First Look at Sexy Lady

With an array of films popping its head from everywhere, Bollywood this year is the place to be and a space to watch out for! With the exams settling in and vacations bustling in, the coming few weeks will see a race for the top slot. And leading the race is none other than the Abbas-Mustan's directorial Race, which has simply taken the human mind with suspense, action and thrills by the core. Even though the film is just a few weeks away, still, it's producers Tips and composer Pritam are leaving no stones unturned to ensure that the film not just stays in news but also takes one of the biggest ever openings at the B-O. To keep the film hot in circulation and in order to add on to the immense hype that this action/thriller has already been generating, the makers have decided to include a new song in Race. The song is special since it features Saif Ali Khan and the 'hot-n-happening' Katrina Kaif who was the only leading lady to have enjoyed a cent percent record last year (Namastey London, Apne, Partner and Welcome). Moreover, the title of the song is nothing less than inviting as it reads - 'Sexy Lady'. As per the film's producer Ramesh Taurani (of TIPS), the song was added as it was found to be a good replacement for 'Mujhpe To Jaado' which was yet to be shot. "We are thrilled with the great response to the title song 'Race Sanson Ki', 'Pehli Nazar Mein' and 'Zara Zara Touch Me'. We wanted to keep the momentum going. When Pritam made us hear the tune of 'Sexy Lady', we knew that this was the song for the film," confirms Ramesh Taurani. With the Sexy lady (Katrina) marking her presence in Race, it becomes needless to say that the makers of Race and Tips Music can teach us how to keep pace and score an ace!

''I chose Ranbir because I see that special spark in him'' - Raj Kumar Santoshi

For now it's goodbye Ajay Devgan, hello Ranbir Kapoor for Raj Kumar Santoshi. Post the unexpected debacle of Halla Bol producers are no longer eager for more from the Devgan-Santoshi pair. Apparently PVR the producers who were supposed to support Santoshi's multi-crore historical on the life of Emperor Ashok have backed out of the project. Santoshi who has been long toying with the idea of making a love story has now signed Bollywood's new sensation Ranbir for a film. And he has decided to cast Katrina Kaif in the female lead. He starts the project immediately. Confirming this new development in his career Raj Kumar Santoshi says, "Yes I'm making this film, Ranbir is confirmed. Katrina is nearly confirmed. I wanted to work with Ranbir the minute I saw him in Saawariya. I see that special spark in him. In fact after I saw him in Saawariya I sent him a bouquet, I was so impressed by him." The film is to be produced by Tips with whom Santoshi had a long-standing tiff regarding outstanding payments for The Legend Of Bhagat Singh. Santoshi denies any differences with Tips. "We had a very fruitful working relationship during The…Bhagat Singh. If we didn't why would we be working together again?" Santoshi is specially excited about this project because it's a love story that he's writing himself. "For very long now I wanted to make a pure love story. I've written this script some time back. I was waiting for the right face. I think Ranbir was destined to be the hero in my love story." Interestingly two years ago Santoshi was supposed to make a film called Ranbir with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan.

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor and actress Sridevi are to be honored with the ‘FICCI Living Legend in Entertainment’ award during the annual convention FICCI Frames 2008, that’s to be held from March 25 to March 27 in Mumbai. Rishi Kapoor (son of the great Raj Kapoor and grandson of the legendary Prithiviraj Kapoor) made his acting debut as a child artist in Mera Naam Joker. His first film as a lead actor was the smash-hit Bobby in 1973 opposite Dimple Kapadia. Some of his other popular works include Karz, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, Saagar, Kabhi Kabhi, Deewana, Damini and Bol Radha Bol. In the recent past he was seen in supporting roles in films like Fanaa, Hum Tum and Namastey London. Last year (2007) was a special year for him as his son Ranbir Kapoor made his debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. In fact Rishi was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the recently held 53rd Annual Filmfare Awards in Mumbai. Sridevi on the other hand has been acting from a very small age in films of various languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. The pair (Rishi & Sridevi) who starred together in the super-hit Chandni will be presented with the award on the last day of the convention. Last year this very award was presented to two superstars Kamal Hassan and Rekha.

