the films were rejected by the audience. Fallen Women are in for a fall. Gradually, in the 1990s female-oriented cinema lost its sheen. Outstanding film about the Indian woman's sexuality such as Aruna Raje's Rihaee, Ketan Mehta's Mirch Masala, Shyam Benegal's Zubeida and Madhur Bhandarkar's Satta bombed. Only Yash Chopra's Chandni and Bhandarkar's Chandni Bar clicked. When was the last time you saw a female oriented film doing well?

Demonstrations done against Nana Patekar in MP; Nana upset

Nana Patekar's closeness with MNS leader Raj Thackeray has landed him in a soup. The fiery actor signed a petition to protest the gag order imposed by the state on the politician. Some other prominent Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Sunil Shetty, Sajid Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala had also supported the campaign started by MNS workers earlier this week to ensure that their leader Raj Thackeray gets back his freedom of speech. However, things took a nasty turn when Bharatiya Janashakti President Uma Bharti retaliated and asked the Bollywood actors to apologize for supporting Raj Thackeray. She even threatened that films starring actors like Nana Patekar and Salman Khan would be banned in the state of Madhya Pradesh. In fact, Uma Bharti even joined a group of demonstrators in destroying the effigies of Raj Thackeray, Nana Patekar and Salman Khan. The protestors were seen beating the effigies with slippers before burning them. Nana had earlier given an interview on a popular news channel where he expressed his opinion on issue raised by Raj Thackeray. Later, yesterday (Mar 6) evening, Nana Patekar appeared on the same news channel and expressed his disappointment at the way people in MP had reacted towards his views.

Hrithik to shoot his item number for Krazzy 4 tomorrow

Rakesh Roshan's Krazzy 4 starring Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon in lead roles is all set to hit theatres on April 11 . The film, directed by debutant director Jaideep Sen, is already creating a lot of positive buzz, especially the 'Break Free' item number filmed on none other than Shah Rukh Khan. As it is common news by now that even Hrithik Roshan is all set to do an item number on the same song and yes the D- Day has finally arrived when the actor gets into his dancing boots. Bollywood Hungama got in touch with Rakesh Roshan who gave all the details regarding the song, "Yes, Hrithik is shooting for the song from tomorrow (Mar 8). However, the wordings of the two songs are quite different. While Shah Rukh's version would be featured in the film, Hrithik's song would be used for promotional purposes and in the end credits" Interestingly, while Ahmed Khan made SRK dance to his tunes in the item number, Ganesh Acharya would be choreographing Hrithik's version of the song. Looks like the two songs are indeed a case of being 'Same Same But Different'. We also decided to get the facts straight from Roshan Sr. on the film to be directed by Anurag Basu for his banner, " Yes, we have finally signed (international actress) Barbara Mori and Kangana opposite Hrithik. The film is titled Kites and Rajesh Roshan would be composing the music. The film should start rolling by July end (2008) and should release around June 2009."

SRK, Preity plan music videos for their IPL teams

With the Great Indian victory down under, cricket is surely the flavor of the season. While India’s next series is the three Test series against the South Africans at home, fans are actually looking forward to the grand launch of probably cricket’s biggest event, the prestigious IPL (Indian Premiere League) which kicks off from April 18th. Adding glamour to the cricketing action would be the presence of Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta who own the franchise of the Kolkata and Mohali teams respectively. Needless to say both Khan and Zinta are leaving no stone unturned to get maximum publicity for their teams. The latest news doing the rounds is that SRK has roped in good friend Ganesh Hegde to choreograph and direct a music video for his Kolkata team. A source, close to Hegde, confirmed the news, “Yes, Ganesh is doing the music video for SRK. We can’t reveal much about the video.” When asked if it would feature King Khan, the source remained tight-lipped but later hinted, “Aggar unka video hai to woh to honge hi na…” For those who came in late, music director duo Vishal-Shekhar who composed the music for SRK’s hit film Om Shanti Om have apparently composed the music for this video. Meanwhile, the buzz is that Preity Zinta has apparently signed music director duo Sajid-Wajid to compose a song for her Mohali team. The song has been recorded by Bhangra King Daler Mehndi. Well with such big names getting involved in the inaugural edition of the IPL, things are only gonna get hotter in the days to come.
