Manorama of Seeta Aur Geeta died last Friday

One would remember yesteryears’ actress Manorama by her overstated eyelashes and expressions. She could easily be recollected by her prominent negative characters in films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Ek Phool Do Maali and Do Kaliyan. Unfortunately, she passed away in Mumbai on Friday (February 15). Manorama had done a couple of tele-soaps on Sony and Star Plus. She had started her acting career in Lahore decades ago and had moved to Mumbai during the 1947 partition along with her husband. Almost lost in the industry, Manorama last appeared in the Oscar nominated film Water as the head of a widow's ashram in Varanasi.

Jodhaa Akbar not being screened in Rajasthan

Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodhaa Akbar though going great guns all over India has failed to showcase itself in the land of Princess Jodha that is, Rajasthan. The film has been claimed to hurt the sentiments of few people by altering the historical facts in the movie that talks at length about Jodha Bai. The film scheduled for the release at 30 cinema halls in the state and nine in the capital city, Jaipur, could not make it because of an organization called Rajput Karni Group. In a four-hour telephonic conversation between the film’s director, producer, distributors, and representative of Karni Sena, Lokendra Kalvi, the latter kept on insisting a public apology from Ashutosh Gowarikar for supposedly distorting the important facts of the life of Rajput princess. He also stressed upon the removal of such falsehoods in the film. Rajput groups have accused Gowarikar of supposedly fiddling with the history of Jodha, the daughter of Udai Singh of Marwar, who apparently, was the wife of Akbar’s son Salim and not Akbar. The group claims to withdraw their agitation only if a selected group of historians give clean chit to the film after a special screening to be held by Gowarikar. In the meanwhile, Siddharth Roy Kapoor of UTV motion pictures while denying the accusations informed that a lot of research has been done before the making of the film. In addition, another group called Yuva Kshatriya Mahasabha is known to have stopped the screening of film in two cinema halls at Gwalior.

Why is Saif Ali Khan so confused?

Whatever Saif Ali Khan does, he does it in style. Whether it is strumming the guitar or flaunting his lady love's name through a tattoo or even sipping a cup of tea for that matter, the Chotte Nawab does bring his own charisma in whatever he does. Saif is seen here at a function to launch Brooke Bond Taj Mahal's' Taj Tea Trail campaign' earlier this week, but we are kinda wondering what is he doing drinking his tea blindfolded. We couldn't really figure out if that was cool or not? So, rather than we giving you our opinion, why don't you guys let us know your comments on what you think Saif Ali Khan is trying to do. Just quote a really funny, wacky caption for the picture and post your comments in the section below.

"I am launching my clothesline with Globus" - Kareena

Download image as wallpaper Riding high on the runaway Box-Office success of Jab We Met, nothing but the best seems to be 'lining' up for Kareena Kapoor. After sweeping awards and accolades this season, this gorgeous gal is also rumoured to have turned B-town's highest paid actress today. With a kitty full of sassy endorsements and innumerous big banner films in her pipeline, Kareena is all set to be the new 'Queen B' of tinselville. And if you think her list of achievements end here, then, better think again! Always been regarded a popular style icon, Kareena is now bracing up to launch her own line of clothes. An excited Kareena says, "Yes, I will be launching my exclusive line of clothes soon and I'm quite sure people will like it. My clothing line is very reflective of my personal sense of style and will have my label on it. Just like I'm pretty casual about my dressing, my line will also consist of an extremely wearable yet stylish collection. I am taking out this line in association with Globus, a brand that I am also the ambassadress for". So how does this line set itself apart from other designer wear available at prêt and couture stores in the country? "The most special feature in this line is my level of involvement with the designs and fabric samples used. It's not just my label that's being carried. I have personally sat down and shortlisted each and every fabric with the team of designers at Globus. In fact, a team of experts quizzed me to death on not just my sense of dressing, but also my favourite colours, my personality traits and so on," reveals Kareena. A source close to the actress, who has been involved since the conception of this line says, "This will truly be a first for an Indian actress. Up till now, only international divas such as Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham have launched their own line of clothes. In India, Celina Jaitley launched her collection, but that was only restricted to sarees. What Kareena has designed is truly fabulous and covers an entire range of clothing - high fashion party dresses to causal daily wear, the kind of stuff she wears. A lot of research has gone into understanding Bebo's style and matching her sense of style to her line of clothes. A team of experts had rigorous sessions with Bebo. They asked her questions on her personality, the kind of things that make her happy, her likes, dislikes and of course, the colours she likes to sport. And now that the line is going to be ready soon, we can proudly say the clothes are just like Bebo - cool, chilled out and spunky. Youngsters have always loved her sense of style, so we are very hopeful this spring summer collection will become a big hit with them" says the source.

