Lenovo-Saif-Olympics together!

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar did for cycling what Chak De India did (read 'revived') for hockey, followed by Goal trying to do its bit for football. With the advent of Olympics (which is just around the corner), we feel that every single sport like will find its place (read 'due') under the sun, the corporate sun, to be precise! While the whole of Bollywood is abuzz with the Saif-Kareena romance, the're-invention' of his dude-factor, name of his lady love tattooed on his arm et al, the computer major Lenovo, which also happens to be the Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay and the top sponsor of the Olympic Games, couldn't have chosen a better timing to bring out their special edition notebooks, along with Saif being their brand ambassador. A true case of 'Make Hay While The Sun Shines'. What's more, they also plan to open the Indian auction of its Notebook PC designed on the Olympic Torch theme. They have also decided on an additional torch relay components with the same 'Cloud of Promise' theme including the lantern that will carry the flame around the world and the cauldron lit at the end of the relay day, in each city. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction will be distributed through the Lenovo Hope Fund to select philanthropies, including 'Right to Play'. In the spirit of Lenovo's sponsorship of the Olympic Games, the proceeds will be utilized to concentrate on microfinance, small and medium-enterprise development and bringing sports to communities of children. With Lenovo at the helm of things, the going is bound to be 'Saif'!

Sanjay Gupta's 'White Feather House' dream comes true

Prolific filmmaker, Sanjay Gupta has realized his long cherished dream of having a spacious office for his production company, White Feather Films. Sanjay Gupta recently brought a seven storey building at Yari Road, Versova, and aptly christened it as 'White Feather House', which will bring all the various divisions of production, equipment, administration, sound and editing, post production etc under one roof. Though, currently, Sanjay Gupta has a three floor office at Lokhandwala, the ambitious filmmaker is on an expansion mode and plans to produce a multitude of films, including a foray into art house films. In fact, industry sources say that Sanjay Gupta has done only what Yash Raj Film has successfully done before, of being an independent production house not affiliating to any corporate house. They also add that Sanjay has ambitious plans on the anvil to start his own studio in Karjat. When contacted, Sanjay confirmed that 'White Feather House' is a realization of a long cherished dream. "White Feather House is truly a fulfillment of a long cherished dream of mine to house all divisions of White Feather Films under one roof. The interiors of White Feather House will take at least nine months to finish and so we plan to shift in January next year. I am extremely thrilled because it is a realization of my long term goals for 'White Feather Films', and this will help us get to where we plan to reach," says Sanjay.

Kareena Kapoor on Vogue Cover

"When it rains, it pours" said a famous poet. The same verse can be applied to almost all the leading magazines (both fashion and film based), who seem to be unable to resist themselves from having the're-discovered' Diva of Bollywood, Madame Kareena Kapoor, the reigning queen of the raining magazine covers! The latest one to cash in on this is the Indian version of Vogue, for whom Kareena has shot some really breath-taking snaps (aren't all her snaps breath-taking?) with some of the most desirable dressings to go with the various moods of the shoot! This interview is yet another affirmation of the fact that Kareena is one person who is the same on and off screen! She is so very sweet enough to confess that she had done films in the past for money or for mere greed. She also speaks about the similarities between 'Geet'-her character in Jab We Met -and the real-life Kareena. And guess what, she also reveals the secret behind her glass-hour figure. Read all of this and more to discover the real Kareena yet again…only till yet another magazine hits the stands with the much-coveted cover-girl of all reasons and seasons: Kareena Kapoor!