"Jannat music would go down as a classic" - Emraan Hashmi

Click above for more stills "If you thought that the music of Gangster and Awarapan were great, look out for Jannat. It is out of this world and simply phenomenal,” declares Emraan Hashmi who would be seeing a film of his arriving at theaters after almost a year. Though 2006 saw Good Boy Bad Boy, The Train and Awarapan releasing one after another, it has been a sort of wait for Emraan Hashmi in 2008, as Jannat would be arriving only in the month of May. "We want the music as well as the film to be promoted to an optimum degree,” says Emraan who is actively involved in the functioning and progress of Bhatt brothers' Vishesh Films. "Awarapan experience has taught that much more time should be given to the promotion of music. It is nice to see that songs like 'Maahiya', 'Tera Mera Rishta' and 'To Phir Aayo' are so popular today. I guess they were still growing up with people when the film got released." So, what does the action plan seem for Jannat. "We would go all out to make sure that the music of Jannat is heard by everyone. Liking or not liking it is audience's prerogative though let me tell you that I am 200% sure about the music becoming a big success. We want the music to hit the peak and then run for at least a fortnight before the film arrives. I have great confidence in the tunes that Pritam has created,” reflects Emraan Hashmi. "So many times we see a soundtrack being considered as good but within the realms of Bollywood scheme of things even as it reaches a blockbuster status. It is only after a few years that it becomes a catalogue album, which registers sales consistently for over the years and is termed as a classic. It has happened in the past and you would see that happening again. And Jannat would be one such soundtrack which would go down as a classic", declares Emraan who is one of those select few actors who has at least a couple of chartbuster tracks in most of his films. What does the soundtrack comprise of? "There are around 6 songs in the movie with number of added remixes. Which one is my favorite? Difficult to choose as of now! I guess let audiences decide it for themselves. It isn't an easy task to create a score for a film like this which tells the story of a man who is a street side gambler and turns into a bookie operating at an international platform. I guess the music and lyrics pretty much compliment the protagonist's exciting journey in his quest of Jannat, as he gets sucked deeper and deeper into the world of cricket and the nexus associated with it," informs Emraan. When contacted, Pritam said modestly, "I am happy that people at Vishesh Films are so confident with the way music of Jannat has turned out to be." He concludes with a smile, "Yes, the songs are good here but let me not sound overtly excited in a similar way. I would wait for the audience to give their final verdict."

Top Ten albums of the week

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 1 Race As the film gears up for it's 21st March release, it is quite obvious that 'Race' would continue to reign from the top. If three chartbuster tracks in a row – 'Race Sanson Ki', 'Pehli Nazar Mein' and 'Zara Zara' - were not enough, 'Sexy Lady' is a new number which is being added to the soundtrack. Expect the new edition of the album to arrive soon! None. The music not just compliments the film's genre but also throws a surprise or two. 2 4 Jodhaa Akbar Slow but steady, 'Jodhaa Akbar' moves up the charts as the film completes a two week run at the box office. With the film sustaining itself at theaters, the music has benefited too, as apparent from a two spot jump into the charts. In Top-3 now, it would be interesting to see if this Rahman soundtrack would have enough ammunition to challenge 'Race' for a position at the top spot. The album relies heavily on 'Azeem O Shaan Shahenshah' and 'Jashn E Bahaara' 3 3 Jab We Met 'Jab We Met' may not be winning awards for Pritam but it is certainly getting him all the rewards as the music continues to record consistent sales. It is one of the rare scenarios for a film which is simultaneously doing well at theaters, DVD circuits and satellite broadcast alike. The music too is only following suit! None 4 2 Taare Zameen Par This soundtrack would be remembered not just for years but decades to come. Established firmly as a classic, 'Taare Zameen Par' would be classified as a highlight of the career of Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy and Prasoon Joshi. None 5 5 U Me Aur Hum The way 'U Me Aur Hum' had arrived into the charts, it has seemed that in week two it would storm further up. However, challenge from the top has been tough and the result is that this Vishal Bhardwaj score has remained stable within Top-5. While 'Jee Le' and 'Dil Dhakda' have already been popular, 'Saiyaan' should only be following suit! Ajay Devgan and Kajol in a hardcore romantic entertainer is not everyone's idea which could have it's effect on perception created for the film's music 6 6 Om Shanti Om There isn't any change for the positioning of 'Om Shanti Om' in the charts. Yet again, awards are eluding this 'masala' soundtrack by Vishal and Shekhar but that may not really be a matter of concern for T-Series, Shah Rukh Khan or Farah Khan since in terms of popularity, it was right at the top in 2007. With 2008 too embracing the music of 'Om Shanti Om', the celebrations continue. None 7 8 Welcome Showing a jump in the charts by a solitary spot, 'Welcome' continues to hang on. On an absolute scale, sales at lower down the charts aren't phenomenal but due to lack of any competition, 'Welcome' still finds a place in the charts.. 'Jo bikta hai who achcha hai' – what else can one comment around 'Welcome', the music of which has been a surprise success 8 New Black & White After 'Apna Sapna Money Money', finally there is music from a film by Subhash Ghai enters the charts, Otherwise 'Good Boy Bad Boy', 'Khanna & Iyer' and 'Bombay To Bangkok' have all proved to be disastrous musically. In comparison Sukhwinder Singh has managed to churn a tune or two which do work well with the film's context. Overall the music is quite disappointing with only 'Peer Manavan' and 'Main Chala' working to an extent. Subhash Ghai films have boasted of much better music in the past! 9 7 Sunday Seeing a drop by a couple of spots, the music of 'Sunday' is on it's way out. The album has seen some of the most massive swings in the charts since it's arrival. Whether it was it's move or down, 'Sunday' has typically been erratic in it's sales. Even though 'Sunday' boasts of good music, surprisingly the music company is not continuing to publicize it at all. The promotion has come to an abrupt end ever since the film completed it's box office run. 10 9 Goal Entry of 'Black & White' into the charts means that 'Goal' has moved down by a spot. Still, it seems safe in it's position at the bottom of the barrel till 'One Two Three' or soon to be released 'Jannat' push it out completely. Wish the theme song of the album would have created a name for itself too amongst the audience! Source: Music Festival, MGF Mall