Trio caught for shopping on SRK's credit card

Shah Rukh Khan found himself in all the news headlines yesterday (Feb 15) when his missing credit card was used by three people at a shopping mall in the suburbs of Mumbai. The story which seems straight out of a Bollywood potboiler goes something like this. On February 10, the trio of Vinay Vijay Tambe (22), James Paul Peremal(28) and Shekar Jadhav(44) went to Shopper’s Stop at Nirmal Lifestyle Mall in Mulund (W). After splurging around Rs. 25,000 on expensive clothes, watches etc, they coolly removed an ICICI credit card to pay the amount. However, the card belonged to none other than Shah Rukh Khan who had incidentally lost his card and passport a few days back while shooting near Santacruz. The alert sales executive at the counter immediately smelled trouble when he saw the actor’s name on the pay-slip. In fact, Vinay Tambe (one of the trio) didn’t even try to forge the actor’s signature but signed in his own name which made it all the more easier for the store people to realize that something was surely fishy. Soon after verifying with ICICI bank officials, the police were called and trio were taken into custody. On questioning the trio seemed innocent that it was SRK’s card which they had and casually said that they just found it lying on a road near Santacruz. They have been remanded in police custody till February 18 .The Mulund police in the meanwhile, are waiting to record King Khan’s statement regarding his credit card.

Akshay Kumar to film action scenes on The Great Wall Of China with Kill Bill's Villain Gordon Lieu

Nikhil Advani left for Shanghai on Monday, Jan 28, to shoot for the action opus Chandni Chowk To China. "We've story-boarded the entire film. The action-comedy is now coming to life. And the big news is that this would be the first film to be shot on Beijing's Great Wall Of China. Roger Yuan from Shanghai Knights will be one of Akshay's adversaries. But the main villain is being played by Gordon Lieu of Kill Bill Part 2." "Akshay Kumar will be performing huge action scenes on the Great Wall Of China. In terms of action we want to take Bollywood to another level with this one," informs Nikhil. A romantic song featuring Akshay and Deepika Padukone may also be filmed in around the Wall. "But the space for love in the plot is between the action and the comedy. The romance here has a different flavor. We finish the film in four weeks at a stretch,” warns Nikhil before taking off to China. Deepika has many difficult stunts to perform. While Akshay has been training for his action scenes, Deepika who has been shooting with Ranbir Kapoor in Australia returned on Sunday to join the unit in China. "In October and November she trained for her share of the martial arts. She needs to brush up her martial arts training. All her songs are ready and choreographed. So now that she's back she just has to start rehearsing," informs Nikhil. Said Nikhil excitedly, "This would be my fourth visit to China in four months. Our entire unit is going, and that includes cooks." Akshay Kumar plays a cook in this action film.

