Saif's new cooler campaign

Saif has been the brand ambassador for Provogue for a few years now. The campaigns so far have been pretty-much straightforward using the star's personality and presence to project the Provogue shirts as cool trendy and young. But now the campaign is about to hot up. The new Provogue ads will feature Saif in an enormously rugged ambience. Says Saif, "Ya, it's a cooler campaign with stylish cars in the picture and lots of metal in the frames. We're going for a rougher slicker approach than before." Saif has always maintained he does ads to supplement his income. But now he seems to be taking care to make sure that the products he projects acquire a durable shelf life.

DVD Review: Welcome

Rajiv (Akshay Kumar) and his unmusical uncle Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) are on the lookout for a 'behen, beti or bai' suitable enough for marriage and they happen to ring the doorbell of don Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) and Majnu Bhai (Anil Kapoor) who are desperately seeking a groom for their sister Sanjana (Katrina Kaif, uff those sexy legs). Of course, the dons 'Welcome' them with unkempt cowboy grins and off goes the rambunctious title track of Anees Bazmee's blockbuster, Welcome. This sequence and the Sajid-Wajid chartbuster that follows is one of the special features of the DVD of this laugh riot that has been released in the Home Video segment by Studio 18 only in the overseas market. The domestic release will be done later by BIG. A couple of other special features of this DVD happen to be Added Promos Subtitles in Arabic and English. Considering that the film has been largely shot in Dubai, that's a masterstroke for the Bolly-struck crowd in Gulf will have a friendly reason to watch this film while having a reference point that comes naturally to them. Now what immediately strikes you is that maybe the DVD of such a special film as this could have been packaged in an even more exciting way. Apart from the title track (which you also happen to see at the end credits of the film), there could have been deleted scenes, making of the film and a few bloopers (Katrina's fluctuating dubbed voice is a blooper in itself anyway). Technical Details 16.9 Anamorphic Widescreen 5.1 Dolby Digital Duration: 152 minutes Reasons why you must buy Welcome DVD The film is one of the biggest hits of Hindi cinema. It doesn't pretend to give you a social message or deviate from its basic aim of time-pass entertainment. If you've watched the film in theatres then you'd surely wish to watch it again in the comfort of your plasma-ensconced living room too. If you happen to live in some remote corner of the globe where Hindi films aren't released, then you must be really hungry for this one. Want to know why? Well… Anil Kapoor with his superb comic timing fills each frame with an unmatched zestful energy. This is surely his most entertaining performance since Taal. When you watch Nana Patekar swirling to the hip-shaking sensuality of Mallika Sherawat or watching him go in the 'Control Uday' mode, you are bound to crack up. Katrina Kaif in her most glamorous avatar since Boom shows off curvaceous moves and slithering bare long legs which is enough to perfume your eyes with her strawberry flavour. This may not be Akshay Kumar's best performance of 2007, but this superstar completes the show with his song-n-dance, perfect comic timing and heroics. Mallika, expectedly heats up the proceedings whenever she is on screen. Also notable is her gradual drift towards good performance as an actress. Paresh Rawal sleep walks through a role that only he can do. When the music of the film was released, several upstart, so-called-critics (who claim to be having the pulse of the music buying public) slammed the ensemble music directors of Welcome for a poor show. But the fact of the matter is that the soundtrack of this film is still topping all the charts. Be it the foot tapping Welcome, Punjabi-enthused Uncha Lamba, song with the middle-east touch Tera Sarafa or the howlarious Insha Allah, you just can't escape their popularity. Anand Raj Anand is in big demand now both as a composer as well as the singer (he has sung Uncha Lamba and Tera Sarafa besides composing them). The slickly choreographed songs are another reason to check out this DVD at your-own-convenience. What we like “Welcome is a fun ride all the way”: indiafm.com. The slick DVD cover has the IndiaFM (Now Bollywood Hungama) stamp on it. We had given thumbs Up to the film on the Friday it was released and the people endorsed our opinion vociferously. Final Verdict The Welcome DVD is a must buy. For, you just can't afford to lose out on having the most hilarious movie out of your reach for too long. The more times you watch it, the more you enjoy it. Rating: *** 1/2

Bakhtiyaar Irani joins Karzzzz cast

Bhushan Kumar's Karzzzz has been in the news right from the time it was announced. Just recently, there was a puja organized where the cast (Himesh Reshammiya, debutante Shweta Kumar, Urmila Matondkar, Danny, Gulshan Grover etc.) was announced to the media. The film which is a remake of Subhash Ghai's blockbuster hit, Karz, is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Most of the characters from the original version have been retained even in the new version. The latest actor to join the Karzzzz bandwagon is T.V. star Bakhtiyaar Irani who has been signed to play the role of Dr.Dayal, a role played by veteran actor Jalal Agha in the original version. To refresh your memory, Dr. Dayal was the one who played the doctor-cum-friend to Monty (Rishi Kapoor's) character. So, as you must have guessed it, Bakthyaar would be playing the doctor who looks at the ailment of Himesh Reshammiya in this modern day version. Apparently, director Satish Kaushik zeroed in on Bakhtiyaar after watching him in Love Ka Tadka Well, with Himesh himself composing the music for this film and shooting all set to commence this month, one can't wait to watch this remake.