''Yes I've opted out of Teen Patti'' - Arshad Warsi

Arshad Warsi is one sad man these days. "I was so looking forward to working with Mr. Bachchan again after Zamaanat. But it's not destined to be, at least not right now," laments Arshad after having to opt out of their only film together. "I've no choice but to leave Teen Patti. I was looking forward to it because it was with Amitji, and also because it was my first film with a female director. But my dates for Teen Patti are now clashing with my own production which I start in July. If it was just one more assignment I'd have happily swapped it with Teen Patti. But I am turning producer and it's a big leap for my career. I've all the pre-production in place. And any delay would be fatal for my plans as a producer." Arshad however needs to clear the air with Mr. Bachchan. "I need to explain to him why I'm not doing Teen Patti before people go to him with all kinds of mad implications. I want him to know I'd give anything to be in the same film with him. In fact, I want to produce a film that features the both of us."

`Salaam-e-Ishq` to be released as six films!

In what will decidedly qualify as a first ever experiment in cinema, Nikhil Advani`s segmented love saga “Salaam-e-Ishq” will now be divided into six separate stories, with each plot treated as an individual, self-contained film. This more viewer-friendly version of the episodic film will conclusively illustrate the fact that the fragmented format doesn`t work in India.

"Sarkar Raaj is not being re-shot" - Ram Gopal Varma

Ram Gopal Varma had created a coup of sorts by casting the father-son jodi (Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek) in Sarkar, a film that left people awestruck, all thanks to the power-full performances by the Bachchans. This time round, Ramu has gone one-step ahead to add one more member (Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan) from the Bachchan clan and have named it Sarkar Raj, which happens to be a sequel to Sarkar. So now, let us hear from the director himself. When is Sarkar Raj releasing? Either in the last week of May or first week of June, depending upon the matches, exams, vacations, etc. Reports of a delay are utter nonsense. Nothing is being re-shot. If I needed to do it, I would. But that isn't the case with Sarkar Raj. All of us—Amitji, Abhishek, Aishwarya and I are happy with the product. The film has an added significance because of the formidable cast… I guess when the film stars the Bachchans, people would love to talk about the product. But they're bitching unnecessarily about Sarkar Raj. Something negative or the other is always being written about it. The fact is that post-production is on. We're ready with Sarkar Raj. Do you feel that Sarkar Raj has gone beyond Sarkar? In terms of scale, scope, and span, it goes far beyond the first film. Also it is my first film with a socio-political subtext. And it's character-driven. If you take the Godfather trilogy, they're all character dramas. Sarkar Raj isn't exactly a sequel to Sarkar. In the sense, that it doesn't take off right away from where the first movie trails off. So how would you describe it? For the want of a better description, I'd say that Sarkar Raj takes us into another episode… in the adventures of the Nagare family’s life. The plots and issues involved make this a far bigger film than the first one. Do the Big B and Abhishek have more scenes together? I wouldn't say more scenes. I'd say there’re more shades to their character. In the first part, the son Shankar got very close to his father because of a crisis. By the end of Sarkar, Abhishek's character took over his father's empire. In Sarkar Raj, they already share a pre-given equation. Is Sarkar Raj inspired by events connected to the Narmada dam project? Not at all. You see, any kind film about the concerns of a family for a social cause will have protests and political agendas. But Sarkar Raj has no direct bearing to any of the headlines recently. Sarkar Raj does have political undertones. But it isn't a political drama. At the end of the day, it's about the triumph of the human spirit and a father-son relationship. What about Aishwarya? She plays a ruthless businesswoman whose only aim is to make money for her organization, whereas Shankar believes in using the financial resources for the betterment of the people. Abhishek believes in making money for the people. Aishwarya believes in making money from the people. So, Abhishek and Aishwarya are dramatically pitched against each other. An interesting relationship develops over the ideological fence. The romantic angle is secondary. Their ideological conflict is more important. Why Aishwarya? I needed a very strong actor for Anita's role. Her beauty is so much at the forefront that it makes you forget her talent. It's hard to look beyond her beauty. I took her on as a challenge. But when she emoted as Anita, I was shocked. She's a truly intense actress. She understood the nuances of Anita's character completely. I was taken aback. Her intensity matches her beauty, which says a lot. Is this Aishwarya's best performance ever? I can gauge her performance from behind the camera. Only I know how hard it was for her to give life to her character. It's easy to impress audiences with drama and crying. Aishwarya has no props to support her performance. She has brought out her character's complexities without crutches. In that sense, it's her best performance ever. Sarkar Raj is a family film on two levels. Would the presence of the Bachchans together eclipse the film's intrinsic merits? I firmly believe that once the audiences get into the theatre, the characters will take over. They won't look for the Bachchans or be disappointed by Aishwarya not being part of the family.

