"The biggest birthday gift is the opera Padmavati. I came here to Paris expecting to work really hard on a discipline that I had never dabbled in
before. But I didn't know it would be so much fun. The French actors and the team were all fully prepared for my arrival. Once I arrived in Paris, I just
had to fall into rhythm with them. I'm having the time of my life," said Sanjay Bhansali on Sunday from Paris.
It was his birthday and he missed his mom and close friends. "But my opera team just wouldn't let me get lonely. At midnight, they wheeled in a cake
on a palki and sang Happy Birthday for me. I'd have been embarrassed if I wasn't so happy to have people in this foreign country to make me feel at
home on my birthday. Otherwise my birthdays are always like any other day." Sanjay was supposed to fly back to Mumbai to be home for his
birthday. "But that seemed impractical. If I left the opera at this time the entire rhythm would've been broken. To watch these actors and
team-members give so much of themselves to Padmavati is very inspiring. I always wanted to do theatre. I never thought I'd enjoy the process
of doing opera so much. To watch these magnificent singers hold a note for so long without getting breathless, to have them recreate the whole
legend of Padmavati is a process of creation that has completely rejuvenated me. I've never felt more calm and alive as an artiste."
The opera goes on stage in the next two weeks. "I'm supposed to be physically present for the first two shows. Then after that when the opera goes
to other countries, I'll be joining the repertory to start them off in the new atmosphere." So what did he actually do on his birthday? "You mean
besides work? Calls and messages from friends and relatives back home started early. I attended my costume designer, Rajesh Pratap Singh's,
pageant at the Fashion Week. Then I walked along the Seine, and just spent time with myself in my apartment here in Paris. In Mumbai, I don't get
much time to do that. And for a slice of home, I've Omung Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh to do the sets and clothes for the opera. I had never
worked with choreographer Tanushree Shankar. Like everyone else involved with Padmavati, she has just fitted into the whole opera perfectly.
Nothing about this opera seems out of place."
Finally, the rumors of marriage with choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant...Sanjay sigh. "I hear some journalists back home have decided to get us
married off. Love and the decision to get married are very private matters. If ever there's marriage on cards I'll let everyone know. For now there're no
such plans." Source: Indiafm.com Features | 25 Feb 2008 | 3:00 pm
They composed the music for one of the biggest hits of 2007, Chak De India. The film's title track went on to become the National Sports Anthem. This was followed by the melodious tracks of Madhuri's comeback vehicle, Aaja Nachle. But now, Salim-Sulaiman get ready for their biggest challenge as they have been chosen by Aditya Chopra to compose the music for his next directorial venture, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. We spoke with Salim Merchant to know more about the film's music.
Is it true that Aditya Chopra has signed you up to compose the music for his directorial film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?
Yes, that is very true. We (Salim-Sulaiman) are composing the music for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. We are very excited about the project, and hope to do our best.
From the title, it seems that the film is romantic. What is the brief given to you for the film?
You know how a Yash Raj Film works; they love to keep it in wraps until its time to finally let it out. Although I know the story, I can barely tell you anything. Once ready, they will announce the film on a very grand scale.
Aditya Chopra is returning back to direction after a span of nearly eight yrs. His past films had record-breaking music. Don't you think, there's major responsibility on your shoulders?
Well, we work for the film, there's nothing big or small. It's the film, which matters and appeals, not the director. We would have been excited and anxious about the music otherwise also. But I must agree, Aditya is a very good director and it would be a great experience working with him. We will try to do our best with the music for the film.
Jatin-Lalit have been Aditya's favorite in the past. What is your opinion on their compositions?
Their compositions have been great. They have been in this field for a very long time and successfully given some amazing hits. And times are changing; we cannot call ourselves successful considering we have just begun.
Will you also be doing the background score?
We had begun our career with background scores and we would never give up that at any point of time. Yes of course, we are doing the background score. And when you talk of that, it is a big responsibility, we have just begun getting in compositions and have a long way to go. We have been very fortunate that our songs have been appreciated.
What kind of response did you get for Chak De India and Aaja Nachle?
Well, that I should ask you; I do not want to praise ourselves. It does not make any sense like that. Nevertheless, yaah, it feels great when the song was taken as the national sports anthem but I must add that it was the film that made it like that. The film was a hit and that is why the song was loved so much.
Since the award season has begun, do you expect trophies coming your way this year?
We do not expect anything, because that's not the intention with which we make music. Our prime motive is to make music for the film and then the audience. But I must agree that all these awards work as a morale booster and do a great job of encouraging us. But the ultimate pleasure is when it works for the film.
So what was the biggest compliment you received for your songs?
Well, the Chak De song becoming the sports anthem itself is a big compliment but what really touched our hearts is when music lovers like A.R. Rahman and Shankar Mahadevan praised our work. They complimented our song, 'Yeh Honsla' from Dor and 'Maula Mere' from Chak De India and said that it was a very different song. And when Zakir Husain, who is like my guru, praises our music, it's a different feeling altogether. There's no bigger compliment than that. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 25 Feb 2008 | 1:39 pm