Subhash K Jha speaks about Jodhaa-Akbar

There's Akbar, in full regalia, watching a traditional 'sufi qawalli' when he suddenly goes into a spiritual trance and joins the qawwalls for a dance to divinity. This historic moment that takes us beyond the distending dynasties of Mughal history, couldn't have been possible without Hrithik Roshan's amazing capacity to infiltrate the portals of divinity through dance movements. Very often as we, wonder-eyed and open-mouthed, traverse the sanguinary and simply stunning spectacle of Ashutosh Gowarikar's historical epic, we end up looking at King Akbar as interpreted by Hrithik Roshan rather than as what the Mughal myth might have been. The body language of the sinewy sword-wielding poet-warrior takes us back to Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai rather than Prithviraj Kapoor who played King Akbar in K Asif's undying classic Mughal-e-Azam with such imposing imperiousness. Is Gowarikar's Mughal-e-awesome fated to be as tall and magniloquent as Asif's deserved costume drama? In terms of the creative and visual terrain covered in the course of the 3 hour-20-minute journey from history to hysteria from mellow to melodrama, and back, Gowarikar's vision subsumes a reined-in wealth of ideas and images suppressed into an opulent but aesthetic orgy of love, romance, war, hatred and secularism and sublimity. The noble righteousness of the creative mind (so evident in Gowarikar's earlier films Lagaan and Swades) here jumps out of the screen to seize the audience by the solar plexus and transport us into an era when brother battled brother in bitter rage. But love, Kambakht Ishq, blossomed in the inner chambers of a secular Muslim emperor who married a fiercely individualistic Rajput queen and allowed space to be her own person. Wisely, the narrative patterns Akbar's chequered life love and wars through the various characters who influence his mind and heart. To begin with, we see the young Akbar being molded into a violent creature of revenge and acquisition by his senapati-mentor Bairam Khan (Uri). But sorry, Akbar with his melting eyes and a heart to match won't behead his enemies unless they push him beyond the brink. In a frightening burst of vengeful brutality we see Akbar ordering his soldiers to thrown down a stubborn adversary's headfirst to death. A smashing mise en scene, no doubt. But all said and dumped, Ashutosh Gowarikar's Akbar is a man who'd rather live in peace than wallow in war. Alas, Akbar lived in violent battle-friendly times. His repudiation of a culture of confrontationism is benchmarked by the characters who shape his life…There's the very complex relationship that Akbar shares with his foster-mother (Ila Arun, brilliantly choleric). This troubled relationship and the friction between the foster-mother and Akbar's new bride could be straight out of Indra Kumar's Beta… More filmy stuff? You got it! Doesn't the ambivalent equation between the foster-mother and Akbar's real mother(Poonam Sinha, eternally lost as though worried about what the cook must be preparing back home for the kids' dinner) remind you of Durga Khote and Sonia Sahni in Raj Kapoor's Bobby? Ashutosh Gowarikar purposely and sure-handedly brings in kitschy elements from great commercial cinema to provide a kind of warm and ready-to-wear accessibility to his historic tale. The filming of the durbar-song 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah' is the last word in spectacle. Breathtaking is the word that comes to mind often in this breathless but never breadth-less tale of vibrant valor and vitality. Never before have we seen battle sequences so spectacular and energetic in Hindi cinema. Take the opening sequence where the battle lines close ranks in such passionate movements that we the audience feel trampled at the center. Kiran Deohans' swift-but-sublime cinematography is of international caliber, on a par with anything that we've seen in Gladiator or Braveheart. A.R Rahman's music is a bit of a letdown, though. Veering between authenticity and listener-friendliness it's a bit of a mellow mish-mash signifying none of those enchanting echoes of Jodha and Akbar's royal hearts resonating with ever-lasting romanticism. The love story occupies the pride of place in Jodhaa-Akbar. The sudden marital alliance between the benign king and the free-spirited Rajput queen, their post-marriage courtship, the monstrous misunderstanding that cuts through their growing fondness, and the final and irreversible reconciliation, are portrayed with exquisite and penetrating fluidity. Not once does the director allow the inherent opulence of his theme to overpower the love that grows like a tender blossom in a parched desert. Hrithik Roshan's pleading poetic eyes in a warrior's face define the historic romance as much as Aishwarya Rai's swan-like grace and passionate individualism. After Dhoom 2, this pair whips up a Mughalai feast of passion and romance without skipping a single beat. There're thundering interludes of romance between the central characters all done in a captivating blend of poetry and drama echoing the past in a sprinkle of ever-renewable emotions. But none of this is ever done in a self-congratulatory over-flamboyant style. Jodhaa-Akbar takes us back to a time when love meant never having to say your are Salim. Watch this Mughal-e-awesome as a splendidly spiced-up slice of history. Or just savor the chemistry between the warrior and the princess, with hundreds of junior artistes, elephants, rabbits and parrots accompanying the couple's journey from secularism to eternity.