DVD Review: Mithya

To be or not to be That’s the question Whether it is nobler in the mind To suffer the slings and arrows Of outrageous fortune Or by taking arms against a Sea of troubles And by opposing End them… The Shakespearean dilemma is like an incorrigible marsh that assiduously persists with humanity. Life poses two roads at many an occasion and at times; it doesn’t even allow us to make our own decisions. When nothing goes according to the plan, living may become an illusion or a Mithya. Rajat Kapoor’s flawless masterpiece, Mithya, is busy earning accolades from critics and a certain section of multiplex audience. While it’s still running in the theatres, the DVD of this gripping thriller has just been released by V One Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and marketed in USA and Canada by Rainbow Films USA Ltd. Special Features Subtitles in English DVD promos of The Train, Just Married, Bhagam Bhag and Ek Chalis Ki Last Local Music Video of Zara Zara where svelte Neha Dhupia showcases her groovy moves to the beats of an average number. Packaging the DVD of any film these days has become an art in itself. The film’s making, star interviews, director’s viewpoint and the germination of idea for the film (The fact that Mithya was conceived ten years ago with Naseeruddin Shah in the main lead would have been an interesting piece of information. Saif Ali Khan and Arshad Warsi turned down the main lead. Such vignettes would have made the audience look at the film in another light itself) would have given an added incentive to the viewer. Technical Details 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format 5.1 Dolby Digital Reasons why Mithya DVD is a must buy The range of dexterous emotions-n-expressions exhibited by Ranvir Shorey is like a Tsunami of talent that drowns you from the first frame itself and is the biggest highlight of the film. He plays VK, a struggler in the film industry hoping to make a mark in spite of the many uneven odds. The stark uneasiness of his struggle portrays the behind-the-glamorous-sets petty existence of innumerable junior artistes who are often at the receiving end of ill-tempered frustrated directors. Ironically, VK is the look-alike of underworld don Raje Bhai. The rival gang of Gawde (Naseeruddin Shah) bumps off Raje and duplicates VK in his place. Gorgeous starlet Sonam (Neha Dhupia) is Gawde’s mistress who falls for VK’s confused simplicity and guides him through the black hole of uncertainty. Memory loss, basic goodness, genuine love for Raje’s wife-n-kids as if they were his own and earning the wrath of the insensitive world by doing supposed acts of ‘correctness’ twists the perspective of VK’s life. Rafey Mahmood’s brilliant cinematography, Suresh Pai’s tight editing (the film’s less than two hour duration is a big plus) and succinct writing of Saurabh Shukla-Rajat Kapoor raise the technical standards by several notches. Of course, Kapoor’s direction stays true to the context of the film and not even once, does he compromise on the basic vision. He employs dark humour, tugs at the heart strings by portraying real situations in a miraculous matter-of-fact manner and in spite of having the overused underworld backdrop he brings a nascent freshness in the way the plot unfolds. Ranvir Shorey’s brilliance is matched by Neha Dhupia’s superbly restrained performance. Naseeruddin Shah sparkles as expected, while Vinay Pathak and Saurabh Shukla leave a solid impact. Final Verdict Mithya is a film that entertains yet stuns with its hard-hitting brutally ruthless content. It is one of the best films to have emerged out of Bollywood in the recent times. Despite being a small film, the lack of big stars doesn’t undermine its value. You may have heard it before but script is the real Hero in this edge-of-the-seat pacy flick. A good addition to your DVD collection! DVD available on V One Entertainment Rating: ***1/2

Legendary singer Mukesh's wife passes away

An 'Ira' ended when Hrithik Roshan's grandmom, the legendary music composer Roshan's wife Ira Roshan passed away a couple of years ago. And now, Roshan's best friend the late singer Mukesh's wife, Saral Mukesh, also passed away on Monday. Neil Mukesh Mathur who was very close to his grandmother was inconsolable. "I spent a lot of time with my grandmother who lived in the same building as my parents and me. While we occupy the first floor, Dadee stayed on the seventh floor. As a child, I'd look forward to weekends. Every Friday my sister and I would rush to her floor. And since there was no school on Saturday and Sunday we were allowed to sleep with her. She would tell us so many stories about my grandfather, his friendship with Raj Uncle (Raj Kapoor). I'd stare at the pictures of my grandfather and Raj Uncle and at the Filmfare trophies lined up on her shelf, hoping that one day I'd get one too. It's strange but I danced at the Filmfare award for the first time just two days before Dadee died."

'Baazigar 2' - No, 'Badshaah 2' - Yes

Sometime back, there were reports that director duo Abbas-Mustan were planning to put direction on hold temporarily, since they plan to concentrate on film production after having announced a slew of movies. The director duo has signed Rumi Jaffrey [presently directing GOD TUSSI GREAT HO], Rohit Jugraj [JAMES, SUPER STAR] and Nishikant Kamat [director of the Marathi film DOMBIVALI FAST] to direct a film each. “Sure, we're starting a string of films with Rumi, Rohit and Nishikant, but we aren't putting direction on hold. That's a rumor. As directors, we are committed to Subhash-ji [Ghai], Tips and Venus and we will direct movies, besides producing films simultaneously,” the director duo reveals. Also, brother Hussain, who edits their movies, will also turn independent director soon; his directorial debut will be produced by Abbas-Mustan of course. Meanwhile, Abbas-Mustan were planning to start sequels to BAAZIGAR and BADSHAAH. What happened to those projects? “BAAZIGAR is still fresh in the minds and frankly, we haven't found a script that lives up to the mammoth expectations. But an idea for BADSHAAH 2 has germinated and the moment the script is ready, we would approach Shah Rukh for it,” they state humbly.