Ghajini director arrested, later released

Aamir Khan's much awaited remake of the south hit Ghajini has been in the news right from the time it was announced, be it for Aamir's new bald look or for his unusual pairing with relatively new heroines Asin and Jiah Khan. The film was in the news again last week after its director, A.R. Murugadoss was arrested in Chennai for alleged violation of copyright laws. Apparently, Salem Chandrashekhar, the producer of the Tamil movie Ghajini had lodged a police complaint that Murugadoss was making the Hindi remake of Ghajini without his permission. A.R. Murugadoss (who also directed the original Tamil version) was later released on a personal bond. Hope that matters between the (original) producer and director sort out soon and there are no further hiccups in the remake of Ghajini.

In Conversation: SRK's Om Shanti Om Bodyguard

As Farah Khan's 'Om Shanti Om' releases on DVD, complete with a 16-page booklet that gives an insight into the cast and crew of the movie, I caught up with one of the stars of the film: Simon Hewitt. Simon who? Shah Rukh Khan's bodyguard. That's who. Movie buffs will recall Simon as the foreign bodyguard who appeared constantly by the side of Shah Rukh's Om Kapoor character in the blockbuster. Clad in a black suit, with ever present dark glasses, the 6' 3" Australian born actor cuts an imposing figure on celluloid. At the scheduled interview location, a Mahim coffee shop, on the edge of Bombay's filmi society; the patrons excited whispers of Om Shanti Om rebounds as Hewitt enters. So how does a thirty something Australian end up in the biggest Bollywood film of all time? "I got the part through an audition" Simon narrates, "In fact I got a couple of films for SRK's production house Red Chillies in that one audition; the other being 'My Name is Anthony Gonsalves' ". Hewitt, who swapped Melbourne for Mumbai 4 years ago, states, "I knew it was a big film. The hype was huge before we had even finished it. But who could have foreseen the circus that was to come following the release". Looking back on the experience, Simon reflects, "I shot for 25 days over about 4 months. I had no idea what the film was about while I was shooting. In fact it seemed a bit silly, but of course at that stage I didn't know that it was deliberately tongue in cheek". But of the superstar himself, Simon says, "Shah Rukh seemed like a nice guy. A good mix of being both intelligent and practical. In one of the shots he fixed my sunglasses when they kept falling off my face". Along with many other fans of Khan, Simon shares the view that the star is approachable. "I felt him to be busy but not stressed". Hailing from a foreign background Hewitt accepts, "I didn't have the same awe of Shah Rukh as the other members of the film and would often sit next to him to watch the monitors". "Farah, on the other hand, used to stress me out with her microphone". The actor remembers a time when he was suddenly needed at the last minute to shoot on the 'Deewangi Deewangi' sequence. For those of you who came in late, the song that was picturised on 31 of the industry's hottest stars. However, Simon was out of town and could not be contacted. Fortunately, Farah was forgiving when she found out that Simon's date problems were the result of an outdoor shoot in Bangalore with none other than Aamir Khan. It is not everyday that an actor gets to shoot every single one of his scenes with screen idol Shah Rukh. And that with no dialogue. "25 days shooting and not a word spoken that's got to be some kind of film record" joked Simon. "Actually, the script said I was to say one word. I remember when it was time to shoot that section, Shah Rukh laughing and saying live it up, knowing it was the only word I would get to say". And Simon's last word on SRK? "The guy is pretty mellow". Steven Baker is a UK writer who divides his time between London, Delhi, and Mumbai. Best known for his writing on the Hindi film industry, his work regularly appears in a range of Indian, NRI, and international publications.
