Newton's third law of motion states that 'To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction'. But when it comes to this man, looking at his action, the onlookers fail to give reaction, since they become soooo very awestruck and dumbfounded! He is Bollywood's very own Akki alias Akshay Kumar alias Rajeev Bhatia.
His story of rags to riches (read 'kitchen to studios') is nothing new. But, what is new is the fact that Akshay has done some of the breath taking stunts in his most eagerly expected forthcoming film Singh Is Kinng, which is directed Anees Bazmee and produced by Vipul Shah.
The stunt that he performed for this film, which had everyone skip a heartbeat, required him to jump from one moving elevator to the other at a height of a whopping 110 feet! And the USP of this stunt was the fact that Akki did all of this, not only without using a duplicate, but also without any safety harness!
After a hard day's work, Akki does take time out to confess that he knows that one single mistake will cost one dearly. Hence, he is very, very careful when performing such stunts. After all, at the end of the day, after having played action cum romantic hero on screen, he will have to go home to his darling son Aarav and play multiple roles ranging from Sponge-Bob to Superman!
Way to go Mr Superdad! Source: Indiafm.com Features | 19 Feb 2008 | 2:24 pm
Ramu is a changed person. No longer willing to make films at the drop of a hit. No more the dial-a-quote wizard, this maverick moviemaker has mellowed, though not melted down. In a 'no-holds-barred' interview with Subhash K Jha, Ramu finally speaks up after months of silence
Where have you been hiding?
I was shooting my new film Contract in Mumbai and Bangkok, besides shooting the balance and post-production of Sarkar Raj, which releases in May.
People believed you had gone into hiding after Aag?
Why would I hide? I've made flops before. Yes, I agree Aag was a special flop. The reason I didn't speak is because there was nothing to say. I went into a phase of introspection. I now feel I was making films lately with a certain frivolous even callous attitude. I was also making press statements for effect, for shock value. I decided to keep quiet for a while. High time I stopped talking stupidly.
I was making press statements for effect, for shock value
Why do you think your utterances were stupid?
I want to make films that excite me which hopefully will excite the audience. Once you start getting addicted to media interviews you tend to forget you are a filmmaker, and not meant to entertain people through your interviews. I made Aag out of arrogance. I think I just wanted to be cocky by remaking a film I loved and respected. But when I decided to remake Shiva I wonder what I was thinking! Earlier it took me three minutes to decide to do a film. Today I'd think a million times before re-doing Shiva. Why would I want to do something so juvenile after having done Satya, Sarkar and Company?
Once you start getting addicted to media interviews you tend to forget you are a filmmaker.
Has Aag changed you?
Yes. But I don't blame anyone else for going wrong in Aag. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan trusted me completely in Aag. He trusted my vision and intention. But I feel my intention was wrong. Aag was a three-year old dream. Many changes happened. I was told by lawyers to change the story because my Sholay had to be different from the original. I lost my way along the way. Aag ended up as a caricature of Sholay.
Aag ended up as a caricature of Sholay
You admit that?
When people around you keep saying it's turning out well, you tend to get carried away. Aag was a special flop for me. Just as Sholay was benchmark. Aag was a landmark for me. It was not even a wake up call. It was a slap. If Aag wasn't attached to Sholay it'd have been just another flop. But because of the Sholay factor my blunder was magnified manifold. It was time for me to take time off to think deeply.
Aag was a special flop for me. Just as Sholay was benchmark. Aag was a landmark for me. It was not even a wake up call. It was a slap.
You sound different!
Eventually you are what you are. My intention and objectives are now different. People can say what they want. I know exactly why I worked with the cast that I did in Aag. When I came to Mumbai to make films I was like a kid in the candy store. I wanted it all. I guess I didn't have the infrastructure or enough time to do justice to all my projects. By the time, I realized where I was going wrong it was too late. I was stuck with these projects. I continued to make callous cocky statements. But somewhere I felt I was going wrong. I'd never again jump into a project because it sounded good on the idea level. I'll only do films with scripts and with full objectivity and make sure that it has the potential to get an audience. Nobody realizes mistakes until he gets a solid slap. Aag was that slap. Making a success isn't in my hands. But making sure that I make films with objectivity is something I can do, and I will.