"They're very aspirational clothes. And priced likewise. We targeted it for people between the age of 16 and 24. But the core buyer for my clothes has stretched from 16 to 40." And now John is all set to take his clothes lineup abroad. "In 2008 we're taking my clothes to international countries in the US and UK. The exclusivity factor remains foremost. Even if someone goes to buy, ‘John Abraham’ apparel in the biggest departmental store in New York, he or she will have a problem getting it. It shouldn't be easy to get to me. I never want any aspect of my life to be taken for granted. And that goes for my career as well," says the actor who has only two films on hand in 2008. "Sriram Raghavan's film produced by Rohan Sippy and Karan Johar's film directed by Tarun Mansukhani. Coincidentally, I work with Aishwarya in the first and Abhishek in the second. And both are untitled films so far. Maybe we can call them the John Abraham specials," he jokes. John also goes seriously international in 2008 with Deepa Mehta's Luna. "Is already have the name for it. John Abraham is far less difficult to pronounce for the foreigners than Bipasha Basu," jokes John.

"I have always been a part of all of SRK's films, but unfortunately, I could not make it ...

Call him fortunate enough or simply 'street-smart'; this filmmaker has made his way with two of today's top notch stars in Bhootnath, which also happens to be his directorial debut. After 12-years of long struggle, Vivek Sharma turns director with this film starring the legendary Amitabh Bachchan along with Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Priyanshu Chatterjee. The film will hit the screens on May 9. Bollywood Hungama brings you the exclusive interview of the multi-talented Vivek Sharma. The title Bhootnath sounds like a comic-horror. What is it all about? Bhootnath is a cute and an emotional story of love between a ghost and a child, largely targeted towards children. A package of an unusual storyline and screenplay, along with Amitabh Bachchan playing the role of the ghost, will make it a visual treat for the moviegoers. The story revolves around the family, which resides in a haunted house. The conflict and situation between the family members and their reaction to the ghost's pranks are interesting to watch. A package of an unusual storyline and screenplay along with Amitabh Bachchan playing the role of the ghost will make it a visual treat for the moviegoers. How did you come across this idea? The concept was actually initiated by a friend of mine to which I added finer details and created the script of Bhootnath. What difficulties did you face as a director, since it is your debut film? A director is recognized by the choice of subjects that he selects to work on, when it comes to filmmaking. Well, I believe one has to have a clear picture of his work and things will eventually fall in place. Moreover, my career as a creative head and associate director has helped me a lot. Moreover, I have come a long way since the time I started my career with Bhatt Sir. Fortunately, I got to learn about the varied departments in filmmaking, starting from production to audition. A director is recognized by his choice of subjects that he selects to work on, when it comes to filmmaking. Please throw some light on Shah Rukh and Juhi's role in the film Shah Rukh plays a Chief Engineer on a cruise liner; he is fun loving person and whereas Juhi is a complete surprise package. She portrays the role of a lazy mother who cannot function without a maidservant and has a son who is a major prankster. It's a cute little family who deal with the ghost, residing at their place. You are among the very few fortunate directors who got the opportunity to work with Big B and SRK. How does it feel? (Laughs) Well, surprisingly, the idea of having the two biggies in my debut film for the first time never occurred to me until a journalist pointed it in one of the interviews. Honestly, I was elated to work with the two superstars. I feel completely content and even if I die tomorrow, I will have no regrets. And by God's grace things have been moving smoothly since the first day of the shoot. The chemistry between SRK and Amitabh has been perfect. And actors like Juhi, Rajpal Yadav and Priyanshu have added stars to my film. Of course, with Ravi Chopra's hand on my head, I could not have asked for a better debut. The chemistry between SRK and Amitabh has been perfect. And actors like Juhi, Rajpal, Priyanshu have added stars to my film. For 12 years you have had a splendid relationship with Shah Rukh, are you planning to work under his banner in the near future? These12 years have been fantastic. Both Shah Rukh and Juhi have been my local guardians here in Mumbai. I have always been a part of all his films, it is a record, but unfortunately, I could not make it for Om Shanti Om because I had already commenced with Bhootnath. Well, being a part of Shah Rukh's crew, everyone assumed that my career establishment would be a cake walk. But, trust me; I have seen my share of struggle period. I have faced rejection at the hand of producers who have discarded my scripts without a second glance. However, I did not loose faith and worked harder towards it, because I feel cinema is a creative field and it's all about convincing each other. I have never used Shah Rukh's name as a reference. Ravi Sir signed me on my face value; he did not even know that I belonged to Shah Rukh's group. He heard my narration and immediately gave a nod to go ahead with the subject. It was much later that he came to know about my collaboration with SRK. And about my film with Shah Rukh; I am ready with the script on a hard-hitting subject and if things work out, then we will surely work together again. It is a restrictive and raw subject; something he has never experimented with. How was the experience of working with