"Jodhaa Akbar has been tough" - Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan is in the mood to do more work this year, to loosen up, and to have more fun while working. With his first costume drama and a second child around the corner, life never looked rosier for Hrithik. He speaks to Subhash K Jha After Jodhaa Akbar, you shot an ad. Was it a deliberate effort to lighten the load? Fortunately, for me I enjoyed both equally. In fact, I've enjoyed everything I've done so far. Jodhaa Akbar has been tough. Luckily, people are looking forward to it. Some for the grandeur and ambience and others, so that they get an opportunity to throw some tomatoes on the screen. I'm happy that everyone is motivated to come for the film. You were quoted as saying you'd never do a historical again. Not true. I might've said that in a specific context. But I'd definitely not do another one for a long time. It's such a momentous opportunity. Doing it again would make it less sublime. When you think of period you think of a grandeur that's hard to replicate. I don't think I'd want to get into that space for a long time. Has Jodhaa Akbar been especially taxing? None of my films has been easy. Krissh and Dhoom 2 have been as physically and emotionally taxing as Jodhaa Akbar. I've enjoyed it so much. And I wouldn't do a historical for the same reasons that I wouldn't do a Dhoom for a long time. Dhoom and Jodhaa Akbar covered two genres exhaustively. Now it's time to move on. But playing Akbar would be radically different from playing Buddha? Apparently Shyam Benegal offered you Buddha? I'm sure Buddha would be a great subject and wonderful characters to explore. But again, playing Siddharth is about amours and horses. And I've been there, done that. The ambience, the country and the language would require a similar discipline for me. I wouldn't mind doing a period-fantasy like Pirates of the Caribbean. It's always fun to bounce off into the other extreme. Dhoom helped me to get excited and challenged about Jodhaa Akbar. It was a challenge for both Ash and me. Now I want to do something entirely contemporary. That brings me to the question of how open the audience is to watching Aishwarya and you do a costume drama after the fiercely contemporary Dhoom 2. It's always a challenge for any actor to make the audiences forget not just the outside world, but everything that they've seen before on screen, to suck you completely into the magic of the moment and to make the audience exhilarated. You are asking me if Jodhaa Akbar does that or not. Only the audience can answer that. For me the film is already a success. The Box-Office is only going to be a bonus, hopefully. For me the film is already a success. The Box-Office is only going to be a bonus, hopefully This is your first collaboration with Ashutosh Gowariker… Yes. My primary motivation for doing Jodhaa Akbar was to mingle with a mind that'd be as alert and innovative as Ashutosh's. I knew he'd help me explore a different facet of my acting. He helped me go to places in my psyche I had never gone to before. It's been great fun. Ashutosh is a damn good combination of intelligent preparation and spontaneity. He comes fully prepared. But has the guts to throw it out of the window, if he so wishes. He has the power to turn the scenes around in your head. Sometimes he'd whisper a thought in my ear. And my entire being would be reverberating with that emotion, and with the desire to express it in front of the camera. Then you look back on the shot and you whistle in admiration and pride. Different films offer me different tunings with the director. Jodhaa Akbar has benefited me immensely as an actor. You're doing a lot of ads. Do they provide the same creative substance as feature films? I give the same level of commitment to whatever I do. Otherwise, I can't do it. It's not a matter in which I've a choice. Giving my best is the only option I have. I'd say working in ads and feature films are different, and, also yet the same. Ads give you a chance to explore areas that perhaps feature films do not. The dimensions are smaller. It's quickly in and out. One is able to experiment without having to shoulder the responsibility. An ad doesn't really affect your career. So it's more fun. As an actor it's my responsibility to put myself in spaces I'm not comfortable with all the time. Giving my best is the only option I have Is it a challenge to say the whole story on just 90 seconds? That's the director's challenge. Sometimes it's restrictive for the actor. I don't think an actor should be asked to accommodate his discipline to the duration of the film. So, ads do cramp you. They don't allow the thorough process to flow that freely. It becomes a little artificial at times. And that's something I try to avoid at any cost. Would you like to be a slip-in-slip-out actor? I'd want that. I think acting is about developing your skills to such an extent that you can command it at your will. That confidence when you have the experience and the body of work. Hopefully, some day, I'll be slipping in slipping out and forgetting my roles once I'm done. I don't look forward to that day…. I do. Believe me, I do. That's why I enjoy doing ads. Like I said the responsibility lessens. I shoulder less responsibility and have more fun in ads. Having to dance in all your ad…is that an irritant? It might become annoying for viewers. I mean you may enjoy eating mangoes. But you can't keep eating them all the time. I think it's better to get cautious about the dancing before it gets excessively in-your-face. Now some of the ad-makers agree with me on this. I think it's better to get cautious about the dancing before it gets excessively in-your-face You like to work only with like-minded people? Yeah. There's no point being okay with mediocrity. And you can only be heading towards mediocrity if the effort isn't collaborative enough. Do you feel you've so far achieved what you set out to? One of life's greatest lessons is that you never reach the summit. I've seen my dad achieve more success than anyone else. Mine pales in comparison. I still see him tensed, fearful, anxious, unsure and ready to fight every time he starts a new film. I don't want to reach that summit where I say, 'Ah, I've arrived' Right now, that place doesn't even exist in my head.