Is that the spirit in which Contract is being made?
Yes. I made a conscious decision to make it with newcomers. There're 40 characters in this underworld film, all played by unknown faces. When I took Manoj Bajpai in Satya or Vivek Oberoi in Company I wasn't launching stars. I used them because they were right for the roles. But when the media and my associates started praising me it went to my head. I began seeing myself as a star-maker. I went into the trip of launching new actors. When I signed Mohit Ahlawat and Prashant Raj, I presumed they were stars before the film was made. I was being more and more sucked into a fantasy-land. Doing multiple films at such a fast pace in this state of mind was a potent and lethal blend. Hence, the sabbatical. Now I'm far more clear-headed.
When I took Manoj Bajpai in Satya or Vivek Oberoi in Company I wasn't launching stars. I used them because they were right for the roles.
While you were introspecting people thought your career had gone kaput... that you were doing a film with newcomers because established stars won't work with youâ¦
It's a free country. People are free to think and say what they like. I've always done what I wanted. After Satya, I did Rangeela. Then I did Daud, which had Sanjay Dutt. Whether then or now, I did what I wanted. What my detractors or well-wishers say is their business, they're welcome to their opinion. Even I'd think the same way.
Barring Mr. Bachchan, the cast in Aag took it down.
I disagree. It was up to me to do the right thing with the cast. In Sarkar, Mr. Bachchan trusted me as much as he trusted me in Aag. That his character worked in one and not in the other isn't his fault. According to me, his performance in Aag was far more complex and superior. I believed equally in Manoj, Randeep, Mohit and Prashant .Manoj's character worked. The others didn't.
Your financial position is supposed to be so bad you had to apparently sell your car?
How do I answer that without sounding stupid? For the last fifteen years, people have been worried about my finances-so sweet of them. Let me assure them I'm still moving around in the same car. I haven't sold it. People write anything they want. I'm making films the way I want to.
You've supposedly gone from riches to rags.
I was never rich in the first place. My finances are nobody's business. Other people's distress always makes us happy. If they're having fun at the expense of my finances let them.
I was never rich in the first place. My finances are nobody's business. Other people's distress always makes us happy.
You've certainly changed!
I've become more intense and objective. And very clear about what I want to do.
Do you feel isolated?
I was always a lonely person. Yes earlier there were more people around me. That's because I had many productions on the floors. Right now, I am doing only one film. Nothing will change in terms of the content. I'll still make highly experimental films.
Will you still give chances to every spotboy who wants to direct a film?
I didn't give chances. I took chances. But I won't sign anyone on a whim. And it would be the responsibility of those I sign to deliver the goods. No point in making films nobody is going to see. I've changed in my attitude. Today, I wonder if I'd make Daud after Satya! Today, I know why I am directing Contract. In 1997, when I made Satya there were 108 underworld shootouts in Mumbai. Today there are far less. The profile of the underworld has changed. And I want to explore that change. The new developments in the underworld have given birth to new characters. And I've used new faces because these faces reflect the new order.
Does this project take you back to your Satya days?
I still continue to make films only for myself. It's a myth you can make films for the audience. You don't know who the audience is. So my films are going to be far more experimental than before. Contract takes me into areas I haven't gone into before.
I still continue to make films only for myself. It's a myth you can make films for the audience.
Okay, lastly what is the one lesson that you learnt from the Aag fiasco?
That I need to get it right. Ramesh Sippy was right. I was foolish to attempt Sholay the way I did. At some point of time when I'm ready I want to do it again. This time I won't make the same mistakes. Source: Indiafm.com Features | 19 Feb 2008 | 2:11 pm

Nikhil Advani and Mukesh Talreja, Director of Orion Pictures Private Limited, announced a slate of six films to be produced by them in the next twelve months, on February 18, 2008. The company is all geared up on the production of these six films, two out of which are already under production.