both the Shahenshah and Baadshah of Bollywood and of course Juhi Chawla been? Oh fantastic!! Both Amitji and Shah Rukh are highly professional who know the value of the time and what a new director goes through in his first venture. Amitji's enthusiasm and dedication towards the project was amazing. He is man of conviction who never treated me like a new director. My happiness knew no bounds when I shot his first scene, on the other hand, Juhi and Shah Rukh are like family to me, I have worked with them so many times that it feels like home. Working with the legend himself in short, it was an experience worth remembering. Moreover, I'd like to add that there were no tiffs between Shah Rukh and Amitabh it was simply a media gimmick. In fact, Shah Rukh has been so amiable; he would actually gift Amitji DVD games, and at times, I have seen them play it together as well. There were no tiffs between Shah Rukh and Amitabh; it was simply a media gimmick. How have BR Films been as producers? Superb! BR Films are one of the finest production houses I have come across. They are visionaries and anticipate things fantastically, be it in making or selling the films. They are very down to earth. And as long as Raviji wants me to make films under BR banner, I will. They have made some cult-progressive films against market trends. I believe no one can dare to make a film like Baghban and Baabul. BR films have carved a niche for themselves since it's inception with films like Pati, Patni Aur Woh, Tawayaf and Nikaah, they have always conveyed a message highlighting social evils. B.R films are visionaries and anticipate things fantastically be it in making or selling the films. Since the film centers the life of a ghost, does it have any special effects? We have about 40 minute's special effects. There are a couple of scenes wherein the ghost crosses the wall and an iron gate. There's also a scene where three people are sitting together and one of them is the ghost and the other two were unknowingly talking to it. And, thus we have created little illusions of the characters. We have our own special effects company called Pix Entrix. Any special favorite shot in the entire film. The best shot is when Big B realizes that he is a ghost. An emotional scene which definitely is a high point in the film. Another is the confrontation between SRK and Priyanshu who plays Amitji's son in the film. It's a very well-written scene with some fantastic dialogues and some wonderful performances by the duo. SRK has performed the scene with a different intensity and so has Priyanshu. What do you think about the music of the film? And your favorite track? Vishal-Shekhar have given the music a very modern rhythm. Big B will be seen performing two major songs and has sung two songs titled 'Buddy Suno Zara' and the other is 'Roothna Manaa' where he is convincing the kid to patch up. Another one of the finest written songs by Javed Akhtar is an emotional one at the climax of the film picturizing all the characters. And, 'Samay Ka Pahiya' is my favorite one. Dil Ka Hal Sune Dilwala is a very modern, contemporary, and unusual concept. Tell us about your other projects starting with Vashu Bhagnani? Vashuji's son Jackie will be launched in the film, Kal Kisne Dekha. The film is already in the process of pre-production. I hope by the end of month we will have actors on the dotted line. Both Jackie and the actress who is to star opposite him have performance-oriented roles, so we are on a look-out for a really talented actress who may or may not be a newcomer. It is a very unusual romantic thriller. The film will have the blockbuster jodi, Sajid-Wajid, making the music for the film and will have its release on Oct 28. It's heard that you are planning to introduce Kamal Hassan's daughter Shruti Hassan in one of your next ventures? Kamal Hassan's daughter was recommended opposite Jackie in Kal Kisne Dekha. We had a word with her business manager. Unfortunately, due to date problems Shruti would be unable to do the film. Sajid -Wajid, who I believe are today's Laxmikant Pyarelal. What is the status of the other film with B.R Films? It's a story of discovering one's own dreams. It is an emotional journey of a rich guy who discovers his core self, his values, the system, culture, and value for money and life. However, we again are in the process of signing actors. The film, Dil Ka Hal Sune Dilwala, is a very modern, contemporary, and unusual concept. We will commence the shooting of the film after the completion of Vashuji's Kal Kisne Dekha. Here again, we are hoping to rope in Sajid-Wajid to compose the music. Very soon one will get to see the teaser of Bhootnath. You are doing another film with Ashtavinayak. Who all have been signed for that? The film titled Dil Can Fly Idhar Udhar with Ashtavinayak will hopefully have Govindaji in the lead role. It's a romantic comedy with an interesting plot where the characters are confused about love and hence find it difficult to have a stable relationship. And when that confusion backfires, they happen to realize the value of love. Again, Sajid -Wajid, who I believe are today's Laxmikant Pyarelal, will compose the music for the film. Actually, they have come up with a superb melody in Vashu Bhagnani's film and that's the reason I consider them for all my films. The film will go on the floors by Jan-Feb 2009. Coming back to Bhootnath, how have you thought of promoting the film? Very soon one will get to see the teaser of Bhootnath. We have decided upon a very interesting marketing strategy which I don't want to disclose now. It will be one of the finely publicized films to be released on May 9, 2008. What are your expectations with the film? Well, my intention was to make a good descent film to maintain the successful journey of B.R films. An unusual story with the presence of Big B and SRK will hopefully make it a hit.