"In terms of scale, I had never seen sets and the backdrop before like in Jodhaa ...

Shockingly, the temperature in Mumbai had recently fallen to an all-time low of 8 degree Celsius. But the atmosphere inside Mehboob studios was hot. Why? Because Aishwarya Rai was present in the studio doing interviews for the promotion of Jodhaa Akbar. My appointment was scheduled at 5 pm, however, I got to meet her at 10 pm. But five hours was worth a wait to meet the former Miss World turned actress-now-turned Mrs. Bachchan. You've been a part of three big costume dramas - Devdas, Umrao Jaan and now Jodhaa Akbar. Can't it get any bigger than this? (Laughs) You know, the person I really pose this question to, is Nitin Chandrakant Desai. Though he didn't work on Umrao Jaan, but when he worked on Devdas, the sets were so huge and incredible, that I never thought it could get any bigger than that. In terms of scale, here we were working on a movie of this grandeur and magnitude, Jodhaa Akbar, and never before, had I seen sets and the backdrop like in this film. It transported us into another era. In terms of scale, here we were working on a movie of this grandeur and magnitude I had never seen sets and the backdrop like in this film You said in your earlier interviews, that the way in which films are made in the West, are completely diverse to the way they are made here. But that's films. What about your audiences? Are they any different? To be specific, I had said that in terms of the start date and the end date. That's the way the overseas films are scheduled and I'm not complaining. In the West, the way of working is very methodic. Over here, it's an emotional experience and a family gathering. Everyone is very accommodative. As far as the audiences are concerned, the one very over-whelming aspect about the Indian and overseas fans is that their love for Hindi cinema is incomparable. It can't be defined and it's there to be experienced. Is it physically challenging to be doing stunts like fencing, riding on elephants, etc. when you are a part of such a big epic? There was a lot to do, but it was Akbar (Hrithik) who had to go through the challenges. The princess, (that's me), had to do very little sword fighting and an even lesser horse riding, but, overall, I had a good time in whatever I did. Does that mean you are adventurous? Yes, I love to do action. My first taste of it was in the making of The Last Legion. I remember when I read the script of Jodhaa Akbar; there were mentions of some fight sequences. But in the final scripting, the scenes were cut on the editing table. But I have no complaints though I would've loved to do a bit more action. I would've loved to do a bit more action You 'provoked' the U.K audiences with your career's best performance in Provoked. You melt your audiences' heart every time they visit Madame Tussauds. What are you going to do next? (Laughs) My fans have been so supportive that they've allowed me to realize my dream when I started out in cinema. The industry has been very generous and by the grace of God, I've been spoilt for choice in terms of the kind of the offers coming my way. I don't know whether I've been wise or not in my choices, but I just did a film because I wanted to do or I felt like or both. Provoked was a very vital story to be told and I'm glad that my fans and critics have appreciated the film and my performance. The same goes with Madame Tussauds. It's my audiences love and support that has got me in there. You wished Jodhaa had Abhishek or Akbar? (Laughs) I've got Abhishek, so Jodhaa can definitely have Akbar. The case with Rahman's music is that it grows on you and it stays with you for a very