While the prestigious Chandni Chowk to China presented by Warner Brothers and their big animation project Ab Dilli Door Nahi is already on the floors, Orion Pictures has now commissioned four more projects that are slated to go on floors in the next few months. The third film from the Orion bouquet of films to hit the floors in April / May 2008 would be Milap Zaveri's Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai! This film would mark Milap Zaveri's debut as a director after a number of successful films as a writer, such as Heyy Babyy, Masti, Jhankaar Beats, and Kaante. "There are lot of love stories between rich and poor, caste and creed but nothing that is out of the world. So, I came up with a twist to the popular concept of 'Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus'. I kept the man from Earth and the Woman from Venus," says Milap Zaveri on the venture. Riteish Deshmukh plays the guy from planet Earth while Ayesha Takia is the girl from Venus. Weaved around the concept of an alien searching for love from an Earthling, the story is written with a lot of good humor and emotions that the young generation of today can connect with. The film also stars a promising new comer, Ruslaan Mumtaz. "At Orion we are looking at working with a host of fresh talent including new directors. There is a huge untapped talent in the country. And we believe that a successful writer like Milap will prove to be a very talented film maker with a bright future," said Mukesh Talreja.
The other three films form an interesting package, which we intend to make public soon, and shall go on floors in the next few months. This would include a film to be directed by Nikhil Advani, Vikramiditya Motwane and Shivam Nair. The details of which will be announced at a later date. Nikhil Advani emphasizes, "Entertainment is what we intend to focus at Orion. We intend to make quality films with new talent as well as the existing talent. Our emphasis will be on making films of all genres, which will satiate the palette of all kinds of audiences." Source: Indiafm.com News | 19 Feb 2008 | 1:04 pm

After spending all his growing-up years with his family in Mira Road, Kunal Khemu has just moved to his own flat in suburban Andheri. "It's far more convenient because all the movie-related activities happen on this side of Mumbai. For now, I'm living alone for the first time," says the self-declared recluse who has come into a great deal of acclaim for his double role in Superstar.
"Though I had grown up watching actors perform double roles, I had never seen or experienced how it's done on celluloid. The camera with the robotic arms, playing two different characters concurrently in the same frame was fun and challenging." It's the long hair. Or perhaps that slightly scruffy but overly sensitive look that makes Kunal Khemu look like Johnny Depp. He loves the comparisons. "Yeah, I've people comparing me with Johnny Depp. It's flattering for someone who has just done four films as an adult. But I've been doing intense roles from the age of 15 when I played Mahesh Bhatt Saab in Zakhm. Now I want to have fun. That's why I did Priyadarshan's Dhol earlier this year. Comedy was a very new territory for me. I wanted to test the waters. Working with Priyan Sir was like going to school."
Now Kunal Khemu, a self-declared recluse and an obsessive actor, is all set to do more comedy. "My next two films Jai-Veeru directed by Puneet Sira (I Proud To Be An Indian) and Dhoondte Reh Jaoge (for UTV) directed by debutant Umesh Shukla have distinct comic elements. I like that kind of comedy. I think I'm too serious in real life." Incidentally, Jai-Veeru has nothing to do with Sholay. "Fardeen Khan and I play buddies who happen to be called that. We may change the title," says Kunal. At 24, in his new film, Superstar Kunal plays a double role as wannabe superstar and a privileged producer's son. "I quite identified with the character of the middleclass junior-artiste in Superstar, though I never had to struggle like him. Mahesh Bhatt Saab made sure of that. I did Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke with Bhatt Saab when I was only a child. Aamir and Bhatt saab were very protective. I was allowed to shoot as and when my schooling hours allowed." Aamir brings us to Taare Zameen Par and Darsheel Safary. "It's so wonderful to see Darsheel share such a high comfort level with Aamir. When I worked as a child with Aamir in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Raja Hindustani, we had no workshops, no rehearsals. Today's child actor has a lot more time to prepare. And it shows."
Kunal's abiding passion is acting. "I've done theatre in college and school. And my father Ravi Khemu is a product of the National School Of Drama. He has been my mentor and guideâ¦Among the actors Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt are my favorites. And I idolize Kamal Hassan." Personal life? "Nothing except cinema. Then if I get time, I go to a sports club to play cricket with my non-filmy friends. And before you ask, I'm not in a committed relationship. I guess I'm too shy to reach out to someone special. Acting gives me a chance to tap all those emotions and venture into all those areas of my mind and heart that I don't touch in real life." Source: Indiafm.com Features | 19 Feb 2008 | 10:59 am

In Indra Kumar's Raja, Madhuri Dixit had done a takeoff on Manorama. It was easy enough to mimic Manorama. With puffed cheeked, super-arched eyebrows and broad mannerisms she was a perfect candidate for caricature.