DVD Review: Om Shanti Om

MOVIE DETAILS Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher Director: Farah Khan Producer: Gauri Khan Music : Vishal Shekhar Lyrics: Javed Akhtar THE FILM The film would be remembered for many reasons apart from it's high entertainment value: a) The promotional overdrive that Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan went on for weeks in advance of the release of the film. Truly, one can't remember when was the last time such vigor was seen for a movie which anyways was a guaranteed success in the making! b) The so-called clash with Saawariya, which turned out to be such a no-show. The stage was set for a battle royale but Shah Rukh Khan's mere declaration of "I will destroy 'Saawariya'" spoke of great confidence that he had in the film and Farah's capabilities. Result was an anti-climax that saw Om Shanti Om marching ahead from show one with no competition/challenge whatsoever from Saawariya. c) An amalgamation of one item sequence after another in the three-hour affair. Truly, Om Shanti OmM was a circus that had a dozen odd item sequences tying the script together and resulting in an amusing/entertaining watch. d) Filmfare awards sequence. Truly the most innovative where no star/actor complained of the spoof at their expense. e) 31 stars making an appearance for one single song and dance sequence - 'Deewangee Deewangee'. All of this added so much 'masala' to the entire sequence that one wonders how would Farah Khan get something better in her next project? f) The Manoj Kumar episode where the veteran actor was offended by the joke around his mannerisms. The incident threatened to dilute the thunder created by the film at the stands but some timely intervention by Khan and a few industry seniors saved the situation from turning out rightly ugly. g) Last but not the least, Shah Rukh Khan's six pack abs that have given business to many a body builders, instructors, dieticians and gym owners! PACKAGING The DVD currently on stands belongs to limited edition as it comes in a special cardboard case, which resembles a book. Inside the box is a two DVD case along with an autographed poster of Shah Rukh Khan in his now famous six-pack abs - straight from 'Dard E Disco'. In addition, there is a 16-page booklet, which takes a viewer through a colorful-n-eye catchy professional journey of cast and crew of the film. DURATION The film comes in a twin DVD pack with the film's duration being 162 minutes. The second DVD has special features lasting another 150 minutes. SPECIAL FEATURES - Director's Commentary - Making of OSO - Making of the songs - SRK & Farah interviews - Deleted scenes and bloopers - Promos and Trailers - Visual Effects - OSO events (Music launch, Fashion show, London premier, Book launch) - OSO Trivia Game Om Shanti Om is one of the most fulfilling, or rather THE most fulfilling DVD, when it comes to special features. Reasons are aplenty with the most exciting being 'Director's Commentary'. For films coming out of India, there are hardly many where directors do take a special effort in coming up with a commentary talking about each and every scene. Heyy Babyy and Johnny Gaddaar are the only recent examples one can recollect. In addition, coming up with a commentary is challenging too since special consideration is required to retain viewer's attention. In this context, Farah deserves full marks as she not thoroughly entertains a listener while not mincing words when it comes to making fun/light of most of the situations and actors in the film. She talks about number of things that either had gone wrong or could have gone wrong during filming of a particular scene. And she does all of it from her bedroom as she speaks while taking rest as she was 7 months pregnant when her commentary was recorded. Here are some of the highlights of the commentary: a) She doesn't refrain from announcing once again that her is a filmy-filmy film and the intent was to go all out in making a commercial film rather than trying to be arty or pseudo. b) How Shah Rukh Khan was challenged to utter his dialogues from DDLJ and Don while being in the same get up and hair as that of Rishi Kapoor from Karz (the opening scene of the film). c) How Manoj Kumar's episode had threatened to turn ugly. d) There is an obvious dig at Vidhu Vinod Chopra (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) when Farah announces that all protests against Shah Rukh Khan coming out of water with just his jeans on was hardly justified as those few seconds were far more entertaining than the other film makers' entire film. e) How Arjun Rampal's wig gave her sleep less nights. f) Introduction/references of close to 50 odd crew members who were in front of the camera acting at some point or other in Om Shanti Om g) There is a word of appreciation for newcomer Uvika Chaudhary too as Farah believes that she has some way to go if she chooses her projects carefully. She goes to the extent of calling her a mix of Dia Mirza and Amisha Patel h) How the main hall in the studio indoors, which was later burnt in the film, was inspired by Phantom Of The Opera i) She clears the air around inspiration of famous Akshay Kumar 'Return of Khiladi' sequence which was reportedly plagiarized j) Shirish Kunder's idea around showing Shah Rukh Khan walking back into his own memory in the second half of the film ....and many more! The 'Making of OSO' intelligently refrains from back-patting and instead takes a viewer through the actual behind the scenes footage and what went into getting the right sets, costumes, make up, lighting dance moves etc. in place. The prime cast of the movie along with cinematographer Manikanandan, art director Sabu Cyril, costume designers Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra & Sanjiv Mulchandani take a viewer through their journey of making Om Shanti Om a complete 70's and today's package. 'Making of the songs' is an extensive view as well as Vishal & Shekhar along with Farah Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and others explain majority of songs from the film. One interesting factor, which is highlighted, is around the placement of film's most romantic number 'Aankhon Mein Teri'. It is revealed that originally, the song wasn't in the film at all but later Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan were so impressed by this new tune which Vishal & Shekhar created that they decided to incorporate the song as a part of the film's background score. 'Deleted scenes' are always the most awaited section of a DVD and here too there are many in abundance. Though a couple of them seem quite justified to be chopped off the final cut (the ones featuring Shah Rukh and Shreyas and later Shah Rukh and Kirron), there are at least two sequences that deserved to be a part of the footage. The funniest of the lot is the one where Shah Rukh in his superstar avatar is shown throwing starry tantrums by first coming late on the sets and then refusing to begin shooting on time. Also the pre-Filmfare awards sequence had many other actors and technicians talking about super star 'Om'. Wish each of these were refrained, especially the one where Vidhu Vinod Chopra turned really catty. What did he say? See it on DVD! There is a chapter on VFX too where good detailing is given around how Deepika's portions were interspersed with Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra for the 'Dhoom Taana' sequence. Interesting. Though there are number of major events covered in the DVD - Music launch, Fashion show, London premier, Book launch - the one, which impresses most, is the London premier. If one has heard and read about mass hysteria for Shah Rukh Khan, this is the opportunity to see how it actually happens when he interacts with his fans. It is unbelievable to see the way crowds literally going berserk in their attempt to be with the star. What touches most is the way Khan not just waves and blows kisses with them but also breaks barrier to kiss and hug them. For those who wish to check their 'Om Shanti Om' gyan, there is also an online trivia game comprising of 21 questions. And mind it, they are not one of those basic - 'What was the name of Arjun Rampal's character in OSO' kind of questions? Instead they get on really challenging. Sample this - "What was the name of Shah Rukh's on-screen character which was 'Mohabbat Man' for the rest of the world?" However, we are yet to come to the best. And that segment is the one where Cyrus Broacha interviews Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan, Arjun Rampal and Deepika Padukone. Instead of a routine Q&A session, this one is a holds-no-bar fun conversation where Cyrus turns out to be the butt of everyone's joke. Watch Shah Rukh and the rest dressing him up in 70's costumes and coming up with one liners and numerous below the belt jokes, all at his expense! TECHNICAL DETAILS - 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format - Subtitles In English - Dolby Digital 5.1 and Stereo - Mastered from High Definition (HD) PRICE Rs. 499 CONCLUSION Everyone knows what Om Shanti Om is all about. It is an unabashed take on entertainment, which is on your face, at places over-the-top and doesn't shy away from taking a dig on itself, Bollywood films and industry in general - all in good humor of course. It is this spoofy treatment to the film, which truly made 'Om Shanti Om' the 'Highest Bollywood Box Office Grosser Ever'. Of course, this pretty much mandates that the film finds an entry pronto in one's DVD collection. Rating: ****