The Most Awaited movies of 2008

With all eyes on Bollywood, and a whole slew of movies due for release, Bollywood Hungama took up the challenge to chart what are likely to be the biggest blockbusters of 2008. The analysis took the form of an extensive survey (from 23rd to 31st January) conducted online amongst those who really matter - the consumers. Spanning regions as diverse as India and South-East Asia to the European Union and USA-Canada, the user had to select his/her 5 most anticipated movies. A 9-day survey, conducted between 23rd January to 31st January, the poll saw 5,10,548 valid responses. Sunil Shetty announces his next film 'V'

Its reunion time for old friends Sunil Shetty and Sanjay Khanna. It's been almost after 7 years that they will be coming together, the last time being in the film Ittefaq. Director Sanjay, who had been missing from the Bollywood scene, because he was busy, doing ad films, has been offered a film for Popcorn Entertainment by Sunil Shetty! Khanna said that they (Sunil and he) are indeed working on a film called V, which is about five friends. It will be an action film with the underworld as a backdrop. While Sanjay Kumar and Iqbal Raj have written the script, the rest of the casting is still in progress. Sunil, meanwhile went on record to say how talented is his friend and that he has been made the creative director of Popcorn Entertainment, which will have him handle all the post production work from cutting promos to planning out the music videos. Meanwhile, the businessman in Sunil simply refuses to take rest, as he is now planning to make a film studio, (a la Nitin Desai?) on the Panvel highway. "I'm not trying to be one-up on Karan" - Nikhil Advani

Blame Ayesha Takiya's father for prompting Nikhil Advani into making an animation film. "He actually tempted me into making an animation film. But my fear was we don't have the budget of a Finding Nemo? I started work on my animation film before starting From Chandni Chowk to China for Rohan Sippy." There is an avalanche of animation films coming up this year with star-voices lending a glorious market-friendliness to the projects. If Yashraj Films Roadside Romeo has Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Javed Jaffrey's voices, Karan Johar's Coochie Coochie Hota Hai will have Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani reprising their Kuch Kuch Hota Hai dialogues in animation form. Nikhil Advani has Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takiya and Boman Irani to do voices in his animation film tentatively titled Ab Dilli Door Nahin. What made Nikhil decide to do an animation film suddenly? Was he trying to be one-up on his erstwhile producer-friend Karan Johar who's also producing an animation film? Nikhil laughs. "No such thing. It's just a funny coincidence that whatever Karan does, I end up doing. It was Ayesha Takiya's father's idea to do the animation film. I was neck-deep into pre-production for my big film From Chandni Chowk To China. This was the last distraction I needed. But now that I've done it I must say I had a ball." Before we knew it Nikhil has gone and completed an animation film about five animals from the jungle seeking an audience with politicians in Delhi. The film's title is Ab Dilli Door Nahin. Just one hitch. The title belongs to R.K. Films. In 1957, the illustrious Raj Kapoor produced an experimental film called Ab Dilli Door Nahin about a young boy from a far-off village journeying to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The film came and bombed. But Nikhil feels it's the correct title for his film. "My animation film is about the adventures of five animals-with voices by Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takiya, Urmila Matondkar, Boman Irani, and Sunil Shetty plays a very special role as Ayesha's father-heading for Delhi to meet the politicians there. I can't think of a better title than Ab Dilli Door Nahin. Because it's about 'nothing is impossible'. But the title is with R.K. Films. I've requested them to part with it. They haven't gotten back to me. But I'm sure they will. I hope I will be able to use the title. Because I've no second option." Nikhil hopes to dedicate Ab Dilli Door Nahin to his adopted baby girl. "I hope she'll be old enough to enjoy the film when it's released next year. At the end of the day, I want it to be released like a full Bollywood film. There're six songs by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy." The director is trying to spend as much time as possible with his baby girl before he leaves for China early next week for four months at a stretch. "But I've made sure they join me there."