Beginning as a child artiste in 1926, Manorama acted since childhood and did nearly 150 films. She was known for her vampish image and outlandish personality. In recent times, she slowed down considerably and was very much out of the groove, emerging once in a while as she did Mahesh Bhatt's Junoon in 1992.
Mahesh Bhatt told a poignant story of Manorama's impoverished state. When Manorama was paid for her work she sighed and said, "Today I'll be able to take a bath." A casualty of Bollywood's heartlessness towards those who are seen as no more useful to the entertainment business, Manorama's last celluloid work was for Deepa Mehta's Water in which the actress played the leery raunchy and vulgar head- widow of the widows' ashram.
Deepa Mehta is shocked when informed of Manorama's death. "Is she really gone? I didn't even know. Nobody told me." Deepa chokes back the tears. "What an amazing woman! She was so thrilled when she was recognized at the Kerala Film Festival in Thiruvanthipuram last year for her contribution to Indian cinema. â¦She suffered a stroke about six months ago. My partner David Hamilton had gone to see her. I spoke to her last about four months ago. She was slurring a bit. But she said she felt much better. I took her word for it. And now, thisâ¦."
Interestingly, Manorama was the first and final choice to play Madhumati in Water. "We aborted Water in Varanasi. The entire cast changed. Only Manorama survived from the original cast. Five years later, she was on againâ¦I'm so shockedâ¦what a great trouper at that age! Such spirit. She shot at 40 degrees temperature in Sri Lanka, no joke for a woman her age. She was so lovely. And full masti for her. My daughter Devyani really bonded well with her. Devyani was totally fascinated by Manorama's history, her half-Irish parentage and her beginnings in Bollywood as Baby Iris, then being a heroine in Lahore and then a villainess in Mumbaiâ¦.it was fascinating! And Manorama was so well-spoken, erudite and very intelligent. Sometimes she's get bitter about how Bollywood shunned her in her later years. But most of the time, she'd say, 'God is great. Deepa, never forget that'
Deepa recalls a heartwarming incident with Manorama. "After Water got truncated in Varanasi, I had gone to Mumbai. Manorama told me, 'You'd be happy to know I've got money to buy myself a second-hand Maruti. And I've also got a driver. So, rather than run around in three-wheelers, I want you to have my car and driver whenever you're in Mumbai.' Can you believe this! During all this time no one in Mumbai has offered me a car and driver. She loved the chance of working in Water. That got her accolades.
International audiences were shaken by her performance. They felt she was very organic. Very real." Source: Indiafm.com Features | 19 Feb 2008 | 10:36 am

Vijay Galani's Veer directed by Gadar director, Anil Sharma, is a big budget extravaganza. The film has been in news because of its hero Salman Khan charging a never-heard-before packet of Rs 25 crore as his fee. Now, the Bollywood Hungama news break on the film is a strong possibility of Hollywood star Jean Claude Van Damme's daughter starring in the film in a crucial role. âYes she is here, but I wouldn't want to talk about it. She is a big man's daughter. Har cheez finalise nahin hui hai,â says director Anil Sharma.
Sharma isn't willing to disclose anything about the film except that âIt's a period film based in 1800.â He somewhat confirmed Salman's reported pay packet for the film and also said that Salman has been working hard on his physique. It seems he has to enhance his frame by one and a half times since he is playing a warrior in the film.
Van Damme sports a ferocious physique and is known world over for his international action packed films like Bloodsport, Lionheart, Universal Soldier, Double Impact etc. While searching on the net we found out he has two sons and only one daughter born in 1990 named Bianca from body builder Gladys Portugues. The moment Vashu Bhagnani finalized the script of his son's [Jacky] debut film, his director [Vivek Sharma, currently directing BHOOTNATH] was keen that the film be called KAL KISNE DEKHA. But Vashu was taken aback when he learnt that the title had been registered by Rakesh Roshan. The doting father that Vashu is, he promptly spoke to Roshan Sr., requesting him to give the title to him. But Roshan Sr. said that he too was planning to start his new film and was planning to utilise the title. If he didn't, he added, he would definitely gift the title to Vashu.