Bhandarkar shoots 19 hours a day; falls ill

Madhur Bhandarkar has fallen ill due to severe exhaustion and stress. This comes as a result of non-stop shooting schedule of Fashion which has taken its toll on the filmmaker's body. Shooting for the film has been on for close to two months now and the last few days have been quite strenuous for everyone involved with the film since Bhandarkar has been shooting for 19-20 hours a day. "That's ok, it happens. There are tough days like this in every profession, be it the world of films or anywhere else. All the actors and the crew are quite passionate about the film and understand that hard work is only making Fashion a special film", says Madhur while trying to get a point across that he won't let his ill health get on top of him. "Kya faayda zyaada sochne ka, usse sabka morale down hota hai (There is no use thinking much about ill health or otherwise, it unnecessarily gets the morale down of the cast and crew). Better way out would be to carry on with your work", says Madhur with a wry smile. But isn't he thinking about taking a couple of days off at least? Since he is the co-producer of the film as well along with UTV, he can take that much liberty at the least isn't it? "Arrey, that's not the issue. But the fact is that there are so many combination dates involved. Current shooting schedule involves each of the three ladies i.e. Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Mughda Godse. A minor slip from my end would make everyone's dates go haywire. Moreover, the current schedule has to be wrapped up fast since Priyanka would be off to Miami soon for the shoot of Dostana while Kangana too would be required for Raaz 2 which is coming on floors", divulges Madhur. What are the plans for the remaining part of the shoot? "We should be wrapping up what we are currently working on by March beginning. We resume again in the month of May." What happens in the meanwhile? "There is no breather yaar. From the sets it would be back to the editing room. Me and my technical crew would utilize this month or so to edit the portions we have shot and work on other post production areas", informs the film makers. Looks like Madhur Bhandarkar's spirit would knock off the stress and ill health would soon be history all by itself. Best of luck.