Before we knew it Nikhil Advani has gone and completed an animation film about five animals from the jungle seeking an audience with politicians in Delhi. The film's title is Ab Dilli Door Nahin. Just one hitch. The title belongs to R.K. Films.
In 1957, the illustrious Raj Kapoor produced an experimental film called Ab Dilli Door Nahin about a young boy from a far-off village journeying to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The film came and bombed. But Nikhil feels it's the correct title for his film. "My animation film is about a five animals heading for Delhi to meet the politicians there. I can't think of a better title than Ab Dilli Door Nahin. But the title is with R.K. Films. I've requested them to part with it. They haven't gotten back to me. But I'm sure they will. I hope I'll be able to use the title. Because I've no second option."
Nikhil hopes to dedicate Ab Dilli Door Nahin to his adopted baby girl. "I hope she'll be old enough to enjoy the film when it's released." The director is trying to spend as much time as possible with his baby girl before he leaves for China early next week for four months at a stretch. "But I've made sure they join me there." Race
It's a single horse race at the top. With an otherwise lean season at the music
stands, the only album which continues to sell by the dozens across the country is 'Race'. Guess hardcore commercial score like 'Race' is going to
stay on for long!
It's high time that a new song comes on air, otherwise title song and 'Zara Zara' risk
becoming stale by the time the film releases on 21st March

Taare Zameen Par
Shankar Ehsaan Loy may have lost out on getting awards for their soundtrack of
'Taare Zameen Par' but Prasoon Joshi is hardly missing out any for his lyrics from the film. This one is a catalogue album which would continue to
sell for years and years to come.

Jab We Met
An album for all seasons, 'Jab We Met' has everything for a lonely heart ('Tum Se
Hi', 'Aaoge Jab'), celebration, ('Nagada, 'Mauja Hi Mauja'), fun ('Yeh Ishq Hai') or someone truly in love ('Aao Milo Chale'). One of the most complete
albums ever by Pritam.

Jodhaa Akbar
Seeing a marginal push up into the charts with a one spot escalation, the music of
'Jodhaa Akbar' manages to sustain itself a week after the film's release. 'Azeem O Shaan Shehanshah' and 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' may have appealed
most visually but 'Jashn E Bahaara' has turned out to be most successful.
If the music doesn't pick up within next fortnight, it would only be difficult in days
to come with competition from 'U Me Aur Hum' and (expectedly) 'Jannat'

New
U Me Aur Hum
After 'Race', 'U Me Aur Hum' has turned out to be the only music in 2008 which has
really made a mark. The album is not just en route to be a good commercial success; even critically it is being appreciated. A very good soundtrack
by Vishal Bhardwaj, it has some more interesting tunes getting ready to be unveiled after 'Jee Le' and 'Dil Dhakda Hai'.
Ajay Devgan and Kajol in a hardcore romantic entertainer is not everyone's idea
which could have it's effect on perception created for the film's music

Om Shanti Om
Their music may have been the highest selling album of 2007 but ironically Vishal &
Shekhar have been deprived of major awards. However, audience continues to lap up the album and with the DVDs of the film out on stands, the
shelf life of 'Om Shanti Om' only gets longer.

Sunday
'Sunday' continues to do a flip-flop into the charts. After jumping by 3 spots, it
sees a fall again by 3 spots to find itself at #7. The title song is still attracting eyeballs though.
Even though the album is a success and music peppy, purists have taken it upon
them to dismiss it at every given opportunity

Welcome
A 'masala' soundtrack that worked quite a lot till the movie lasted at the theaters,
'Welcome' is what you call as hardcore commercial success. Not many reviews had much positive to say about the songs from the film but audiences
were all over it once the songs were seen along with the film.
'Jo bikta hai who achcha hai' â what else can one comment around 'Welcome', the
music of which has been a surprise success
9
9
Goal
'Goal' refuses to budge from the charts. Quite surprising though since even the
people behind the music of the film were perhaps not expecting the album to stay on for so long. It has been close to 100 days since the music
arrived and it is still selling well, though on the lower side.
Wish the theme song of the album would have created a name for itself too
amongst the audience!

Dus Kahaniyaan
'Dus Kahaniyaan' has finally reached number 'dus'! The album may not have been
the kind of success as 'Musafir' or 'Kaante' but has nevertheless kept Sanjay Gupta's reputation of coming up with a quality score for each film of
his.
'One Two Three', 'Karzzy 4' and 'Jannat' are coming one after another and that
should be quite some competition for 'Dus Kahaniyaan'