And that's what Roshan Sr. did!
A few days later, Vashu was celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary, which coincided with the launch of his son's acting debut. Vashu made a point to invite Roshan Sr. for the celebrations. Roshan Sr. was preoccupied with something and told Vashu that he wouldn't be able to make it. âBut I do have a gift for you,â Roshan Sr. remarked, âIt's the title -- KAL KISNE DEKHA. Please use it for your son's debut. It's all yours,â he said. Well, Vashu had yet another reason to celebrate that day! Source: Indiafm.com News | 19 Feb 2008 | 7:25 am
After months of maintaining a low profile, Rajkumar Hirani, the director of hits such as MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, has decided to set the record straight. âI was busy locking the script of my new film. Also, I didn't feel the need to issue clarifications or deny rumors that were appearing in the media wildly,â the soft-spoken Hirani breaks the silence.
Reportedly, he had changed 'camps' -- from being a Vidhu Vinod Chopra loyalist, he has moved on to SRK. Is he directing the film for SRK's Red Chillies? âThat's the weirdest rumor I read sometime back. I cannot think of doing anything like that to Vidhu. I've always said and will always maintain, he [Vidhu] gives me all the freedom to make films. So why should I move on?â he reasons.
The news-report also stated that SRK would be heading the cast of the film. âIt's Aamir Khan now. Yes, we were in talks with SRK at a point, but when the project didn't materialize, we approached Aamir for it. He finally signed on the dotted line a few days back, after we gave him a complete script narration. Right now, he's the only actor we have on board,â the talented director reveals.
What about Kajol? Reportedly, the makers had approached Kajol for the film, but it's Kareena now. True? âI haven't spoken to Kareena yet. Like I said, we've just finalized Aamir; the remaining cast will fall in place in the next few days. We hope to start filming in June, which means I need to have the cast in place in a few weeks from now,â he sets the record straight.
What's the film all about? âWe have tentatively titled it IDIOT. Without wanting to divulge much at this stage, I'd like to say that it's a feel-good film. It's a satire on the education system. It's a comedy with a social message,â he states.
Where does it leave MUNNABHAI 3? Also, is he directing a film for Sanjay Dutt's production house? âYes, Sanju did make an offer and I'd love to make a film for his production company. But he knows that I am starting IDIOT, after which we will start MUNNABHAI 3. Let's see,â he adds. Source: Indiafm.com News | 19 Feb 2008 | 7:18 am

âThe casting will follow once I am through with the script. I haven't completed writing yet. Even actors don't sign projects till they have a bound script on hand,â Siddharth tells me. Tusshar is extra-kicked about reprising his role as the mute and deaf in Golmaal Returns. This time it's his old pal Kareena with whom Tusshar gets to share screen space. "And we're playing siblings. That's right. Kareena plays my sister in Golmaal Returns! Isn't that cool?" Well, not quite cool because audiences will now expect Kareena to be Tusshar's onscreen Ekta.
Tusshar laughs off the insinuations. "Nothing of the sort. Have you forgotten that Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya played siblings in Josh? They were soon after accepted as an intense couple in Mohabbatein. And what about Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala? They played father-daughter and husband-wife in two films that were released during the same year (Khamoshi and Agni Sakshi). Earlier Sanjeevji and Jayaji were a married couple in Gulzar Saab's Koshish and father-daughter in Parichay during same year.
Considering these films came decades ago, surely today's generation would have no problem knowing Bebo and I are only acting as brother and sister. I'd love to do an intense love story with her immediately after this." Tusshar incidentally, feels very comforted by 'sister' Kareena's presence in Golmaal Returns.
"Earlier when we did Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai together, she was moody and into her own shell most of the time. Today she has mellowed down so much. And she's looking stunning these days," Tusshar ends appreciatively. Source: Indiafm.com News | 18 Feb 2008 | 3:56 pm