"I knew Cate wouldn’t get the Oscar " - Shekhar Kapoor

Shekhar Kapoor, currently into pre-production of Paani, his first Hindi film since The Bandit Queen in 14 years, wasn't the least surprised by the Oscars announcement on Monday. His film The Golden Age won the Oscar for Best Costumes. Shekhar played a big hand in how Cate Blanchett was dressed. "I participate in every department of my cinema, costumes included. Otherwise I wouldn't be making films," says Shekhar. "That Alexandra Byrne won an Oscar for the costumes is not a surprise at all. It's a richly-deserved award. Doing the costumes of Elizabeth and now the sequel The Golden Age isn’t the same thing as doing the clothes for contemporary dramas. Clothes are as much a character in Elizabeth as in Jodhaa Akbar, if you know what I mean," says Shekhar. "In the first Elizabeth film Cate Blanchett's clothes expressed innocence and love and vulnerability. In The Golden Age the costumes had to take her from mortal to divine. The clothes were all part of a design that took the character to divinity. We even saw her in a night dress. There she had almost become a spirit." About Cate Blanchett missing out on the Oscar for best actress Shekhar says, "I was a lot more disappointed when she didn't get it for the first part in 1998. This time I had a feeling Cate wouldn't get it. For a performance to be Oscar-worthy it has to be a lot more “in your face”, like what Cate did by cross-dressing in I'm Not There for which she was nominated in the Best Supporting-Actress category. When there are subtle nuances in the performance (like Cate's in The Golden Age) the jury doesn’t have the time to see it." He expands on the pressures put on the jury. “The jury members have lots of films to see. And they're an aged lot. So, they look for overt signs of brilliance, like a physical disability. Very often the Oscar isn't going to the performance; it's going to the character. Personally, I felt Cate Blanchett had a far more complicated character to play in the sequel," At the moment Shekhar is location hunting for Paani. "I'm seriously into pre-production. I'm going around Mumbai taking shots of buildings and locations. There won't be any stars. Only newcomers in Paani."

Sanjay Bhansali has a unique birthday in Paris

"The biggest birthday gift is the opera Padmavati. I came here to Paris expecting to work really hard on a discipline that I had never dabbled in before. But I didn't know it would be so much fun. The French actors and the team were all fully prepared for my arrival. Once I arrived in Paris, I just had to fall into rhythm with them. I'm having the time of my life," said Sanjay Bhansali on Sunday from Paris. It was his birthday and he missed his mom and close friends. "But my opera team just wouldn't let me get lonely. At midnight, they wheeled in a cake on a palki and sang Happy Birthday for me. I'd have been embarrassed if I wasn't so happy to have people in this foreign country to make me feel at home on my birthday. Otherwise my birthdays are always like any other day." Sanjay was supposed to fly back to Mumbai to be home for his birthday. "But that seemed impractical. If I left the opera at this time the entire rhythm would've been broken. To watch these actors and team-members give so much of themselves to Padmavati is very inspiring. I always wanted to do theatre. I never thought I'd enjoy the process of doing opera so much. To watch these magnificent singers hold a note for so long without getting breathless, to have them recreate the whole legend of Padmavati is a process of creation that has completely rejuvenated me. I've never felt more calm and alive as an artiste." The opera goes on stage in the next two weeks. "I'm supposed to be physically present for the first two shows. Then after that when the opera goes to other countries, I'll be joining the repertory to start them off in the new atmosphere." So what did he actually do on his birthday? "You mean besides work? Calls and messages from friends and relatives back home started early. I attended my costume designer, Rajesh Pratap Singh's, pageant at the Fashion Week. Then I walked along the Seine, and just spent time with myself in my apartment here in Paris. In Mumbai, I don't get much time to do that. And for a slice of home, I've Omung Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh to do the sets and clothes for the opera. I had never worked with choreographer Tanushree Shankar. Like everyone else involved with Padmavati, she has just fitted into the whole opera perfectly. Nothing about this opera seems out of place." Finally, the rumors of marriage with choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant...Sanjay sigh. "I hear some journalists back home have decided to get us married off. Love and the decision to get married are very private matters. If ever there's marriage on cards I'll let everyone know. For now there're no such plans."