long time. A.R.Rahman in Guru and now in Jodhaa Akbar. Two different eras, one music maestro. Are you disappointed somehow when you hear that Jodhaa Akbar's music isn't living up to it's expectations, or do you think that it will pick up after the film's release? The case with Rahman's music is that it grows on you and it stays with you for a very long time. That's him. The special factor about a movie like Jodhaa Akbar and a filmmaker like Ashutosh Gowariker is that he is not compromising in terms of trying to make music that would just be a trend or something that would necessarily be dubbed as popular. He had absolute clarity in the fact that he was here making music for an epic romance and not a historical film. As you rightly pointed out, when you watch the movie, you will relate to his choices as to why he chose those tunes and lyrics for the music of this film. Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan went to the Oscars. Where would you wish Jodhaa Akbar to lead? To the hearts of my audiences. Period costume dramas haven't really worked at the Box Office, as far as the figures are concerned. Are you at all afraid of failure? Movies like Jodhaa Akbar don't get made every day and I'm thankful that a director like Ashutosh, who is also the producer of the film, had the conviction to follow his dream and make the movie rather than succumb to these doubts, fears and apprehensions. The beauty of cinema is that it's there forever to be embraced at whichever point in time, by the audiences. Nobody has a place in this industry who is afraid. Everyone just enjoys cinema and respects it too. I'm thankful that a director like Ashutosh, who is also the producer of the film, had the conviction to follow his dream and make the movie This is your first UTV film ever since you've become an actress. How does that feel and were you aware of it? Wow! That's something I didn't know. Oh my God! Ronnie Screwvala and me have interacted so many times that I've never made a note of this fact. I'm glad that it has finally happened. There were so many ideas we have discussed and kudos to Ronnie for supporting the movies, he has been a part of, for all these years. He has backed and has been a part of the current big movement that we are seeing and experiencing in Hindi cinema and to be a part of his production is simply an honour. Ronnie has backed and has been a part of the current big movement that we are seeing and experiencing in Hindi cinema What was your experience like working with Hrithik? Working with Hrithik was wonderful but I wouldn't use the word 'was' because during the music launch he was saying, "We shouldn't be meeting up after couple of years and saying - 'That is the way it was.' So yes… I'd like both of us to share screen space again. He is also very focused, committed and very healthy in terms of his food habits. I'm also glad that we both have worked back to back in two different types of films - Dhoom 2 and now Jodhaa Akbar. What was so different in the costumes you've put on in Umrao Jaan and now in Jodhaa Akbar? Or do you think that you've started off from where you left? I'm glad you've at least asked this and cared to observe the costumes. Yes, both the films you've mentioned are set in another period. The backdrops are very different. From being a courtesan to a Rajput Princess, the journey was very diverse in terms of the look, the make-up, the hair and the costumes. In Jodhaa Akbar, I've really darkened my hair and have got light brown hair. I've also put on dark lenses. My costumes in Jodhaa Akbar are heavy, bright and colourful as compared to Umrao Jaan. Any message for your fans? Believe you me, Love conquers all.
